Dude, your bassline simply doubles the guitar in many places. The bassline has to lock in with what the drummer is doing, otherwise the groove totoally drops out of the song. I see no mention in any of your videos about working with the drummer.
@bassmajor No doubt, bass is supposed to be the melodic and harmonic backbone of the band. A bass player has to think roots and harmonics, not free jazz improvisation, except in extreme cases.
I never thought i would sink so low as to watch expert village. Agreed, I also understand what he means, but then he's says something like: "yeah so uh do this, and uh find the e note, and uh play a scale, and yeah so do that".
@MisterModder123 Obviously you don't know many musicians, because most musicians who aren't classically trained with a whip know the technique in their head but might be a little slow in referencing if it has been years since music lessons like me. Happens to me all the time if I'm trying to teach someone or if I'm nervous. You're just like everyone else on youtube who trys to downgrade others to make themselves feel better, this is a good video for beginners
I know the guy means well, but his lessons arn't very good. I know what he is talking about, because I've been playing for many years. If I were a beginner to come across this video, I would have been like "what the hell?"
It also boggles my mind that he is a bass 'expert' from 'expert village', and he doesn't even mention the fact that playing in time is the most important thing. He should have at least played this riff with a drum machine or metronome to give beginners the right idea.
Dude, where's your sense of groove? A bassplayer is responsible for laying down the bottom end and solidifying the grrove between the drums and guitars.
Does this guy honestly think that basslines are built based on the SCALE corresponding to each chord? Seriously? They're built based on the CHORD TONES. You can't just "use any note" in the F minor scale over an F minor chord if the key is E major. Also, why does he slide up to every note all the time? It's annoying.
I like this video when I was first starting bass. However, I already had a theory background and had a year of self-taught guitar behind me, so I understood what he was saying. I don't think this qualifies as a true beginners lesson unless there is some kind of chronological order to his tutorials. If show, perhaps this demands some links?
these comments against expertvillage crack me up! LOL not just on this video, but ALL of them.
i like how this dude shows you how to do it in high speed. "you just do it like this...buh buh BUH BUH bum buh BUM BUH BUMBUMBUMBUH" what we dont see is the doggie treat he catches in his mouth.
i play guitar though but my bassist could realy use this, he has no idea about any kind of the "theory" and when i tell him to write a line he just messes around till he finds the right note.
normally the same one im playing, same octave and all, if im playing low on the fretboard.
quite ironically, you need lessons in learning how to type. He is good, and I bet you don't even play the guitar. Listen, if you don't like there work, don't watch it.
It could have explained better, but it gave you the basics you should understand of scales. Hal-Leonard has a good book that will take you through everything from basic finger position to scales, chords and arpeggios. I suggest that.
ur kinda a dumb ass, u wanna write a bass line, u figure out the scale, once u do that, u can play any note in the scale in any pattern as long as its in the same time figure as guitar, then it sounds good. pretty much u figure it out...
he's a good bass play go watch the popping and slapping video he plays higher ground at the end and if you guys are so bad ass how about you film your self and make videos like this.k?
The higher ground bassline isn't too tough, just practice it. He doesn't play it with the right feeling anyway, he rushes the phrasing.
I wouldn't take too much heed in these lessons. They are not explained well and he really doesn't have a good enough grasp of these playing principals to be teaching them.
Maybe it sounds too punk from your perspective if that's not the style of music you wanna play (although it sounded more ska - pop-punk at best) but some people out there will love this style
Haha gay is right! WTF was up with that bass line at the end, has he ever heard of rhythm! Ba ba bum bum beep beep ba boo CRAPPPPPPP!!!!! When does everyone who sucks get their royalty checks for that bassline that he ripped off of them? Oh btw, kids with mental disabilities called, they want their bassline back!
I loved that minor scale btw, ALLLLLLL the notes in it, what was there like 5? yep, that about covers it.
a bass line has can be anything. just because it not to your taste doens't make it any less of a bassline.
btw yeh this is for newbies but then again its not that well explained. he showed us a scale and what tune we could get from it. he never realy showed much behind it
This guy is awful

I don't think he considered working with a drummer at all :D
These vids are so dreadful.
"You can play any note within the scale when that chord is being played"... as someone preparing for studying jazz this sentence hurts my ears.

just a correction,, when improvising over a chord progression.. you should use ur modes.. example:
for the e major - e ionian
for the F# minor - F# dorian
beginners sometimes get confused bec. of this.. i recommend to study about the modal system first.. if u want to improvise
tnx.

Writing a bass line isn't that hard... I always just improvise a riff and work off of that.
Writing good music on a Synth, however, is almost impossible.
