I did it while typing! So yes, it should be 47 kg lift, not 471. One problem is that we do not know how much the saucer weighs or if it was completely filled with helium. It landed by itself after springing a leak at 1700 feet. So it probably weighs about 15 kg when empty.

Lets assume the height inside to be 5 feet we get 1570 cubic feet.
One cubic foot of helium lifts 30g so this saucer should lift at least 471000 g and that is more than 80 lb. Falcon weighs less than that.
Now let us see your calculations?

One cubic foot of helium can lift 0,05 lb.
The radius is 10 feet which gives a cross section area of pi * r2 = 314 square feet.
If the saucer was shaped like a 5 feet high hockey puck this would yield a volume of
5 * 314 = 1 570 cubic feet.
This could lift 1 570 * 0.05 lb = 78,5 lb
Falcon weighs 50 lb.
There is nothing WRONG with this very simple calculation. Your comment is WRONG.

Actually a cubic foot of helium could lift 0.067 lb under normal air pressure and temperature, not 0.05 lb. (I checked it.)
So the saucer should at least be able to lift

It is easily calculated: diameter of balloon is 6 m or 20 feet, you can see that for yourself! - and volume is approximately 1/3 of a sphere with radius 3 m.
Volume is therefore 1/3 * (4 * 3.14 * 3 * 3 * 3 / 3 ) = 37.7 m3
Each cubic meter helium lifts 2 lb. So the balloon will lift 75.4 lb.
This is a very rough estimate but it should be approximately right.
A 10 x bigger balloon could have lifted the whole family Heene.

Again a reference by one of the children to 'the show'. These kids were coached on this whole thing.

Notive that the father never called 911. He called the FAA and then the local news station. I was the mother who then called 911. I think dad cooked up the idea for the hoax and recruited his sons to pull it off... without telling mom what was up... so mom actually thought the boy was really missing, hence her authentic emotional reaction. This makes sense to me, 'cus a mother would typically not approve of such a stunt, so the father knew he would have to pull it off without telling his wife!

I think that dad is just a natural attention-whore (excuse my language c:) but obviously if you put your family on a reality show and you have your little child rap about being "pussified", there is something wrong with his parenting skills. Like when I can't find someone or something, my first reaction is to check EVERYWHERE. Not call the police and say something dramatic happened. It's not like he ran away, he was in their house.

Not my place to suggest the "why" but shameful if the parents (family) 'staged' this for publicity. Many many volunteers and professionals spent a great amount of time pursuing this matter..the taxpayers ultimately paying for this exercise in futility as it obviously turned out. Sad.
