  • This guy is awful

  • he looks nervous.

  • I think the best part was at 1:17

  • An epic fail at a "Beginner'' video

  • Dude, your bassline simply doubles the guitar in many places. The bassline has to lock in with what the drummer is doing, otherwise the groove totoally drops out of the song. I see no mention in any of your videos about working with the drummer.

  • @dharmaseed

I don't think he considered working with a drummer at all :D

    These vids are so dreadful.

"You can play any note within the scale when that chord is being played"... as someone preparing for studying jazz this sentence hurts my ears.

  • @bassmajor No doubt, bass is supposed to be the melodic and harmonic backbone of the band. A bass player has to think roots and harmonics, not free jazz improvisation, except in extreme cases.

  • this is for intermediate bass players silly! This helped a lot! Thanks Dalton!

  • I never thought i would sink so low as to watch expert village. Agreed, I also understand what he means, but then he's says something like: "yeah so uh do this, and uh find the e note, and uh play a scale, and yeah so do that".

  • @MisterModder123 Obviously you don't know many musicians, because most musicians who aren't classically trained with a whip know the technique in their head but might be a little slow in referencing if it has been years since music lessons like me. Happens to me all the time if I'm trying to teach someone or if I'm nervous. You're just like everyone else on youtube who trys to downgrade others to make themselves feel better, this is a good video for beginners

  • @mso872 Yeah i know, Im just saying he could have explained stuff more... that was all...

  • i want to no where he buys his drugs and what drugs they are

  • He mess's with his nose a lot

  • I'm an intermediate bassist, and this left me blank

  • I know the guy means well, but his lessons arn't very good. I know what he is talking about, because I've been playing for many years. If I were a beginner to come across this video, I would have been like "what the hell?"

It also boggles my mind that he is a bass 'expert' from 'expert village', and he doesn't even mention the fact that playing in time is the most important thing. He should have at least played this riff with a drum machine or metronome to give beginners the right idea.

  • wow, this guy suck monkey fuck!

    lol

  • Dude, where's your sense of groove? A bassplayer is responsible for laying down the bottom end and solidifying the grrove between the drums and guitars.

  • Does this guy honestly think that basslines are built based on the SCALE corresponding to each chord? Seriously? They're built based on the CHORD TONES. You can't just "use any note" in the F minor scale over an F minor chord if the key is E major. Also, why does he slide up to every note all the time? It's annoying.

  • sometimes, people who can play think they can teach others

there is a difference between playing and teaching

  • this guy doesnt deserve to be called a bass player!

  • Just buy the album ''Kind Of Blue''.

And leave the village of so-called experts.

  • "expertvillage"

  • just a correction,, when improvising over a chord progression.. you should use ur modes.. example:

    for the e major - e ionian

    for the F# minor - F# dorian

beginners sometimes get confused bec. of this.. i recommend to study about the modal system first.. if u want to improvise

    tnx.

  • I like this video when I was first starting bass. However, I already had a theory background and had a year of self-taught guitar behind me, so I understood what he was saying. I don't think this qualifies as a true beginners lesson unless there is some kind of chronological order to his tutorials. If show, perhaps this demands some links?

  • i didnt learn anything:P hahaha

he can play but he cant teach!!

  • he can play but he cant teach.

  • I wish I could play the bass, it's badass!

  • why don't you learn it?

  • I don't have a bass.

  • save up and buy one

  • this guy does bass lines for porn movies

  • lol wtf, im just poking around different bass vids, and this is dreadful

dude u cant expect begginers to learn like this, you need to show it to them, give them a way to learn it. jeez :P

  • i fuckin hate expert village videos

theyre never helpfull and dont go into any sort of detail

  • gotta agree with you there bud.

  • i never liked these videos, music comes from the heart, not from knowledge.

  • are you retarded. of course its different dumbass

  • is bass guitar different then other guitars ?

  • are you kiddin me they are completely different instruments

  • isn;t the E betveen the 2 dots o_O ?

  • an E can be anywere it is all depending on how your tuned for exanple i play 6 string droped down a step so it is tuned a,d,g,c,f,a#

  • LOL no dude, E is the 7th fret (the dot), standard tuning.

  • damn.. my bad xD

  • these comments against expertvillage crack me up! LOL not just on this video, but ALL of them.

i like how this dude shows you how to do it in high speed. "you just do it like this...buh buh BUH BUH bum buh BUM BUH BUMBUMBUMBUH" what we dont see is the doggie treat he catches in his mouth.

  • Wouldn't it be easier to start on something that doesn't change key?

  • Hmm i need to write basslines without knowing how to play bass!

    Any ideas?

  • this lesson sucks. It's useless

  • thats pretty good,

i play guitar though but my bassist could realy use this, he has no idea about any kind of the "theory" and when i tell him to write a line he just messes around till he finds the right note.

normally the same one im playing, same octave and all, if im playing low on the fretboard.

    great vid!!

  • i agree...u do suck so y dont u take lessons instead of giving them

  • quite ironically, you need lessons in learning how to type. He is good, and I bet you don't even play the guitar. Listen, if you don't like there work, don't watch it.

  • ive been playing bass for 5 years and last night my band mates and i opened for blue oyster cult and april wine...so i would say im doin ok...

  • How did you open up for them?

    sorry for the insult.

  • wow, you pretty much suck, sorry.

  • helpful

  • Was this supposed to be helpful?

  • wtf? this didnt explain anything!

way to waste my time, asshole!

and yeah, id like a book to learn the notes and scales and stuff too...any ideas?

  • bass guitar: total scales and techniques and applications is the one i use. it does have all the scales and some techniques u can use in there.

  • It could have explained better, but it gave you the basics you should understand of scales. Hal-Leonard has a good book that will take you through everything from basic finger position to scales, chords and arpeggios. I suggest that.

  • ur kinda a dumb ass, u wanna write a bass line, u figure out the scale, once u do that, u can play any note in the scale in any pattern as long as its in the same time figure as guitar, then it sounds good. pretty much u figure it out...

  • im kinda new to bass so u guys are gonna laugh at me but can u make any kind of pattern for lets say an a sharp scale

  • nvm xD

  • Would someone please recommend to me a book so I can learn what notes are in different scales?

  • lol all of the -6 votes below spell 666 XD

  • great playing even! lol

  • dreat playing :D

  • dude, he's good. you haven't seen all of this guy's videos. this is just a tutorial to show noobs how to play.

  • Writing a bass line isn't that hard... I always just improvise a riff and work off of that.

Writing good music on a Synth, however, is almost impossible.

  • he's a good bass play go watch the popping and slapping video he plays higher ground at the end and if you guys are so bad ass how about you film your self and make videos like this.k?

  • The higher ground bassline isn't too tough, just practice it. He doesn't play it with the right feeling anyway, he rushes the phrasing.

I wouldn't take too much heed in these lessons. They are not explained well and he really doesn't have a good enough grasp of these playing principals to be teaching them.

    Learn by listening to records.

  • ya, im gonna agree. this line seemed too punk

  • Maybe it sounds too punk from your perspective if that's not the style of music you wanna play (although it sounded more ska - pop-punk at best) but some people out there will love this style

  • uh you spelled bass wrong

  • i watched this twice and didnt notise it

  • actually off lessons hes a pretty good bass player =]

  • ok, firstly thanks for the vid, now that i've seen it i now know how far i have before i start playing anything good because rightnow i suck lol.

  • thanks man, youve helped me out heeps.

  • It's a video for BEGINNERS you retards. Of course he's playing simple stuff. Jesus Christ.

  • thats such a crap video lol i like the comment off Mike709 tho lmao

  • lol....i feel sorry for anyone who actually "learned" off this dude....

  • i learned.... i can now make poppy slappy noises! woohoo lol

  • Haha gay is right! WTF was up with that bass line at the end, has he ever heard of rhythm! Ba ba bum bum beep beep ba boo CRAPPPPPPP!!!!! When does everyone who sucks get their royalty checks for that bassline that he ripped off of them? Oh btw, kids with mental disabilities called, they want their bassline back!

I loved that minor scale btw, ALLLLLLL the notes in it, what was there like 5? yep, that about covers it.

If it's not Barouqe, don't F it up!!!!!

  • a bass line has can be anything. just because it not to your taste doens't make it any less of a bassline.

btw yeh this is for newbies but then again its not that well explained. he showed us a scale and what tune we could get from it. he never realy showed much behind it

  • Haha, gayyy

  • gee, thanks for the free lesson. its very helpful.

  • I have written over 10,000 bassline because of this wonderful lesson! Thank you expertvillage! (now, where’s my g*dd*mn money!)

  • i dont get the minor part what the heck is that?

  • Thats great thanks for the helpful stuff Ive been watching your videos and It has been helping me because I just started playing the bass
