Primo montaggio della storia, prima vittima di pirateria, primo film horror, prima retrospettiva cinematografica della storia. Della serie "nostalgia di epoche mai vissute". Fuck yeah.
I am overjoyed seeing this amazing film, it is incredible how this director was ahead at his age and his imagination, i wish i could have lived in this age and seeing it for the first time, it lift me up.
83 years before the start of Pixar, it's pretty impressive to see how the tech evolve in so short time. If only human beings could evolve in the same way.
The quality is terrific! The special effects were ASTOUNDING for their time. The skeleton cracked me up no end, it was pretty out of proportion. I chuckled when it popped up out of nowhere. The bat was great as well.
And look at the imagination employed in this film. When film was young, directors experimented with what they could film and what film could be. Nowadays, they still experiment, but not as much.
This is not real. I could tell at the end when the crucifix saved the day.
The opposite happens in real life. HIS-story clearly indicates that folks waving crucifixes around usually end up releasing much EvIL perpetuated against other humans, i.e. inquisitions, crusades, witchhunts, modern Vatican knights employed by Hitler and Mussolini, and 60 million heathens wiped out in the Americas.
*wink wink* nudge nudge* your mind is being screwed with on so many levels, made Linda Blairs head spin :)
Mentioned in a book on Dracula in the chptr. on filmography. Giant bat turns into Mephistopheles . Cavalier arrrives and brandishes a crucifix or cross which repels the fiend.
Despite titles about "vampires" (vamps), Nosferatu and Dracula remain the earliest true vampire movies/
To think it all started with stop-motion bedsheet ghosts armed with brooms. What must be the first on-screen appearance of a vampire, however, is quite notable.
"In 1896, the first horror film was shot. It was only three minutes long but it proved that fear could be contained and retold countless times. The Devil's Castle scared it's audience and gave them a taste of what horror films would be in the future." -Devin Watson- Horror film screenwriter in his book "Horror Screenwriting. The Nature of Fear." Chapter 1, Page 2.
I believe it was the first horror film made, and it was made by the French. It's great that you have this on here, I was curious as
First 'American' horror film (first Frankenstein character related film as well) considered to be Edison's Frankenstein in 1910. Lasted aprox 13+ minutes. Only 1 found print exists/ed due to destruction of all silver nitrates. Any other horror themed films released between 'House' & 'EF'? - Chris Yambar

Interesting film trickery for the time period. I love the part where the four ghosts pop up, the last actor walks into the wall.
juantrippe82 3 months ago
I think this is pretty cool, plus it's considered the first vampire and horror film (even though they never intended it to scare people).

Ancient in presentation today...I think this would look like a hell alot of fun being one of the actors back then!

Judging by the year this came out, this film was only a year before the Dracula novel was written and published.
