Lets make a distinction here, there is the "Occult" and a "cult". The Occult is a huge matrix of teachings that have been hidden from the masses, and are used to raise the individual not enslave them. A Cult is a group of people lead by a leader, where the members are exploited for the most part.

In March 1997, Marshal Applewhite covinced everyone that he was the divine messiah, Jesus Christ. He told everyone that God would destroy the world and a ufo would rescue them. But the real fact is, Applewhite's followers commited suicide. So Marshal Applewhite wasn't really a divine messiah, he was false messiah. Now he's dead.
