Actually the wire is to connect between the receiver and the flash...instead of using the hot shoe. This is useful if you are triggering studio flashes instead of speed lights. A lot of photographers will use them with the right cabling to trigger speed lights also. They will mount their speed light straight to the umbrella stand. Then either plug the receiver in an let it hang or mount it onto the flash with say velco. The output on transmitter is to trigger corded flashes also in conjunction
