I just love this song. With this one, and Good Year for The Roses, and Everyday I Write the Book, he really proved he can write--and just as important, memorably deliver--songs that will be called "standards" for decades to come.
Of course with most things beauty, particularly in art, is in the eye of the beholder. Having said that I must say that Costello as a lyricist is undervalued-- he ranks alongside Joni Mitchell/Paul Simon/Dylan/ect., as one of the top 10. This tune captures the melancholy, madness and love relatiionships are made of. "You were the Spice of Life, the Gin in my Vermouth/And though the sparks would fly, I thought our love was fireproof.." What a sparkling Gem!
@MrWallygator2 Costello vociferates the emotions roused by rejection better than most. Take "I want you" as a case in point. His ability to stand in the eye of the tornado and feel the wind is without peer!
I heard this song and was just digging the normal Costello groove until it get's to the chorus and I understood what he meant by the song title. It brings a vivid series of images to mind that almost make me want to cry.
probably my favourite costello song ! "Though the sparks would fly i thought our love was fireproof" its slightly creepy but not as bad as "I want you" . A very very beautiful song that i never tire of hearing
This artist has everything - a beautiful voice, lyric originality, musical gift for writing a lovely melody.

Tremendous song, on the compilation I have this follows The Poisoned Rose, and then itself is followed by I want You & Olivers Army. Fantastic!
He is somebody Im new to actually listening to, somebody I look forward to really discovering if those four songs are out for anything! :)
