Walter...well done my friend...this was always a favorite! Sometimes we forget real genius isn't always the divine providence of being in front of the camera!
What relates so brilliantly in this song is just that we're all sick of money ruling our lives, and Richard's perspective was from success, and how money corrupted people around him, and possibly, his chosen career. Whichever way, it's a sentiment that anyone can relate to.
Props to Rundgren for the great drum sound here, and the acoustic guitar mixed with the electric is perfection. Bass is sweet as well. Vocals, of course, beyond analysis.
@TheRealCritique yes and they where fantastic...love my way they came out with..that is the song that was on the radio as i was on my way to the hospital for the birth of my daughter..then at the hospital i had a tuna sandwich and soda.watched her pop out and love her allways my way
There is something in this song that's a bit of a sendoff, even when I first heard it.
It has resignation in the lyrics.
When it came out, I was excited to be excited about a Furs song again. Within a year or two, grunge hit, and punk rock and the total underground of the 80s that followed it in the US were officially over.
The lyrics on this are pretty crushing. It's weird that Richard gives us so many dark statements, and we love him for it. All about the honesty, I suppose.
@walterpitt3, I am extremely jealous :D This is my favourite band ever! I loved the period "love spit love". Greetings from France and thanks for the great videoclip :)
Well done, Mr. Pitt. This song and the video you directed marked the return of the intense Psychedelic Furs, wherein they slapped back at the popular music industry and recorded what they wanted. The vid is shot beautifully, and shows them without pretense. The capper to all the nice shots is the final one of R. Butler, offering that slight smile full of irony and intelligence. Always dug that. From here, they hit back even harder with "Entertain Me" and "Should God Forget' - brilliant.
@scottiek65 Richard is great to work with. He is very interested in his environment and the world as it is around him. I think he is a great poet. He talked to me a bit about how he worked and the whole band John Tim and Vinny
were so cool with us. No pretending, they were just themselves. Great guys, every one.
I love this video. Are you on Facebook? I have a couple of questions and actually wanted to say thanks....which I just did....life's a bitch, ain't she?
@idavidsawyer Oops I mean about 3:31 or 3:32 is where that cool sounding instrument comes in (but then again it might have been throughout the song it's just its not as audible until the end.
Always powerful and gripping. I think mainstream music back in the 80s and 90s weren't ready for the Furs because they were so deep and emotional. People would rather listen to stereotypically rock sounding music that is rough yet non threatening. This not only rocked but it stirred the soul, and that makes people nervous... even though toughies out there that listen to hard stuff most of them couldn't handle The Furs.
This brings back so many memories! I met the band (whom I'd just seen live weeks earlier) the night before they recorded this video, in Woodstock NY. Amazing song, amazing times.
you directed this?! fantastic, maybe yt won't yank this one :)
~ honestly one of the best Furs songs/music vidz i've ever seen. the rain imagery is hypnotic, as is richard's raspy drone, which always reminded me of Johnny Rotten w/talent.
This is my favorite music of theirs!!! Here in Brasil just one rock radio played this song in that time. I had the lucky of have listend this!!! Very good song!!!!!

Great work, Walter! Furs were, and I presume, still are an excellent band. Todd Rundgren's studio, huh? Makes sense that he would record near Woodstock back in the '80s rather than at his roots in suburban Philly, which had already fallen into decay, Although it would rather fall in line with this great songs lyrics as Richard sweeps away litter- strewn trash heaps from his feet. Anyway... great song, great directing, kudos all around. Furs most underrated band of their day.
Nice work Walter! This has always been my favorite song of theirs. Much better than the "hits' although Love my way is still classic. Lyrics for this are excellent!
