yeah wright , you asshole... i' noticed it too !!! good for us :DD now let's all go and try to get at least as near as possible to this level of improvisation :)
It's like he's LITERALLY speaking with the guitar. Like how when we talk, we don't think very much about what we're saying, we just go with it. Guthrie does that very thing. It's so natural sounding and sounds like it's been rehearsed countless times but in reality, he's just making it up as he goes.
I wish the fellowship would come out with an album...that would be just as kick ass as Guthrie coming out with a new solo ablum...either way, if both happen, my library wont b without both of them...God bless 'em
@arpeggios070590 they did fairly recently but didn't work out well apparently so they weren't keeping. I think they might be giving it another go soonish.
his technique is so flawless, his note choice and phrasing so mature, evolved, musical, and different. you can hear a a little steve vai sometimes, some joe pass and a few others but he puts it all together so much more completely. I love to play and I think I"m pretty decent...advanced whatever but I feel MILES behind him.......I love to listen to alot of players but I really think right this minute, he leads the pack.
@TASGuitar7@ShreFever92Idk where ya'll are coming from with all this shit. I'm Just going to say that you have some misconstrued take on what i said. So fuck you...fuck you...and fuck you...i'm out.
I had the privilidge of seeing the Fellowship twice at the basement. Paultry words like awesome, amazing etc just don't do them justice. One thought that I was struck by, was when we left. You realise you've just watched 5 of the greatest musicians on the planet for a fiver in a tiny little club amongst about 30 other people.
What the fuck is with ALL YOU TROLLIN ASS MOTHER FUCKERS ON YOUTUBE! I was just stating a fact. Having a certain type of hand can give you some advantages with playing any instrument. I was not by any means insinuating that Guthrie is good because of his hands. You have to be dumb as fuck to assume that and i guess my point is proven because some of you are dumb as fuck!
Awesome, Guthrie's music is the Beauty andy the Beast in one mind blowing package! Anybody got the South Park reminiscence at 3:36?
Regarding the hands issue: It is true that everybody has different hands, but this should be viewed as individual sets of possibilities rather than limitings! Different people are capable of learning certain techniques easier than others. It can be useful to seek out licks that are more natural for your hands as a starting point, and find your own licks.
Its kind of weird when people compare John Petrucci and Guthrie Govan! They both are excellent in their own right! Petrucci is very out of the box and so is Govan. The way they express their musicality is different so learn to appreciate that and chill!
HOW CAN HE IMPROV THAT SHIT?! it takes me hours and hours to compose something with even half the musicality. He's making it up on the spot and then forgetting it as if it was nothing! GAHH! HE'S SUCH A GOD!
HOW CAN HE IMPROV THAT SHIT?! it takes me hours to compose something with even half the musicality of what he's playing and he's making it up on the spot and then forgetting it like it was nothing! GAHHH WHAT A GOD!
jesus, his musicality is off the charts! he knows exactly what to say and how to say with his instrument. honestly i don't care if you are the fastest guitar player on earth and you know every scale... if you don't play with musicality it doesn't account for shit.
@Andrexthor, where the fuck do you get off being an asshole to me man, why? Do you have some complex with superiority and get some sort of high by saying those things. I practice diligently every day for at least 2 hours, and play for about 4 hours. So go listen to so miles davis and chill the fuck out...Maybe a Zan-ex?
Does anybody if is he using the cornford roadhouse for his solo and adding some boost pedal? I am very interesting in buying a cornford roadhouse but i do not find any good reviews!!!
find a guitar that fits your grip and feels and sounds good and practice your fucking ass off to you want to throw it against the wall. play with a lot of different types of musicians and your on your way!
@kingding6thats a good point maybe i have hope yet, i'm still young so i have alot of time to develp alot more dexerity and strenching capabilities, guthrie still has perfect hands for guitar. It is alot easier for him to do all of those crazy runs and tapping and freakish stretching as does holdsworth.
@tommie997 honestly it's more about quality than quantity. I'm sure that guthrie played perposterous amounts of guitar, but he studied all the right things, transcribed all the time (and everything), and also TAUGHT, which had him playing for ages and ages every single day.
@andymcguitar I don't think so man, Petrucci said he practiced 6 hours a day all through berklee and his teenage years and he's fantastic, but def not at Guthries leval.
@Kingding6 Haha you cant say that. Because John Petrucci has released some breathtaking albums that influence thousands and thousands of guitarists today!!
guthrie has the most absolute perfect hands for playing guitar. I'm so fucking jealous, their long and thin, but still have alot of muscle definition, a very flat and thick palm, a wide set thumb, and giant all together hands. My hands are just long and thin, so their are so many possibilities that people like guthrie and allan can do on guitar that i will never be able to do because of my hands.
@nclempark wow you're a fag. guthrie's good just because hes fuckin good. not becaus eof his "perfect hands" if you had his hands, you would still not be good at guitar...
@ShredFever92 I have to say i agree with your first point, but guthries hand are abnormally big, and however you look at that, it helps in all manner of things!
@dchisey nah man i was in a masterclass with him the other day and he says that he never sat down for 3 hours and practiced a scale. he learnt everything by listening to records. and the reason hes fast is because hes been playing 25 years haha and he just developed the mind and finger strength to be able to do that
@TheCHILV Well he never "practiced" in the traditional sense, but he definitely played a lot in his younger years (and probably to this day). Its like you said he used to spend lots of time transcribing, jamming to records/with musicians & reading music theory books to kind of put it all together. Essentially this is what were all trying to accomplish when we practice, its just most people don't like transcribing because its hard work. Guthrie definitely put many hours of "practice" in though
@metatronco not many musicians realize that's the only way to reach the master levels of musicianship and, for most, is the only thing holding them back. if you just learn every run and scale perfectly then you're just a machine running scales all day. the day you start listening to your own playing is the day you understand where they fit and why they are important, and also, why they are not.
@ShredFever92 it has little or nothing to do with his hands, and most or everything to do with his beard. If we all had guthrie's beard, we'd all be fusion guitar gods.
@nclempark well build some muscle in your hands by practicing and stop bitching about how the people that have spent countless hours working on something are better at it than you
wish he would slow down and play something truly beautiful and tasteful already. Yes, guthrie, we know you are the best rock guitarist on earth...now please stop and take a look at yourself. Its time to play something that can make people cry and is so beautiful, we just dont know what to do with ourselves.
@hellookelly What if he doesn't feel like slowing down? I mean beautiful soulful music is one of my favorite kinds. But there is a mood for that kind of music, and there is a mood for in your face, bluesy, countrified, fusion-y shred, and I guess Guthrie is always in that mood. Who are you to tell someone else what kind of music to play? If you're not in the mood for this music then don't listen to it, and when you are, then listen to it. BTW, Eric and Uncle Skunk are beautiful in my opinion.
i love guthrie even more than he loves that mona lisa shirt!

wish he would slow down and play something truly beautiful and tasteful already. Yes, guthrie, we know you are the best rock guitarist on earth...now please stop and take a look at yourself. Its time to play something that can make people cry and is so beautiful, we just dont know what to do with ourselves.

@hellookelly it will be interesting to see what crops up on his next album :P. In the meantime, however, I think these are quite moving performances:
Guthrie Govan and Andy Timmons playing 'Little Wing'
Guthrie Govan soloing on 'We Roll'
I'm aware you may have seen them already, and that you may also disagree :)
