  • PORTNOY is the MASTER.can play anything !

  • Without Fates Warning, Dream Theater would be a Rush cover band!

  • such a great song

  • It is interesting to think what Mark would do if he filled in for Mike at a DT show. What would he do with all those drums???

  • @bigsexy9999 Tear it up.

  • Mike did quite a good job with drums considering that he didn t have a lot of time to prepare for the gig. He talks about it on his new DVD, In Constant Motion, he had like only one day to jam with the guys before doing the actual gig.

  • I would love to hear Zonders rendition of Metroplolis with DT :)

  • true that

  • in fact portnoy and zonder are progressive drummers but as well portnoy focuses on the aggressive odd timing and whatever in dream theater as zonder focuses on phrasing literally and he is much better than portnoy in playing with the feeling and technicality (which zonder uses both of them most of the time) which most of us drummers only focus on technicalities...

  • It's unusual to see MIke actually concentrating on what he's doing.

  • agreed

  • Mike's playing is very fast! Ray even asked him to slow down a bit...Mark Zonder is irreplaceable! He have a better respect regarding phrasing and dynamics...end of discussion!!!

  • Yep! see 3:13 where Ray showed that Mike has got a small Wiener :-P just a joke ;)

  • imsoprO....check out "Mark Zonder at Musicians Institute drum clinic." You'll be impressed by his technique and phrasing. He has some wicked chops. I'm a big Portnoy fan also, but Zonder deff. has better technique. Portnoy has an incredible imagination, and that's where he makes a huge impression on most people, I believe.

  • I was at the Mark Zonder Clinic he is a genius while being a GIT student I was able to attend any clinic and it was awesome he is a genius! Although I say with all due to respect to both they both have a lot fo creativity and and a lot of ideas and both are different yet very top notch drummers! But I agree Mark Zonder was the perfect drummer for Fates Warning although this performance is kick ass!

  • This number sounds a lot different with different people playing on it from all directoins I think anyways

  • ehhh, as much as i love Portnoy, hes not as technical as Zonder

  • Portnoy is by far better, but Mark was never given real space to open up. I love FW but they have a lot of slow/ballard type music or at the least half time music. I have not had a chance to hear his stuff with his other bands, so I will go looking soon to see what I can find.

  • I am a huge Portnoy fan but he can't touch Zonder.

  • I second that. Portnoy is a god, but Zonder created the gods. Anybody that disagress either hasn't listened closely enough to Zonder's work, or just can't get over their mancrush they have on Portnoy.

  • ive never heard of zonder...

i highly doubt that hes better than mike.

whats some good songs to check out?

  • @imsopr0 A Pleasant Shade of Gray, One, this one, monument, face the fear, etc

  • anyone who disagrees just has a different opinion. you cant say anyone is better than the next because your just going to get into arguments. look i have listened to zonder and hes very talented i agree but i just find portnoy better. it has nothing to do with not listening or having a "mancrush" i just like his work better. theres no best or better in music. i mean you can say that travis barker is better than buddy rich, it sounds retarded, but if someone says that you just gotta leave em be

  • good point dude. If anyone said that Barker were better than Rich tho, in my presence, well I'd just have to punch them in the head a few times... just for good measure and all.

  • thanks man, and yea I probably would be more willing to hit someone who would dare say that.

  • true mate.

  • @saunders2112 I disagree

  • great band, it seems that has the presence of eminent guitarist of the band Sun Caged watching the show behind the boxes

  • Ray is one of the best... saw them in 1995 and he was flawless.

  • Ah stop moaning. Ray still sounds great singing it lower. Its called aging.

  • Marlboro REDS thats what happened.

  • True. I saw them on Perfect Symmetry, and he couldn't always hit the high notes even then.

  • when i saw fates warning they were fucking awsome,Ray is one of the best singers i have ever heard live !

  • great!

  • This song kick ass!

  • Great song! Not much more to say

  • What the fuck?! What on earth has happened to Ray Alder's singing voice? I thought that he has changed his style, because it suits the music better. This video from '05 already proves that he cannot do the higher scale anymore. I'm sure that he suffered some kind of vocal damage at some point of his career.

I heard that he has this so called LPR. It's like laryngeal acid reflux. Shit. Ray alder still rocks anyway!

  • Have any of you watched any of the live Fates stuff? Ray is all studio, and has never really been able to pull it off live, sad to say. But then, Arch couldn't either, so...

  • did you listen to "still life"?

it's a live record, recorded in 1998 and alder sang all the high parts. not very perfect, but come on give him a break, the stuff from the old records hat some really nasty high notes that barely any singer i know could take so easily. i think ray did well and it sounded great, which is most important

what's happening now is that he lost his voice a little. nevertheless FW remains the greatest band ever

  • Thats pure True!

  • Alder is a talented singer. He managed to do something so great with his new band 'Redemption!, His voice sticks to the melodies and he brings a energic strenght to their songs. His passion has changed of adress i do think.

  • I'm pretty sure that Alder's voice vocal chords are, kind of, consumed with the years. He cannot deafinitly reach the tonalities as high as he was able to do in the past. In live songs of F.W", he intentionally avoiding to sing high in the more intenses vocals parts (it's probably better this way!) Howerver, he sings simlars lower notes that fit to the song. I think that for a new lister, this song would be less irratating than to a real long-time fan.

  • Sounds like Ray Adler's voice is on vacation. This song highlights how great his singing voice is, and he definitely failed here.

  • Sadly, I agree. His voice sounds trashed here.

  • Portnoy looks stiff

  • Portnoy Makes me stiff... *Cough* I see what you mean though. I think its because its just a one off gig with people he doesn't play with that often.

  • Ugh, Portnoy completely murders the amazing work of Zonder in the studio version...

  • Well it's not zonder so it's not going to be the exact same, give the guy a break man.

  • HAHAHA! So true, so true

  • I don't know if it's my imagination, but Ray Alder sounds like he had bit his tongue hehehe (especially on FWX)... don't get me wrong Fates Warning is a great band.

  • great.great.
