  • he made it to the nfl he played for the rams but that was after he messed up his knee he is my hero for shure....

  • this kid was a beast .what pleasure to watch him run.to bad he did'nt get a chance to show his skills in NFL...Maybe a Hall off Famer

  • Dupree was a unit, had the skills 2!But I reckon Jonah Lomu was better!!He was doing the same stuff against grown men at International level and without 'Blockers'!!He had good people looking after him as well.

  • @tikfearce Football and rugby are 2 different things

  • @30293952 & Lomu was on steroids

  • @30293952 Yeah Lomu was on steroids!Island steroids-"Taro",Yeah Rugby is different,we have more players on the field to run through & don't wear Pads & Helmets either!!

  • fuckin' beautiful...

  • LMAO @ 1:58

  • Its like playing NCAA 12 on easy

  • Never say he didnt love the game. Switzer was a asshole for treating him unfair. Dupree was not selfish and was never a hot dog. He loved his lineman and went way out of way to celebrate with them. The bum Switzer admitted he was wrong how he bullied Dupree and tried to humiliate him. Dupree was someone I will never forget. A Southern gentleman who never bitched or complained. Switzer is a miserable coach for running off an amazing player. Hope Switzer has grown up, meglamaniac.

  • @Patriot751 In the movie Switzer said his way of handling Dupree, the best player he ever coached - he said this, was the most regrettable thing he EVER did in his coaching career.

  • NEVER heard of this dude, until the ESPN show. I have to say he reminds me bo jackson but even more athletic and natural of a runner... if that is possible. Incredible.

  • THE FOOTBALL ART

  • very good runner who can make people miss. Da only concern i had wit his runnin was his ball security... easily could have stripped it out of him...Jus surprised nobody stripped it though. If he played now and hold da ball lyke dat...Lot of ball strippin would happen. but a good n powerful runnin back who unfortuntely had a short career.

  • @RSR4EVA He supposedly had amazingly strong hands. His coach Hill in the video, when Marcus taunted him, holding a football in one hand and moving it around in front of him, the coach couldn't pull it away from him

  • 1:41 obvious chop block

  • Comment removed

  • 1:58 epic stiff arm.

  • @lalodub Yes... Marcus Dupree in his prime was faster than Usain Bolt. Secondary players who ran 4.3's in the forty couldn't catch him.

  • saw his video he would have played like the bus (Jerome best). sad what happened to him. he was the best that never was

  • He has such a sad story, Oklahoma screwed him over, you can't understand the feelings I have for this man...Such a humble man as well, truly the Best that Never Was.

  • the absolute WORST music i have ever heard for a highlight video but pretty good clips..

  • fuck its too bad

  • would of been the best! Period..a man child...his 100 was a 9.5

  • On the punt return for the TD starting around 2:20 or so Marcus took 27 steps from the opponents 40 to this end zone. 60 yards in 27 steps. Dang! That's 6.666 feet per step. This guy was the man.

  • CHECK OUT SONY MICHEL OF SPEEDZONE RECRUITS

  • you guys need to see this running back that is just like marcus dupree and in 9th grade check this out PLEASE

  • the greatest ever

  • wish i was old enough to remember this guy

  • switzer u dumbass! u just could'nt give the guy a break could u? he could've been the greatest rb ever and ur constant harsh criticism was his downfall.

  • @tbird09100 my sentiments exactly, it came back to haunt his stupid ass when the scandal broke in 1987-88.

switzer had a slave master mentality, the guy was a freshman and 18 years old, 17 carries 237 yards in one half ..are you fn kidding me.

  • this man is the best in college of all time

  • He was bad ass and he only played his freshman year at OU

  • This is great footage but this video clip is terrible because of the unlistenable music you attached to it. When somebody moves as graceful as Marcus, you need some funky jazz fusion. Had to mute it almost immediately.

  • @funktuall That's yo business. Your opinion is different from others. If you don't like it do as you please. But he doesn't have to change the music because of one persons opinion.

  • @SuperKnight3744 First of all, ALL opinions differ from others. I never asked him change it either. Simply offering some free advice as I often do on my very popular youtube channel about music education. If you can't hear how the whiny voices contrast with Marcus' running, that's yo business. Peace

  • greatest to ever touch a football, if he would have made the nfl after a full college career, his records would stand so far above the rest that no one would ever get close

  • he would have been one of of those guys who got his number retiered and hit the hall of fame, if only he didnt hurt his knee

  • MAN U GO GIRL!

  • Whoever said that he had good blocking can go ahead and stop hating. The blocking was so good that before he got the start, the Sooners were 0-2 that year. Must have been the blocking.

  • This song sucks! Watching Marcus Dupree do his thing, and Blink-182 is what comes to a person's mind. White folks!

  • whats up with only 3 players, 2 who were on the field, and 1 on sidelines going to congratulate him after the Nebraska run 3:18 , that ends the video?

  • @Meni69 This was back when football players acted like they'd been in the end zone before.

  • @Meni69

He wasn't well liked by his teammates. He was a very individualistic player. Never showed up for practice. Switzer even said that in an interview about Dupree. Also said that Dupree didn't really like playing football.

  • he was so sick but oklahoma had some good ass blockers for him

  • @wangstabangsta well did you see his HS vids? not sure who was blocking for him then, but he was sick running up and down the field

  • @Meni69 He didn't need blockers in high school. There were plenty of videos out of 3 guys with their arms around him and he just kept running, carrying the little high school kids.

  • @wangstabangsta yeah they did,

  • @wangstabangsta Marcus didnt need blockers! he didnt even follow blockers! lol this guy was INSANE!

  • The original AP

  • lol 1:42 #82 now thats taking one for the team!

  • idk if anybody noticed but most runningback or fullbacks from years ago are now fat

  • i never heard of this guy until 30 for 30 came out. why arent there any of his college stats online? we only see highlights.

  • he couldve been a bust. no one knows. jamarcus russell has so much god given talent. but has no discipline and became a bust. if russell got injured. then we'd be saying the same thing about him.

  • @coolmusicforyou1 theres no comparison between them unless jamarcus russel manages to get back into shape and actually play another nfl game

  • He made a lot of bad decisions and got screwed by people that he trusted, but this all came down to bad luck. If he hadn't gotten injured in the USFL, then he likely would have gone on to the NFL eventually.

  • @jrsam25 he did go to the NFL

  • @SHITBRICKS2 I meant he would have had a good NFL career. If he hadn't gotten hurt in the USFL he probably could have been a good NFL player.

  • i'm relatively young...so i had never heard of him until this ESPN special...and after watching him play...i have to say that he is the most amazing running back that i have ever seen....he is the ultimate freak....the smoothness of gale sayers...the power of earl campbell and jim brown...the vision and feet of barry sanders...i don't know if there will ever be anyone like him again...not at his size

  • Marcus Dupree had 415 pounds on the bench when texas come to scout him...he benched in 10 times , 10 breathes, 10 seconds. he worked out in his hometown garage cranking his heaters up to where it was 120 degree and wud work out for houirs on in he was literally the closest thing to superman on the football field than i have ever seen much love

  • i saw the film the best that never was its to bad he broke his knee he really was "the best that never was " i mean he was 6'3" 280 pounds ran a 9.5 100 meter and he could juke/break tackles

  • @drumba5 I really hate when people come on hear and try to pretend like they know what they are talking about. He was 235 and ran a 9.5 100 yard dash wich is roughly and 10.4 maybe 10.3 100 meter depending on his top end speed. T

  • @flnative123 um homo i watched the video ok and at one point he was 285 and to proove i know what im talking about he had a little brother who had something wrong with hid legs. he left oklahoma after his freshman year and went to the usfl. he then broke his knee. then he played in the nfl for 2 years and he is now a truck driver

  • @drumba5 He never played at 285 when he got out of shape but he never played at 285

  • @flnative123 well sorry i havent seen the film in forever sorry i didnt get everything right just to please you really im sorry

  • @drumba5 Cerebral Palsy

  • Even on the field amongst teammates he seemed alone feel for him.......oddly enough I can relate to him all to well

  • Not trying to bash what he did in high school but, in college he had some amazing blocking and his second year he was in OU he struggled cuz his line wasnt as good ...just saying

  • @marvin2010rivera1 had nothing to do with the fact he hated his coach and actually quit? not to mention stop trying? that same man also was out for 5 years and came back and ran for 222 yards in his last nfl game. also do we think it is easy to make an nfl roster? look up maurice clarrett see what hes doing.

  • true role model right here he had mabey the biggest heart in the world and if im right im pretty sure that main reason he ran so well was for his brother who chouldent walk thats just incredible

  • @tbell780 but maybe the dumbest brain

  • Why didn't he go to the pros

  • @skatefan5 He had problems in college, then he got hurt

  • @skatefan5 he did usfl was the pros. you should look up all the hall of famers that were in the usfl. its was like ufc and strikeforce. he also again went pro but this time in the nfl with the rams played 2 years and then cut despite being highest rusher for rams. coach wanted a different type back.

  • in my opinion, its actually kind of sad to see a guy with that great size and talent to be wasted by going to oklahoma when he didnt even want to

  • best High school football player ever

  • People always try to blame Switzer. I'm not sure if anyone really could have "handled" him right not knowing that he needed handling. Hindsite 20/20.

I remembered watching him playing and seeing him get loose on about every team he ever played against. He had magic in his stride and ran like no one I had ever seen. Maybe he wasnt meant for it all, maybe he is right where he is supposed to be. I can tell you this, I find a lot of joy watching him run. Take care, Marcus....

  • Just caught this on ESPN. Marcus struck me as a very talented athlete, but a very insecure young man. It seemed like he wasn't prepared to handle the big stage and everything that goes with it. Very sad in a way. Regardless, I'm happy that he is happy with is life now. How many of us have made decisions that curtailed our own potential. I know I have. I think a lot of people can relate to Marcus's story. I can in my own way. God bless Marcus Dupree.

  • @camdavis38 he was prepared and doing well till he blew out his knee. how do you prepare for that? same way theisman prepared for LT? usfl was a talented league. many hall of famers or soon to be played there.

  • @heynow123ism I'm not criticizing Marcus. I'm just saying he wasn't ready for the big stage of Oklahoma. He didn't know how to react to Switzer. That was before his knee injury. He consistently came to practice overweight and didn't really have to prepare the way others did, due to his amazing talent. He even says himself that he should have went back to Oklahoma. He chose to go back to the small Mississsippi college where he felt more comfortable. Regardless, he seems like a great guy.

  • @camdavis38 yea i agree with you. it is weird because i sit here and think wow how sad but then when you think about it he did what he wanted to do and seems really happy and present in life so why am I thinking its sad? just because he doesnt have money? its something i struggle with daily. god bless you all.

  • thumbs up if you came here because you sae this on espn 30 4 30

  • @luckyluke658 yeah i was just watching the 30 for 30 tonight but i gotta turn the channel soon to watch the mosely paquioa fight

  • The greater question is what could he have been like if he had better handlers. Barry Switzer admitted that he blew it with the "greatest running back ever." How does a 17 year old vunderkind from a little southern town handle being pulled on by salivating adults? He doesn't. Dupree was at least as good as Bo and Hershel (broke Hershel's TD record). At 6'3" and 230 pounds he could be hit, touch the ground with his free hand, spring back upright and head for the end zone. Unreal!!

  • AP and LT suck!! LOL

  • He is a MAN

  • im young and i wasnt around to see him play i saw the 30 for 30 movie and damn this bul give me chills when i see him run.all he had to do was slim downand that would had cut the injuries down.but its cool now i get to see chris johnson he's nothing like dupree but alittle close

  • The most emotional part of the documentary was when Hock showed Marcus the old H.S. clips. Marcus was looking at them as a fan like me and all of you were, just in awww of every move. You could literally see him asking himself in his mind if that was really him??? Was I really that good?? You could see him wondering what his life would be like now if things worked out differently, if he had made different decisions.

  • thumbs up if your watching this cuz of seeing this on ESPN

  • this guy could have given up completely after his knee injury, but what makes him the best is that he came back like he knew he could. even if he didn't live up to other people's own expectation, Marcus finally proved something to himself for the first time

  • just watched this last night sad story was gonna a beast!!!

  • @1:27...GO MARCUS!! Love the music you put with this clip, thanks for uploading it..forgot to tell ya that before lol

  • you guys dont know shit about this guy, all you do know is that u watched a video on him. You dont need to advertise that he ran a 9.5 100 yrd dash we all know. btw its not about what he could have been its about the internal wounds the ones ppl cannot see

  • @TheGAM3rFR3Ak or perhaps it is his life and he did exactly what he wanted? perhaps football at one time healed those wounds and then failed in doing so so he moved on? only to come back like the man he is and once again triumph despite all the things against such a comeback? I see dupree I see success I see a greatful man who now appreciates life and seems content. I strive to be such a man. a man who can overcome a man who doesnt blame. a man.

  • @TheGAM3rFR3Ak But Its about so much more. All are amazing stories - his talent and what he couldve been, the lack of wise strong guidance to help a teenage phenom make better decisions, and the pain of loss and the strength to comeback from the devastating consequences of our mistakes... all make his life such an amazing story..

  • @TheGAM3rFR3Ak How are you going to say we dont know shit, neither do you dumbass. The man was a great player and and a great person, the only reason you know anything about him is cause you watched 30for30. Congrats

  • he reminds me of eric dickerson

  • The best that never was, was the best documentary I have ever seen. Marcus Dupree is one of the greatest that has played football!!

  • I really don't like the idea of pimping ESPN any, but 30 for 30 is an epic show. Even the weaker topics are intriguing. The Dupree episode was awesome, He could have an NFL great for certain!!!

  • This guy was the best thing i ever saw at running back in college and i've seen alot of them, he was speed and power wrapped in one package!

  • i watched the espn 30 for 30 on him. and after watching it i can honesty say. if he stayed at ou and stayed healthy he would be one of the best 3 rb we have ever seen

  • @bigbent06 Yeah, but the problem was that Switzer was going to run him into the ground before he had the chance. He wasn't going to stay healthy with the workload he faced at OU. What a shame, seemed like his career went about 10 minutes and we never really had any idea what he was capable of achieving.

  • I still remember watching his first game, and the rest of the season. BOOMER SOONER BABY!!!!! We still think Marcus was the greatest running back anywhere, anytime.

  • marcus dupree was a big blink 182 fan. all kidding aside, great footage.

  • I heard he's got a good life, shows trotting horses, travels around, has won many trophies. fts a pity he couldn't have realized his full potential as a running back but that's life. Football's not everything. He's happy, many famous footballers and others are not.

  • The guy was a total STUD...best college runnig back I ever saw (before or since). If he would've made it to the NFL people would be chasing his records. A lot of things went wrong for him though (some self-inflicted, some not) and what I saw in the documentary was a man with a lot of regrets. I honestly think Switzer's problem was "there can only be one big dog in Oklahoma"...what an egomaniac...

  • what a awsome football player if you took peterson earl cambell and bo jackson you might get marcus dupree did you see the size of him at 14 years old,if he could of gone to the nfl when he was 19 everybody would have known him.I was in aww

  • I watched the story of Marcus Dupree on ESPN last night. Me & my husband were in tears!!! I will never forget this story. I have been thinking about Marcus Dupree all day!

  • I was just a young kid in the 1980s.. I always thought Bo Jackson and Walker were the only power backs with speed... ESPN 30 for 30 Schooled me on Marcus Dupree... I can only imagine what might have been...

  • best football player to ever live

  • @TheSwissy45 ....Walter Payton says you can kiss his ass.

  • @tonyleva35 hee hee hee... Barry Sanders made NFL Pros look like what Marcus did to those college lads too.

Apples and oranges really... but guys like Sweetness that did it on the next level really do have something to crow about comparatively.

  • He has what recruiters call a 2-step. Which means every 5 yards he takes 2 strides. Only other 2-step i can think of is Vince Young.

  • This is great. That episode of 30 for 30 last night was awesome. I understand the title "The Best that Never Was" but Marcus Dupree will always be. All "what ifs" be damned. These things last as long as they last. Like life. He seems like a good dude too. Hock did a great job. And I'm loving these highlights.

  • 6'3" 235 lbs returning punts??? COME ON MAN!!!!! Bo did'nt return punts! : D

you can see the defenders were scared of him.

  • that was the best episode of 30 for 30 episode yet by a mile. Long Live Marcus Dupree!

  • When you are 19 years old you are indestructable and think that you will be young forever You blink your eyes, make life choices and the next thing you know it's 25 years later and you are left wondering if you made all the right choices and if you followed the right path?? That is the lesson that Marcus Dupree's story teaches us. Time waits for none of us. Do everything you are capable of doing to reach your full potential, because if you don't you will look back and wonder "what if??"

  • I just watched the 30 @ 30 special. Freaking AWESOME! Very touching that wanted to run hard for his little brother Reggie. I must admit, I shed a tear when he was talking about his brother at the end while tearing up. Great redemption though. He made his dreams come true after all that...great great story.

  • Amazing story, and a real-life hero for all those who have had feelings like Marcus. Marcus is an inspiration for many.

  • What an amazing movie

    Very sad story

If only he had stayed healthy, stayed at OU, and had a strong work ethic, who knows how good he could have been.

  • its sad to see stories like this at least he played in the pros and is happy

  • apparently barry switzer treated him like total shit from the very start and fucked his mind up......stupid idiot coach

  • this guy was sick, the 30 for 30 was great too

  • Dupree was 6 feet, 3 inches tall and weighed 235 sculpted pounds. He ran a 9.5 100-yard dash and bench-pressed 400 pounds with ease. And, at that size, he had Gale Sayers-like moves. You watch those film clips and you will see that the biggest kid on the field makes the rest of them look like they are in slow motion.

  • @Meni69 I saw the ESPN film last night. It was profoundly sad in my opinion. What a waste. Barry Switzer has a bit of responsibility for what happened, and I think he admitted that in so many words in the film. And people wonder if there is anything to all these allegations surrounding Cam Newton and money. They need to watch the film.

  • @Meni69 Too bad he was a mental midget.

  • @creepfever I guess you weren't aware that Dupree won a Scholar Athlete award after his only year at OU.

I'm sure you've never made a mistake in your life though, being the intellectually superior jagoff that you are...

  • @Meni69 He was the definition of greatness. Every time a game was over, you had to sit back and say, this is the best running back I've ever seen bar none.

  • @Meni69 he benched 400 pounds 10 times as a senior in high school

  • @Meni69 its actually the opposite. he looks like hes in slow motion and everyone is trying so hard to catch him, but he just pulls away.

  • @Meni69 Usain Bolt Ran a world record 9.72 100m. You're saying this guy was faster than Usain Bolt? Who was running the stop watches?

  • Thanks Barry Switzer...for nothing.

  • Roger Goodell sees this clip, hands down $175,000 fine for the collision @ 00:23.

  • @Geldric Roger goodell is an idiot and never played football before ;)

  • @Geldric Lmao straight up huh, or the hit the linebacker from Texas made on Dupree that gave that nigga a concussion. Goodell aint know shit about football.

  • @Geldric for the running back hahaha

  • Hock films asked me to send them the dvd that was the source for the 3 vids, and they said they used some of the clips. wohoooo. i'm debating a football writer than Marcus could have been better than Bo Jackson

  • @Meni69 Im from Alabama and until i saw that documentary last nite my mind was conviced that Bo Jackson was the greatest runningback of all time HS-Pro...But i dont know now after seeing this guy....I dont know though...they are awfully similiar so its hard to tell...but bo was about same size and ran just as fast if not faster.....bo ran like a 10.3 in the 100 meter in track.....thats is amazingly fast for a guy his size...i think he actually ran faster than that but i cant remember..

  • Comment removed

  • @Meni69 He definitely would've been better that Bo!!! Bo was good but Dupree was a better all around athlete

  • Espn 30 for 30 brought me here

  • He was the best that never was. I had season tickets for Arizona in USFL and was at the game at Sun Devil Stadium when he blew his knee out. Didnt even look like a bad hit, but then he didnt get up. Sad story.

  • perfect song and lyrics for a Marcus Dupree tribute. He would have been one of the best RB's if he didn't do what the voices in his head told him to.

  • Those are some good blocks

  • guys, the espn 30 for 30 film, the best that never was, is on Tuesday 8 pm espn

some of these clips are in the film

spread the word to football fans and sooner fans

  • Marcus made a NFL comeback with the Rams in the early 90s after being encouraged to do so by Walter Payton. Marcus changed his number to 34 for Payton and after leading the team in rushing in preseason quit to take care of his dying mother. A lot of his problems at Oklahoma were rumored to be home sickness.

  • couldve been one of the best!! i bet he looks back now and wishes he wouldve worked harder

  • This guy was a cross between Earl Campbell and Bo Jackson...just an incredible back. I f he would've taken the proper channels to the pros he would've been an absolute nightmare...but I guess we'll never know. I will label him as the biggest "waste of talent" I've ever seen...hands down!!!!

  • Why did he quit the team, did he ever play in the pros?

  • @mav616 - DuPree left for the USFL, made a few million and busted his knee. Career over.

  • I was a sophmore in highschool when I was a sooner and man he was a freak of nature..listed at 6'3" 235 but guys who played with him say he was closer to 250 or more because he wasn't in tip top shape. as a high schooler he ran the 100meters in 10.3 and the 200 20.5. as a freshman in college he was a man among boys but unfortunately just got caught up in the system.

  • Amazing amazing aback. When he made his comeback I believe he gained almost 100llbs and got back into shape. Great baseball player as well. I think he got caught up in the #'s game with the Rams or was the Raiders.

  • Marcus had a comeback to the NFL with tthe Rams but cut it short to take care of his dying Mom. That makes him great.

  • The most highly recruited highschool football player ever. They wrote a damn book about him. But it's like they say, "The saddest thing in life is wasted talent."

  • @jlangston23

Well, he did get drafted to the USFL but injuries ended his career. After Walter Payton encouraged him to come back years later, he did make it with the Rams, but he wasn't very effective and eventually got cut. He was never the same after the knee injury.

But since then, his life's been good. He's been very successful, been an executive several times owns some successful businesses. So his life turned out great.

  • Ex Georgia Tech star/Eddie Lee Ivery set NCAA record, 356yds/game.Packers drafted him #1 in 79. 3rd carry/1st game at Chicago when they had turf, he blows his knee. Came back in 80, had a good year, 821yds. 81 season starts, 1st game at Chicago, blows his knee on his 14th carry. 82 was a strike year, 9 games, but he only showed flashes & lost a step or 2 also. Then he got into drinking, coke, went to rehab. Injured his knee in 84 or 85 & he retired as a slot WR after 86. Sad.

  • I have the Arizona St v. Oklahoma bowl game & he was a man among boys. He had the style & speed of Eric Dickerson but bigger. What was DuPree, 6'3" 235lbs? He left the bowl game a couple of times (injuies? to rest?) & still rushed for over 200yds. He was AMAZING!!!!!!!! What happened to him, aside from the knee surgery?

  • ESPN's going to air a special about him next year.

  • He WAS as good as Eric Dickerson. The only reason Marcus didn't make it was b/c of a youthful mental thing. He missed hos Momma when he was at OU. He was from Philadelphia, Mississippi.

  • And he had a shit work ethic. Barry Switzer got so frustrated over him because he didn't have the work ethic. It's what separates him from Adrian Peterson. AD had the work ethic along with the ability.

  • Yes a classi case of what might have been. He was every bit as good a Eric dickerson.

  • Could have been the best ever. Sad story.

  • and
