  • Genesis Version was my favorite it's the one i grew up with because i had MK1,MKII,MK3, and UMK3

  • It is sad snes ending didn't have the pictures, but it could be a storage problem on the cartiegde not enough space for the pics, or the game wasn't optimeze to handled the ending pics at ending (because in MK II it could be handled), but anyway good times :D

  • sega does what nintendon't

  • (Acrade version-raiden's )name is spelled wrong on the (console versions "RAYDEN")

  • No SEGA Saturn version? :(

  • @whitemamba345 its actually a black heart

  • That is a heart but no blood or beating so yeah hard to see

  • I own almost all versions of the game, MD/Gen, SNES, MS, GG, GB, MCD/SCD, even the Amiga version, and my favorite is the Mega CD/Sega CD version.

I dont play the MS-DOS version, but looks really cool, almost arcade perfect

  • snes looked the best but megadrive had the blood and i remember back in school days how important it was. the gore was mortal kombat at the time so it will have tobe the sega version although sound and graphics were shitty. snes was great sound and graphics but thats it not quite the same without the gore!!!

  • my brother thinks that a game doesnt need gameplay to be good. it needs graphics. i should show him the snes and genesis versions of the game.

  • You forgot about amiga version,it has best music from all of them and its the fastest one.

  • The best port is the PC version :P

  • @nyerguds PC CD version to be more specific.

  • @Ketorulz lol yes. Just got my hands on that one ;)

  • Yep, besides the "faster" processor in the Genesis, the SNES was technically superior in almost every way. The Genesis didn't even really have a 16-bit sound chip.

Yeah, I never really played in the arcade, so I didn't notice the flaws in the SNES version. But even after playing the SNES port of MK3, I can no longer stand how sluggish 1&2 are on there.

Hah, CD-ROM load times are a major reason I didn't get a CD console until 2003.

  • why did you ignore the MS-DOS port and also the Gameboy port? The MS-DOS mortal kombats ports are almost arcade perfect.

  • @colliric I have to agree, the MS-DOS version was almost arcade perfect.

  • @VastVenin

yeah but you have to get the CD-Rom version because the Disk version sucks... but the Cd-Rom MS-Dos version is perhaps the best port of the lot.

  • Hey liked this video alot! I too grew up on the Snes version of MK1 but I think if they took the character sounds and the music from the snes and put it on the arcade it would be Outstanding!

  • It's been a while since I've seen that. Wow, time flies. :)

  • having played each version back in the day for me the ega Drive (Genesis) version was best overall despite it's faults... I'll take instant loading, full gore and decent gameplay over the Sega CD's annoying loading and the SNES's lack of gore, slitchy animation and horrendous gameplay/controls anyday!!

  • I Grew up with the snes version and looking at this revieuw, is still think SNES had the best port

  • I also hear that the Mega Dirve port had a Japanese subtitle over in that region. Full name was Mortal Kombat: Shinken Kourin Densetsu. Anyone know what that means?

  • Damn the Sega CD has the washed out look of the Genesis but plays almost like the arcade, gore and everything included I may have to track this version down.

  • i snes looked better and sounded bette, but i didn't like the game play it was slower and glitchy

  • great review, great job on explaining all the differences

  • i still have the super nintendo version, i dont play it no more tho.

  • Comment removed

  • The SNES could have blown them all away had they kept the blood and gore. Seriously.

  • Great video keep up with good work. Sweetality!!!!!!!

  • dude.. the best is the arcade version. its THE version. how can there even be a discussion over it? lol

  • Dudes, OF COURSE the Arcade version is the best version, that was never in question. It was the hunt for the best PORT on the consoles. Thats what these videos are all about.

  • @RetrowareTV I didn't like the arcade version, I much preferred it on the Genesis. The controller was a lot easier to do the combos for special moves and fatalities and such than the arcade controls.

  • @RichieEastside Genesis version does have the best controls.

  • @RetrowareTV

I think you should have included the home computer ports as the MS-dos version makes the Snes one look horrid.

  • @RetrowareTV Hey, seems like a good retrospective, but incomplete. How come you didn't include the PC port? Which would have settled your arguement on which port is best ;) Well, except for the random freeze bugs. Still, a retrospective should include everything it can :)

  • @SatansMullet LOL there was some moron posting a comment saying that the genesis version was better than the arcade version. Stupidity annoys me.

  • yes the best version is the arcade and pc version becouse the pc version is almost arcade perfect.

  • @DetroitFanatic DUH.

  • The fact that the Sega CD version looked crappier than the SNES version, just goes to show you how lazy they were. With the capacity of a CD, they should have been able to fit an almost perfect arcade port. Instead it's just the Sega cartridge version, with the missing frames of animation added back in, and better sound. And the loading makes the game annoyingly unplayable.

  • Kano's wallet grip of Death

  • The gameboy was shit

  • i agree but mortal kombat 2 on the gameboy was pretty good

  • I dont have the 2nd one on gb i had it on gennesis.

  • Plus I noticed a Nintendo fuck up in the SNES ending for Scorpion. They censored the word "assassination" in Sub-Zero's ending into "Destruction", but for Scorp's end, they left "death" uncensored

  • Its kinda ironic how Nintendo had Sub-Zero's head rip censored into him freezing you and smashing you, then Midway end up putting it in MK2.

  • its sad, the SNES version could hav been near arcade perfect

  • In my opinion, the Sega Mega CD version is just the Sega MegaDrive version with arcade tracks and load times.

  • Also with bloody goro's lair stage.

  • I have the Arcade [on PS2, MK Deception Premium Pack] version, the SNES version and the Gameboy version.

*The best graphics are in the arcade.

*SNES had the scariest sounding bgm.

*It is a pain in the ass to do specials on the Gameboy version.

Btw, I have a GamePro magazine from 9/1994. In the Buyers Beware section, it states that two buyers had a hard time getting the Sega CD MK to run, where [upon loading] the game just froze up.

Has anyone here ever experienced that?

  • grate review best on youtube

  • buccieri, Gameplay?, they both had the same gameply they are fighting games.

    Do you mean controls?

  • lOL KANO pulls a rock out of you in the snes version

  • kano nicked his wallet instead of his heart

  • And Genesis version has better music. Especially in second stage with buddah's statue.

  • Dude!! You guys are making me feel old. I remember all the fuss about the super nes version.

I even think people were claiming to put bounties on Nintendo Execs. Haha!!

  • Yeah man, tell me about it, I still play this game pretty regularly and sometimes I sit back and think damn, I am old i was 12 when this game came out, I been playing this game for 17 years

  • makes ya wonder where all the time has gone doesn't it?

  • This is the single most influential game to come out during the 16-bit wars. It helped define the two consoles and sway the war in Sega's favor in my opinion at least for a little while. After the release of MK people saw the Genesis as the cool adult system and the SNES as kiddie. A year later Midway would release MKII on the SNES and help fix the problem somewhat... but the kiddie image is something Nintendo has been unable to shake to this day.

  • @BladeRunner2681 i no right

  • Review Art Of Fighting (SNK) for the Neo-Geo, SNES, and Sega MegaDrive/Genesis.

  • i thought the PC version was VERY VERY good

  • The fatalities in the SNES version are hilarious, thanks a lot Nintendo XD

  • Yeah they learn there lesson, so MK2 is on the SNES was the best one to get. Of all the ports at the time. It is uncut, all blood fatality, not as perfect as the ARCADE but close.

  • No blood on the SNES version of MK??? I'm shocked! I've always wondered what the SNES version was like since I've never seen or played it.

  • I remember on the SNES version, everytime I uppercut Sonya on the pit level, she would fall screaming like a man. LOL!

  • How do i find reptile? its been 15 years.

  • flawless someone twice at the pit and fatality

  • About Goro, they forgot to mention that he is unlockable for play in the Game Boy version of MK via a special secret trick after defeating Shang Tsung.

  • Like the narrator I grew up playing the Super NES and had played that version's MK I will admit I enjoy the Sega Genesis version way better. Not because of the blood but because it is just more fun to play. The Super NES version does look nice and I play the hell out of it but mostly I prefer the Genesis version simply because it just had more to enjoy.

  • I'm partial to the Genesis port, since others weren't available to me. I dont even think I was aware (at the time) about SNES's port/or cared.

  • XD At 5:48 Nice review but i prefer the Arcade version better

  • If you had the 6 button genesis controller it was perfect for mk.

  • I like the snes one the best but thats just me shame that the blood was never in it but blood is not everything

  • the genesis had the best soundtracks, catchy tunes while the others were just noise :S

  • r u retarded??? the snes version is possibly ur fave?? that game played like shit! it was totally screwed up from the arcade. the genesis version had really accurate gameplay and the sega cd version almost perfected it.

  • Kano pulls out your arm pit hair.

  • Tryin to play with a LAME three button Sega Controller was just impossble and unbearable.

Sega made a BIG mistake with this controller.

  • Well in 1989 when the Genesis was released, games like Street Fighter II hadn't come out yet, so there was no way to tell how popular fighting games would become and therefore no need for a 6 button controller. After the SNES and SFII came out, Sega then said "Ok, we need to release a 6 button controller so we can get all those cool fighting games too and stay competitive."

  • I love it when they go ''AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA'' when they fall to their doom at 6:33.

    That cracks me up,lol

    5 stars and favorited

  • SNES version does not have blood on it, only Genesis version.

  • and that is what is said in the review.

  • Guess hes one of those tards who watches 10 seconds and makes a hasty comment.

  • Great review and history. 5 stars.

  • Great comparison video. I've always liked the SNES version out of any of them.

  • Actually, politics was also partly why Nintendo's mortal kombat had no blood. The big N basically went to the congress critters, and showed them the bad, nasty genesis version, which started the controversy that lead to the creation of the ESRB.

  • Did you call Nintendo "the big N"?

    Jesus Christ...

  • I like that you can review games without screaming or cursing every 2 seconds.

The comparisons are also reallllly nice.

  • That sucks that the music is all wrong in the Sega CD version.

  • I love your work...I myself, was a genesis man...the mortal monday poster was on my wall, counting down the days...up, up down down b left right? or is that contra..

    cheers

  • the code was, a,b,a,c,a,b,b at the screen where theres text talking about codes if done right you hear "get over here!" and the text will turn red and at teh bottom it will say "prepare for kombat!"

  • That's gay that you got seven thumbs down! I agree with you, that this reviewer fucking nit picks. It made me mad when he said the character anitmation sucks on the genesis. Who notices that crap! So much emphasis on character animation! who gives a shit!

  • He's not nit picking. I loved the Megadrive version. In fact, I'll admit I'm a massive Megadrive fanboy. He's just comparing the different ports using undeniable logic. You can't get a better comparison that split-screen videos. And he never said "it sucks". Unlike you, this reviewer isn't so childish. He's very good and I enjoyed this video very much.

  • Actually, whilst mentioning cd technology he said that it sucked.

  • Back then it did. Awful load times as he clearly stated.

  • "Kano rips out um...I, just don't know."

    lol

  • y didn't u talk about the game boy version, it was the only version where u could play as goro?

  • I'm pretty sure you can block and still fight reptile. What I think you mean if you can't block attacks because that chips your health

  • I played both Snes and Genesis versions, they are both good. What really surprised me is the PC version that is missing in this video. It was for the 386 or 486 computer (PC)

The PC version has the best animations then any console in this video.

  • wow, I think the SNES version was the best after all (besides arcade). I had to suffer with the Game Gear version for YEARS until I got MK II for SNES. I just got the original a few days ago for $5. Totally worth it. Also, its worth noting there is a Mortal Kombat TV Game for ~$10 new that is supposed to be almost arcade perfect.

  • If ya got a PSP they got a midway classic combo that has tha 1st 3 original MK games

  • I have very fond memories of Mortal Kombat for the Genesis, sure, it wasn't arcade perfect, but overall it was solid and the controls was tight enough for it to be super enjoyable. :)

  • Wow I loved the background going black on the Sega CD version of the Pit Stage during the koncking off fatality that was awesome.

  • I had the SNES version and loved it. In fact, I regret selling my old system years ago, but the fact it didn't have blood didn't bother me and I had the peripheral device (what was that thing called?) that would change the color from gray to red, but the game play was paramount.

  • The Game Genie is what your thinking of. They had codes to change the color of the "sweat" to different colors, but still no fatalities. Even without the blood, fatalities, I still liked the game better then the Genesis port.
