The real Stephen Colbert is a registered Democrat. The "Stephen Colbert" character claims to be an independent, even though he is clearly to the right (this is a play on O'Reilly, a Republican, who claimed to be an independent for so long.) Colbert did not run as an independent in SC. He tried to run in both the Republican and Democratic primaries, but when the Republican proved to be too expensive, he stuck with the Democratic primary, until they refused to include him on the ballot.
