You've got Infantry, multiple forms, you've got Patriot Missile Launchers and their analysts, you've got Communications interceptors and Psychological Operations Specs. (Me). Everyone gets the job that they are fit for, not necessarily the one that they want, but the one they'll be good at.
We do have minimum standards to get into the military, and contrary to your belief, I am not lacking upstairs even remotely. Not that you would know, but the ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) is our way of testing the mental capacity of recruits. The test goes up to 99 points. I received 90, my best friend, a 98. We got 4.0 gpa's in High School and were both in National Honor Society. Point is...we've basically got rocket scientists in our military.
I will agree with you to an extent. There are some that are not strong, intellectually. Infantry is the primary area for most of these guys to go. That being said, they are still some of the best soldiers. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to pull a trigger. And if it comes down to a Harvard grad that doesn't like to get his hands dirty and a weight-lifting Louisiana farm boy that dropped out of High School and looks forward to deer season, i'd much rather have the farm boy by my side.
