Rick you should get some 10 meter target rifles on here, do the boys at pyramid air ever let those our to test? I know they sell at least 10 or so on their site. If nothing else I would love to see what that 300 plus daisy can do, they claim it is pretty accurate?
I'll be getting to those come Summer when it is too hot to go outside and shoot here in Arizona. I definitely want to get some trigger time with those 10m guns.
yep.. they are much better shots then me. I'm looking to find out how good the GUN is.. not necessarily how good I am. I want every advantage to take "me" out of the equation. Spring guns are tough because you can't "vice" them for testing. You have to hold them. The other issue with the scope is that the parallax is set way beyond the manufacture's suggested range. So I'm testing the gun "out of the box" to get the average user insight on what they may experience.
They use lightweight lead pellets to get "up to" 950 fps. The "up to" is the important part. It does not mean that every gun will do it, just that under the right circumstances it could shoot "up to" 950 fps.
@AirGunWeb You mentioned that nitro pistons last longer than spring. So how many shots could you expect the average spring piston in a pellet gun last?
If you are going to get near the $200 mark, then look at the RWS 34. I was given that same advice early on but decided to ignore it and go with other guns posting fast velocities and big promises. Boy do I wish I had just listened and got the RWS 34. I would have saved a ton of cash. Anyway, the Summit over the big cat.. RWS 34 if you can swing it.
@AirGunWeb I didnt like the flaws on this gun. to me accurracy is everything, and this gun just looked like a flop when it came down to it. if you could reccomend a .22 caliber breakbarrel under 200 dollars....not a good breakbarrel...THE BEST breakbarrel that you have used in .22 cal. this is a big question to throw at you, especially with all the guns you have tested, and i know that i can spend a couple grand on an fx, but it would be great if you could throw me a reply. thanks a bunch :)
For the $200 price point.. the RWS 34 is my favorite gun. The Benjamin Trial NP .22 (not the xl) can be a very good gun if you get a good one ($230). I've had mostly good ones that I've shot, but did have 1 dud out of the box. The Beeman R9 (more money) is a very good gun, the RWS 350 Magnum, and of course the Air Arm line of guns are exceptional.
@Outdoorsmen2244 I have Venon in .177 cal and it shoots very well. The trigger is long but smooth. It's new so I only shot it with Gammo Match pellets but accuracy is great and it holds zero very .well
Hoepfully we will be seeign a Benjamin 392 review coming up in the near future. I just got it for Christmas, and from my experience, I know now why it is a legend.
look for the first Take AIM episode. I doubt that you have a scope issue.. more than likely it is the rifle having accuracy issues. I had a terrible time getting any sort of success with my test gun.
My nitro venom in .22 cal is super easy to cock. a baby could do it with eaase. when u cock it, it basically is as hard to cock as any other airgun that has already been cocked! lol.
any help? what should i do? i purchased from pyramid air. thanks
I can't cock my rifle, its REALLY hard, not even my dad can, he thinks there may be something jamming the mechanism inside it, what do you think it is or should I do??
more than likely you've got a sharp edge in the linkage where it goes in the channel and pushes the piston. call Crosman and get a new gun. I've seen this more and more recently. There is a QC issue that they need to address.
If the seal was chewed up, it would account for the lower velocities you got.....however
as you said the standard deviation and extreme spread would be greatly affected.
i just keep shooting mine,......able to put 5 inside a water bottle cap...@ 10m .
It just doesn't instill confidence. BTW my PCP's are the 2 M-rods and 2 custom 2260 /2250 conversions to HPA by Roy @ Mountain Air....and a Katana...(which has proven to outshoot my greg davis tuned 22 M-rod.)
Anything's possible. I took this apart and found the seal was totally mangled.. There are some real issues with quality control and oversight right now. Crosman needs to tighten the belt with their overseas suppliers and stop accepting guns in this condition. Right now it is hit or miss if you get a good one or not. Crosman will certainly send you a new one if you're not happy with the one you get.
I was sent a Venom Dusk by Crosman to replace a Titan GP that had the same problems you saw with this rifle. NO pellet would get repeatable results. Tried with 3 different scopes and about 15 types of pellets. Same thing. They weren't fliers. The group would MOVE in-mass over 20 shots or so. Adjust again, and it would drift off again in another direction. This was with a GRT III replacement trigger.
I hope it becomes an accurate plinker, which is what I wanted the Titan GP for.
It may be that you've got a dud. I took mine apart after the video and the main seal looked like it was chewed up. I've got a new seal on the way. I'll be working on this gun through my Take AIM series. I'll document how and what I do to get it shooting right, if it can.
Been looking at a new Nitro Piston that won't break the bank. This is not it. I don't want to buy a project no matter how cheap it is. I hunt squirrels and accuracy is a big deal for me. Also power is not even close to the claims in their adds.Thanks Rick for all you do!
i think crosman make very good guns for the money, cutting corners in the cosmetics and other little things in the process to keep costs down.. it would be great if they could offer a nicer version of the trails or venoms with a nicer trigger and nicer wood. i think the guns themselves al have potential however, and they are great project guns.
I'll be keeping this Venom to work on as a project gun. I'll be posting "how to" videos. I know that this gun can be made to shoot very well. It will be a fun journey.
I guess it depends on what you are looking for. I was looking for more accuracy with a lot less effort. I want to see .25" groups or better at 10 yards and .5" or better at 20.. This was shooting 1" and 2" groups at 20 yards. A lot has to do with the trigger pull and the scope. I've tested the gun with a leapers scope and a different trigger.. the groups shrank dramatically.
what do you plan to do to improve its accuracy? recrowning the barrel perhaps? please let us know how it goes... im having a bit of accuracy issues with my .22 venom as well, although my groups are slightly better than whats shown on video. Thanks!
I've rebuilt the gun and reworked the trigger.. did not replace the trigger yet.. also replaced the scope.. I'm getting .25" at 10 yards and .5" at 20.. not consistently yet.. but getting there.
I put the grt trigger in there and bam! I was nailing quarters at 35 yds away. And I adjusted the objective lens to be focused at about 25. Thing shoots like a beauty now
I know the gun can shoot well with a little work.. new trigger, better scope.. as I've been stating however.. should you have to do that? Consider a .22 firearm for the same money. Would you expect to have to do the same work to see decent results at 10 or 20 yards, or would you expect more from it? I say we should expect more from Crosman.
I bought mine at Wally World and returned twice until I was satisfied. The stock isn't as nice as yours, but it gets roughly .400 ctc @ 30 yards in .177.
Here's my question.. Should you have to work on a "new" gun to make is shoot right? If you bought a new car that didn't steer correctly.. would you run down to advance and buy an upgraded steering box or would you require the manufacture to fix it. We (Airgunners) have let Crosman get lazy and frankly get away with putting out 2nd rate products. When we fix there issues, bang goes our warranty. A side benefit for Crosman.
yep. I use a slotted 1/2 inch 4/40 screw from lowes. a little plumbers tape to help firm up the plastic threads and you are good to go. BUT you are in effect moving the strut to the bleeding edge of the sear. I've seen people do this and have misfires as well as have the barrel fly back up after cocking (which ruins the barrel). If you can fight the urge to run it too close to the edge, it is a good, cheap workaround. Smooth out the sear and strut and it is very nice.
@AirGunWeb yeah every time i adjust it i make sure it wont accidently go off by bumping it against a wall towards a safe direction of coarse with out a scope and have never had any saftey issues
Well done, Rick. You sure put your time in on this one... So, as I look at this gun, what I am seeing is a Crosman Titan with an updated stock and picatinny rail. Does that pretty much sum up this gun (is it mechanically identical to a Titan), or is there something I am overlooking?
That's pretty much it.. I have some new terms.. The Chinese Beemans are "gump guns' as in you never know what you are going to get.. the Crosman Break barrels are "ARS Guns" as in.. almost ready to shoot. Like ARF RC airplanes. You should not have to "work" on a new gun to be able to shoot at 10 yards.
Thanks for watching.. I send people to your channel all the time.. you do great work!
I have the Nitro Venom Dusk in .177 it’s a very accurate gun if you get rid of the Center Point scope. I couldn’t get any kind of consistence out of the Center Point scope at 20 yards. I put a UTG Leapers 3x12x40 on it. I had to pack the trigger with a general purpose moly grease to smooth it out. I’ve shot almost 3000 rounds through mine it will shoots sub dime at 40 yards. 7.2 gr pellets go supersonic in my gun so I shoot the 7.9 HP or the 10 gr Crosman domed pellets.
I imagine that it would. The sad thing to me is that you should not have to replace the scope and rebuild the trigger for a gun to shoot well out of the box. Consider the Ruger 10/22 firearm. Can you imagine what would happen to Ruger if their guns came out of the box like Crosman's? The scarey thing is that I can get a Ruger 10/22 for less than many of Crosman's pellet guns. I'd like to see dollar for dollar for quality. I hope that Crosman raises theirs.
@AirGunWeb I agree they need to step up the quality on air rifles not to mention how horrible the quality control is out of Chinese products. I catch flack all of the time “why don’t you just buy a real gun.” My response is it takes more skill to shoot one of these air rifles especially break barrels. I guess reputation of building quality rifles that will last for generations doesn’t mean anything to Crosman.
Most all of the rim-fire firearm manufactures take pride in the guns they make.
Yep exactly.. They build to price point not the betterment of the sport. Now I can't blame Crosman for making a profit. We keep buying them so they'll keep putting them on the store shelves. However, If we started holding them accountable to do better, maybe, just maybe, they'll respond with better products. They are building "ARF" guns these days. Like "almost ready to fly" RC airplanes,many of their guns are "almost ready to shoot."
@AirGunWeb ARF lol…. and so true it’s a shame you have to spend $600+ on a German air rifle to get a quality gun. I wish I could afford to spend that much on an air rifle.
Sure that's it I can't aim.. funny how I can shoot tenth inch groups at 20 yards with my R9 and TX200, heck even my Trail NP can shoot better than 1/2" groups at 20 yards.
I spent 2 days shooting the Venom and the best I could get I put on camera. It was not me.. it was certainly the gun.
thanks.. that trick does work.. but it is very easy to over adjust leaving the gun in a very unsafe condition.. people like to run it to the bleeding edge.
I just found out that PyramydAir will have them on sale for less on Friday.. $130 and they have an 11% off coupon as well. Check their "black friday" deals link on the top of their site.

@keithsa
That's right.. If you look at crosman's MSRP they price it at $209.99.

@jmurdoc98

Your groups aren't good because you can't aim
bradleygarrett1999 3 months ago
@bradleygarrett1999
Regards.

get a bsa super sport! the gamo triggers can be greatly improved by fitting a longer trigger adjusting screw,very safe and easy to do .
hobo31009 3 months ago
@hobo31009
thanks.. that trick does work.. but it is very easy to over adjust leaving the gun in a very unsafe condition.. people like to run it to the bleeding edge.

i think you will be better off with a gamo cfx

@Rolandmarccolavizza
I would normally agree.. but the CFX has been replaced by the CFR.. I prefer the older CFX.
