I was wondering about the whole relaxing every 6 weeks because the girl that does my hair told me to do that, but i was just thinking that it didn't even SOUND healthy for your hair....Thanks for the tips!
Girl, I was doing the same thing. My hair is really being to grow and is healthier. I've haven't had a relaxer since May. I've decided to go natural (for a year). I love Mix Chicks conditioners. It does wonders for my hair. My new growth loves it and is much easier to comb through for styling. I still blow dry and flat iron. I have a lot of products for both. But, now I don't do too much flat ironing. O.k. moving on to part two.
My hair is coarse so what and how can and why should I avoid using a touch up on my regrowth? What products should I look for that got protein and no harsh stuff in it? I relaxe my hair ever few months but not as much as they say you should be.
@sholloway410 Yes it is good the stretch in between relaxers. I would suggest you go and find a YouTuber that relaxes their hair, and ask about products. I am natural so my products may not be best for relaxed hair. Just type in YouTube search box products for relaxed hair or how to stretch your relaxer. Good Luck Honey!
@sholloway410 How can: wear curly styles. Wear wigs. Wear protective styles why should: that's your hair. Ur tripping your hair to perm it (while i respect the choice) only asks for damage. Learn how to take care of your natural/real hair and you'll by default learn how to take care of permed hair and when you can accept your hair texture you wont rush to a perm every time you see your curls come in. Ps Course hair... probably dry/thick/curly hair that is crying for help.
My hair is coarse so what and how can and why should I avoid using a touch up on my regrowth? What products should I look for that got protein and no harsh stuff in it?
Thank you for sharing your story so gracefully. I too took my thick long hair for granted by not giving it the TLC it cried out for every day. I got tired of Stylists telling me for over c.5 years that my hair was fine (when it was dry and clearly breaking all over the place). I'm now 8 weeks post & have become a healthy hair care preaching PJ! Can't wait to see your progress vids - but I first had to say "Thank you. God bless & wish you every success with your healthy haircare journey ;-)
Don't feel ashamed...I made all of those mistakes minus deep conditioning and the heat protectant...I even treated the weave better because I guess in my head I was like "I paid too much for this hair to mess it up...or....It's not mine so of course I have to make it look nice"...lol...Great video!I'm transitioning to natural and this helped.God bless!
Good I'm glad you finallly came around..now I can let you know about henna it's all natural only for those who are open minded.
oils, such as rosemary, olive oil, jojoba oil, I put henna on my hair u can make your hair any color with it and good for your hair. I heard about black caster oil I havn't tried it has anyone else do you like it..? .I stay away from all types of sulphites, amonias ?'s stretching ? u mentioned stretching or did i mis hear that part?
Thank you for sharing this, I have notice how the texture of my hair has improved just by using better products. Non-sulfate shampoo, non-cone conditioners & leave-ins, coconut oil, shea butter. Plus my own moisture spritz, aloe jucie, rosewater, & oil. I bought deep conditioner with protien conditioner I use at least 2x month. It sucks that the best stuff for OUR hair, is NOT in the beauty supply store.
i think how often you get a relaxer depends on your type of hair and the type of relaxer, because i have extremely coarse and thick hair and i get a relaxer every 5-6 weeks and around the 3rd week post-relaxer,my scalp is already full of new-growth and my edges are already rough.I have yet to find a relaxer with enough longevity to last at least until the 5th week.
Good for you, that means your hair is growing quickly! Lucky! ^__^ The rate at which your new growth comes in has little to do with the relaxer. If your relaxer lasted until the 5th week, you wouldn't need to relax yet. It also doesn't mean you have to use a relaxer more often. Try finding a gentler way to to lay down your curls, or try a curly style after the 3rd week to disguise the line of demarcation. Just trying to help a sister out. ♥♥♥
@ Sharterrka03 and your making the #1 mistake stop wearing weave and wigs look at yourself your a beautiful black woman dont taint yourself with the white mans invention of wigs and weaves its not mad for us black folk.
Im pretty sure shes using the wig as a transtioning style...in the dry winter natural and transtioning hair gets really dry so a ot of natural sister will use wigs to look in mostuer. i do yearn braids its great for keeping your jhair from drying out untill the cold weather gets warm :)
Hi, I understand where you're coming from and although I personally wouldn't want to depend on false hair, I don't entirely agree with your comment. Many African tribes, long before meeting Europeans, used to wear wigs and wove fake hair into theirs. They did this to achieve certain styles. Asians did this too. Of course, the finished product looked kinky and Afro-textured! That's the main difference I see. You're right, most modern incarnations look nothing like natural African hair. ♥
i really enjoyed your video's but the term "relaxer's are bad" is a huge pet peeve of mine. Yes, its a harsh chemical, but it depends on how its being applied (and frequency that its being applied) that makes it "bad". I've learned how to stretch my relaxers and maintain relaxed hair with no problem. So Relaxers are not bad, when people abuse them then they are. I hope im making sense
No matter how much care or prep work you do before you apply the relaxer it still causes damage to your hair. Relaxers are a compound of harsh chemicals that are meant to break down the natural curl at each kink. Since it is breaking down our natural curls at each point in the curl it weakens the strand and thus causes damage. You can have healthy relaxed hair but it's different from natural hair. A chemical is a chemical no matter how you slice it. But again you can have healthy relaxed hair...
@TalkNerdyToMe28 I agree! I just don't understand why when people go natural all of a sudden relaxers are Satan's Spawn...LOL! I mean they forget that they had a relaxer for a reason. It's all in the care of the hair relaxer or natural. I've seen some bad natural heads so what's the deal....
I have very kinky hair! Straighteners dont do me too good and whether I like it or not I have to blow-dry my hair. and so would you recommend a relaxer?
I'm sorry but I can't recommend a relaxer to anyone...because of the damage they do to hair. I have a few tips and ideas, so send me a PM (personal message) with a bit more detail about your hair type. So I can answer the question correctly.
the mistakes ive been making w/ relaxed hair is using the wrong products and i feel so stupid for thinking all the products were the same. i also straighted my hair everyday with a flat iron (deff not a good idea) i didn't even know what deep conditioning was or protective hair styles! i just didnt know, no one told me!!
i still choose to relax (want 2 go natural but dont want 2 loose my legnth) but i take better care of my hair and now its doing something i never thought it would do... grow and stop breaking off.
First I just want to say congrats on figuring out what products work better in your hair, and proper hair care techniques to create a healthier head of hair. Second I wanted to let you know that you can go natural without getting the big chop. There are a lot of transitioners who are choosing to go natural without the big chop. I say go for it and see if you can go natural-make sure you do your research. But do it for yourself! Good luck!!!
Thank you for your vid. I have made all of the same mistakes as you have. I am now transitioning to natural hair and I am LOVING IT!!! My hair started thinning, and breaking and shedding excessively... but NOW, it's getting healthier and shedding minimally. Thank you for sharing.
You're Welcome! Yes I have seen so much less breakage and shedding. My hair is getting healthier and I know now that I have had good hair all along. I just needed to take better care of it! I'm really glad you liked the video!
I agree with you about the relaxers, when I was relaxed i use to get my relaxer to often! Now I am natural and I love it my hair thank me for it everyday:) This was such a great video, great tips I love it!!! Keep the videos coming! Merry Christmas!
Thanks. My "too often relaxer" mistake is so embarrassing, but I knew that I wasn't the only one out there that did it. What's worst is that there are women who are still doing it, so I hope I can help and reach out to them. But I'm happy that you were able to relate to my video!
