  • Your Grinding wheels need to be balanced. The excessive vibration can be fixed.

  • What grit are the stones?

Do you use a leather honing wheel or strap?

Great video, I always thought that sharpening turning tools was difficult and complicated but you proved me wrong. I am not new to woodworking, but am to woodturning.

  • @adjhfadjf The stone grits are 80 and 120. No, I do not use a strap or honing wheel.

  • I have watched almost all your videos and really enjoy them! I'm am relatively new to all this and seem to have he most difficulty understanding at what angles to sharpen each tool...It seems everyone has a different opinion and everyone reverts to "whatever works best for you" If you can provide any insight to what angles you use on your tools it would be very helpful!

Also, I have the same grinder as you do. I believe the wheels are 80/120. How do you decide which side to use?

  • This is good stuff!

  • if you want your stone to last for a long time. Use all the surface of the stone! That's good stuff, I never use those jigs. I like the Japanese water stone, it's a bit longer, but the blade doesn't heat up so it's stay sharp longer. Of course using the proper angle on the blade for the proper type of wood helps too.

  • After reviewing the Pdf i found on Woodworkerscatalog about the Ellsworth if you use the Wolvering jig you

extend the tool out 2 1/8"

distance from front of the wheel is 7 1/8"

distance from center of the wheel going down towards the table is set to 5 1/4"

the leg on the Ellsworth grinding jig is set to 45 degrees that sits in the pocket

  • where do you get your tools

  • Most of them from "Woodcraft"

  • NOTE: that is

2" Extended in front of the JIG if you are using a 8" Grinder and

2 3/8" Extended in front of the JIG if you are using a 6" grinder

  • It seems a bit wobbly ?

  • nice vid do you think its ok if i use a grey stone as a temporary fix until i get a white stone?

  • If it's all you have but it's going to make the edge a little rough.

  • Thanks, I'm enjoying your videos. This is the first one I've seen with opening theme music.

  • Thanks for the great video Carl, excellent as always. I do have one question and that is about sharpening the parting, scrapers and skew tools. I’ve seen where some turners lay their tools flat on the flat resting surface. Just wondering if you’ve seen the tools mentioned sharpened this way? I’ve just changed my sharpening to this new way (new for me) it seems to take the curve out of the tool that you end up getting after a while (the tool following the curve of the stone).

    Thanks again!

  • I haven't is there a video online I would like to see it.

    Thanks,

    Carl

  • Good video and it covers all of the basics. Plus, all of your tools are now sharp and ready to go!! One question which confuses me is: " Do you remove the burr edge or keep the burr. If you remove the burr, how do you remove it and still keep a razer sharp edge?? Thanks

  • Hi Ted,

I just hit it with a piece of sand paper.

    Thanks,

    Carl
