3rd down punt is far too underused. I guess it goes down to fan appraisal but a punt on third and long near your own goal line makes more sense than running it and risking the fumble.

This was a very impressive punt considering it was done by a quarterback and all, but when you tell people that he kicked a 91 yard punt it's a little misleading. It didn't sail through the air 91 yards (that's impossible), it went about 55 yards in the air and then rolled the rest of the way. It's just that people who aren't football fans need to be aware that even 'rolling" yards are always included in the total. Peace.

This proves you don't need a dedicated punter on a team...just find out which of your position players and boot the damn ball. Although Randall Cunningham is a BAMF, almost lead the Vikes to an undefeated season in '98...

Oh, and how 'bout Sammy Baugh? He was an All-Pro QB, punter, and defensive back at the same time for multiple seasons. He's still the #2 punter of all time behind only Ray Guy, and he is widely considered one of the greatest players in the history of football.

@Searchsays This isn't true at all. Cunningham was an All-Conference punter at UNLV and punted many times throughout his NFL career, averaging over 44 yards per kick. This particular punt was on fourth down and totaled 91 yards.
@nimnestl I watched this game on local TV as I watched every Eagles game possible. It was a third down punt, ergo a quick kick. Yes there was a deep safety, who was there in case of a long pass. He was not aware of a punt as It rolled right past him.

@Searchsays This isn't true at all. Cunningham was an All-Conference punter at UNLV and punted many times throughout his NFL career, averaging over 44 yards per kick. This particular punt was on fourth down and totaled 91 yards.

@nimnestl I watched this game on local TV as I watched every Eagles game possible. It was a third down punt, ergo a quick kick. Yes there was a deep safety, who was there in case of a long pass. He was not aware of a punt as It rolled right past him.

Tell ya what, you can watch the 3rd down sack, the 4th down punt, and the Simms fumble right here on YouTube under the heading "Golic sacks Simms - 12/03/1989". The video quality is fantastic, as is the Madden/Summerall commentary. Yes, Cunningham did pull off a "quick kick" or two in his career, but brother, this was not one of 'em! E-A-G-L-E-S...EAGLES!!!

What i understand is that a punt, he figured, was going to come - so many yards for a first down..and too much windyness to throw smart, so then a risk of a safety very high with a run. so he punts, on third. the OTHER team figured we MUST be intel. and put a safety out there, after all a quarterback could still get lucky. but they DID NOT expect a third down punt from the qb..smart.
