through out this movie i just kept thinking ok there has gotta be a deeper meaning to this. mabe trash humping is just a way of showing how fucked up ppl can be? and how bad society is these days?? since these old ppl are jut going around smashing things drinking and humping things. (trash) there's also a kid who like kills this little baby doll so its like how the next generation becomes corrupt. but other then that i have no idea. and i have that weird 3 little devils song stuck in my head.
I just saw it last night, and it will stay with me forever, unlike most of the big hollywood production i did not remember the next day. Did I enjoy it ? No. Do I recomend it ? No. but I couldnt stop watching, and it criped me out, and that is the point. Noone can show depressing America like Korine.
Just because something doesn't make sense does not make it stupid or trivial, humans think that anything beyond their comprehension is not worth their time. I like this because it's on that line where you don't know if it's just plain insanity or if there was a plan behind it. People have such difficulty accepting anything that makes no sense, I think it's a good kind of different.
I thought this film was incredibly funny (I think people are expecting too much art and aren't taking the film for its "Tim & Eric" comedy styling) and yet out of all the laughs and intriguing scenes, there are also a few emotional and thought-provoking passages delivered.
However, some of the scenes (especially the annoying laughing from Korine's character, and a few mindless 'hurried' scenes near the end) water down the film's interest and cause annoyance down the road.
I normally like Harmony Korine's work, but this film is one of the worst pieces of crap I've ever seen. Anything novel about it was already done in Lars von trier's The Idiots, and the rest of it was just mindless drivel.
The coolest thing about this film is that it is not just pretentious hipster bullshit, it was shot entirely on VHS and edited, linearly, before being blown up for a theatrical release. In terms of experimental films, this is one of the best. Either you get it or you don't. No one is playing to be "hip" if they do, or a "loser" if they don't. So, just enjoy it or not, and move the fuck on if you don't. No one cares if you don't fit in. No one cares if you do.

I actually felt the fun behind the screen while they fell down. amazing. it was like the first time seeing a "tv" like when you are 2-3 days old baby and I cant remember - describe this feeling.

This movie is hillarious. It's like a fake doc with VERY black humour. My fav line was " get that trash pussehhhh" It's not for everyone and it's quite disturbing at times but all in all it's pretty funny.
@CommanderSpongebob to me, trash humpers is spiritually transcendental. what u r seeing are flashes of images from a brilliant sequence of pictures, coupled with some rather primitive sounds to suggest a feeling of base decay, or powerful emotions of isolation and corruption. see all of harmony korine's movies now to more fully understand.

Maybe you should watched with no audio at all and just use it as a visual background for an alternative sound of your choice. ok, if narrative cinema has dead then why should I consider to listen what the characters have to say?
You don't have to think narrative cinema is dead in order to enjoy stuff that's not primarily narrative. Also, I'd say audio is not inherently any more narrative than video. Sounds, music, even dialog can, of course, be used in ways unrelated to plot or exposition (e.g. to create atmosphere or convey something about a character that isn't intended to move a plot along.) I do like narrative film but I also like when sounds and visuals are freed up from having to be expositional.
I look forward to this movie. Whether it's art or not is beside the point. It's not as though those of us who admire Harmony Korine's movies are like "Well we anticipate that history will consider this art so we're betting on it." If it moves you it moves you. There are very few movies that have given me the sense that my mind has truly traveled somewhere during those two hours, and Gummo is one of them.
Harmony's new movie is going to be sick-it's about a washed up vert skater from the 80s who goes on a killing spree in texas-it's going to star vanilla ice.

Maybe you should watched with no audio at all and just use it as a visual background for an alternative sound of your choice. ok, if narrative cinema has dead then why should I consider to listen what the characters have to say?

You don't have to think narrative cinema is dead in order to enjoy stuff that's not primarily narrative. Also, I'd say audio is not inherently any more narrative than video. Sounds, music, even dialog can, of course, be used in ways unrelated to plot or exposition (e.g. to create atmosphere or convey something about a character that isn't intended to move a plot along.) I do like narrative film but I also like when sounds and visuals are freed up from having to be expositional.

I look forward to this movie. Whether it's art or not is beside the point. It's not as though those of us who admire Harmony Korine's movies are like "Well we anticipate that history will consider this art so we're betting on it." If it moves you it moves you. There are very few movies that have given me the sense that my mind has truly traveled somewhere during those two hours, and Gummo is one of them.

this looks like such a desperate move to shock and make an original film. Harmony was great in the turn of the century, now he's just a mediocre video artist like so many. Good things we still have wonderful contemporary directors like Brillante Mendoza or Pablo Stoll and so many more truly talented filmmakers

Harmony Korine is a hack and it's laughable to say he has any talent! He's a fraud. He claims to have studied all the great directors and comes out with crap. And it is crap. It's like defacating on a plate and calling it art. That is Harmony. This garbage looks no different than all his garbage. Don't fool yourself. This is not cinema. It's a punk kid from the Larry Clark crowd. The guy has no discernible skill. He just rolls a camera on slightly retarded people doing dumb things.

You're right, most people don't try hard enough. But I'm at least smart enough to see when someone's trying to be weird simply for the sake of being weird, and not trying to be interesting.
Go ahead and worship the guy if you want to, but as long as you defend him with such spittle-flecked declarations of what is Art and what isn't, you only make yourself look like even more of a fawning fanboy who can't think for himself.

I am sorry but harmony has made success and money and he just doesn t care anymore about what he should do as an artist. I saw old interviews and documentary where he talks about what filmaking is for him and I am very sorry to say that cause I admire him very much but I just think that he totally wanted just make us sick. and he succeeded
