She's very fearless, or at least was, but I suspect she still is.
Anyone seen Godard's Sauve qui peut (la vie)? It's from 1980, fairly early into Huppert's career. She plays a jaded prostitute who has a series of unsavory encounters. I expect many young actresses would've been clearly uncomfortable in that role, given what was often going on in a scene or what she'd sometimes have to do, but Huppert came across as appropriately secure and unmoved.
Ive only seen her in the Piano Teacher, and was hypnotized by her performance. The scene in which the camera focuses on just her face as she stares at her student Walter is amazingly minimal, internalised desire that somehow she conveys through her poker face.
@whatsthehurrymurray - yeah, I was wondering if that was done ironically. This week they mentioned taking glasses off for dramatic effect, in relation to stroking of moustaches.
@simozonelayer I'd forgotten that bit! I think Kermode must absorb some moves from all the films he sees - thankfully he hasn't deployed the 'Richard Gere Buns' yet!!
did he refer to Meryl Streep as Muriel Strep? lol
A very nice talk of Huppert though. She's a bloody Goddess.

"Because it's proper acting, that's why!"
That sounds pithy and repeatable enough for me.

Isabelle Huppert is a cinematic superhero. She always looks hardened and assured.

Kermode adores a monotone actor.

He's right about Heaven's Gate. Utterly shallow and long winded film...
shame it's the only film I've ever seen her in.
