They pinch to make your voice higher when you sing. The pinch from what I seen, came into the pow wow circle in the early 90's but is now starting to lose it's popularity in contest singing, because it is not natural singing, & loses you points if you do so in a contest, but it all depnds on the contest your in. Some deduct points, some don't, either way, I think even those that pinch, can sing just as well without pinching to be honest...
