I played this myself. Well, I played a little slower and maybe not as good as this man, but it was really not bad. Thats what teachers and the jury told me, they really liked it. A reporter said, this was not "real music", but just noise. I ask you: how can't this be real music?
I remember playing this piece - there are so many small details written in (sudden dynamics changes, accents, etc.) and you nailed them all. Very well done!!!
@hinataissohot I was talking about the mallets your using, not the marimba (I know that's a marimba.) What kind of mallets are you using? As in, your sticks?
I added a video response not for competition, but because your video clip of Ghanaia was the first one I saw when I searched it on YouTube. I was inspired to perform Ghanaia for my senior recital after viewing your performance. Thanks man! ..and maybe we can share our experiences learning the piece.
i have another opinion than klaaazz26. nice sound and good accents. but there are some mistakes^^. and i hate the mobile phone. thats bad for the player. but nice job!!
i don't like your volume differents, but technical you are top. maybe put some fermata into it, for example after you play the second time the c and g in the left hand and after the d# and c# in the left hand while you're playing the accents.
all in all at some points more rubato and not that fast
the part after the coda sign, but in the first round...(so you don't jump to he coda...)
there you must have a look, because it's different to the theme at the beginning of Ghanaia...in your right hand....there is three times the chord "D - F".....
Hello everyone...I go to Plymouth/Canton High School and I am a freshman... i am learning this piece and its going really good...but if you have any suggestions then please comment me!
I played that peice in college also! I really enjoyed how you interpreted the ending, definately wish i would have done that for concert. Your tempo was more fast than what i took it, but it helped express certain styles in the song. It appeared that you'd lost energy by the end of the peice, and your accuracy began to show that. Good job with those double notated 16th runs; that was always my weak part in the peice. Over all i found this performance to be rather enjoyable, again kudos!
not entirely true. theres a certain way to practice to gain chops. for performance situations like this(a recital). mallet choice is a key factor. you're not going to use a hard and heavy mallet when playing a choral and you're not going to use a soft rolling mallet when you're gunna play something more rhythmic like this piece.
heavier mallets will give you alot more strength (obviously) but heavy mallets also help with sound. Chorales actually sound very good with heavy mallets. Light mallets sometimes sound too dry or "dingy". It all depends on the piece...
what you say is true. but this piece is fast and rhythmic. if he used softer mallets, the sound would be muddled and you wouldn't get good definition of the minute note changes. medium to hard mallets are probably best, cause you get the note, the attack, and the rhythm.
softer and heavier are not the same thing. Best example I can think of are the Katarznya Mycka mallets by Marimba One. Really heavy sticks, but the harder sticks in the series are very articulate. They are great for a big sound and also, as suggested earlier, building muscle strength.
Great job Randolph. I have not played this piece yet. Looking forward to it. Great execution. Good luck in the future at everything else that you set for.
great job!!

@Sgtpeterenis People who can't step outside of the realm of easily comprehensible 4/4 music aren't worthy of your time. :)

Hey Randy, great performance!
I was just wondering, what mallets are using? Are those Good Vibes? It's tough to tell from the video quality.
jwallis0323 2 years ago
@jwallis0323 those arent vibes, thats a marimba
hinataissohot 1 year ago
@hinataissohot I think he is referring to the mallets and not the instrument.

I'm sorry, but I found a mistake...
the part after the coda sign, but in the first round...(so you don't jump to he coda...)
there you must have a look, because it's different to the theme at the beginning of Ghanaia...in your right hand....there is three times the chord "D - F".....
I hope you now what I mean...
But the rest is very well played!!!

there are no 16th notes in this piece. what are you talking about?
anotherguy242 3 years ago
Now, when you say senior recital...you mean senior in college recital???
MKfulcrum 3 years ago
must be... that's a really nice set of instruments.... doubt high school would have all that
anotherguy242 3 years ago
Not bad, BUT, I'm following along with the music, and yeah, you're definetly not playing the written part...nice try though.
jrivers52 3 years ago
yeah, i think he adapted it a bit, which is perfectly fine. but, maybe there should be a note of it somewhere, that it's not the piece as written
anotherguy242 3 years ago
if you want to develop some real chops use heavier mallets
