hey can u give any tips about overclocking a quad core q8300 2.5ghz? i overclockd it d last time when i realized my thermal compund got dissipated.so the fsb multipliers came back to stock values.so if i put back a proper thermal compound, will i be able to overclock it better?
@Syatek2020 is not smart because when you overclocked your cpu gets hotter and on a desktop you switch the stock heatsink but in a laptop you dont meaning your cpu will probably overheat.
@Syatek2020 in my experience is impossible to overclocked a laptop since this option is lock on the bios. the cpu is optimized to run at its best under such a cluster environment. there are software that will overclocked the cpu but you will end up causing hardware damage.
@yuniorp8 if i were u i would built a pc and play around with overclocking the cpu and gpu which is what im doing myself. im trying to learn these techniques so i can build a more expensive rig to play new upcoming games and for video editing
@brunthroath6912 Yes that's what happened it did crash on Win 7 after all. I use Win Xp for multiple reasons. Old programs and clients who have never been updated for Win 7, the sound quality is actually better on Xp with my Audigy 2 platinum Soundcard, my Guitar Rig 3 program doesn't have problems with playing music and guitar sound at same time unlike Win 7 who only lets me play the guitar and not even play a song trough Winamp.. Dude i could spend the night telling you why i use Win Xp.
@sciguy14 I have a laptop so i just want to mess with my old azz p4 from like 5 years ago. I looked up and found SetFSB to be quite reliable. Thanks for the reply anyway
too bad I didn't see this video before starting overclocking. I used some other guides, and a lot of the techniques you describe I was following anyway, but this is a well organized video, and you clearly know what you are talking about.
is it impossible to set my voltage when its been locked by the mobo i cant see any voltage settings :( so i cant OC past 3.6 ghz it just throws a bsod
@sciguy14 sry for the late response but i had it running at 3,2GHz at stock cooling system with a loading temp of ~65 Celsius quiet high. and then later I've crashed my motherboard for some reason but not due the overclocking.. so now i'm saving up to buy a new PC :( thanks for tips anyway
hey man pretty good vid. I would suggest next time adding some info about warranty voiding for noobs. flashing a bios on vid card is a sure fire way to screw it up like you warned but it also voids the warranty... most overclocking voids warranties matter o fact lol. dunno if anyone else has mentioned that. I burnt an athlon xp 2500+ out once OCing on stock cooler haha.
Hi, I have seeing all your videos, but in this "overclocking guide" the only thing that I can't find is - How do we know when the CPU and GPU are bottleneck, I mean using some software like 3D Mark06 and comparing the number of each, but you say if the number of one increases related with the other, then there is a bottleneck, but before overclocking, in which aspect we must look using 3D Mark , for example the number of the result of CPU and GPU must be equal or what ratio are?
I think GPU overclocking is allmost uneffective, because they depend a lot on the arcitecture so the gain of speed wont be significant and there is a lot of risk involved, cards from some manufacturers burn even w/o OC so it's not practical unless you wan't to bench out and have the fastest 5970 for a day or two :D
But CPU OC is quite conviniant-i aprove of that :)
I got this problem with my pc that it did run with 2.10 Ghz before and now it went down to 1.10 after I did get my sound driver on to my PC can't it rly make my Ghz go down instaling that ?? and my power suply in the back the fan on there dont go anymore can that be the problem I use another way to keep my pc cold :) if you can help me please leav a comment in my profile and sorry for my bad english
@Mnemic1990 if your psu isnt as good as it was before you should probably get a new one... it probably means that your psu is overstressed, thats what i think anyways
I know how to overclock but what concerns me is the voltage changing. People say "If you set the wrong voltage you will fry your cpu" So what is exactly a good voltage increase? Like if its unstable ill change it from eg. 1.280 to 1.290 volts?
i'm a slightly tech savvy person (i'm sure i'll get flamed on here for saying this) that can do simple upgrades of most pc parts but I didn't build from scratch b/c i didn't really have a nuts-and-bolts knowledge and couldn't really find an up-to-date resource. I think your videos are going to go a long way in getting there. thanks man - these are very solid.
Hi. I just started overclocking my i7 920 with asrock extreme. When I set my configurations to manual to allow me to change the speed, and I reboot my computer, it fully shutsdown for like 2-3seconds, then boots up. Is this normal?
some setting changes require that the system completely power down for them to take effect. I've done very little i7 overclocking at work, but the ASUS P6T did shutdown for a couple seconds if I recall correctly.
I have 4gb ddr3 ram, 1gb gtx 260, core i7 720qm, what do you reckon the main bottle neck would be the processor or is it capable of handling those components?
i wouldnt use software. bios is the best way to get a solid and safe overclock. mainly cause if u use something like nvidias oc tools u can end up saving a profile on boot up that is not stable and will require u to have to go into safe mode. idk bout other softwares but if anything DONT use nvidias oc tools. bios is the best route for overclocking.
great vid brother i got a ? i have a q9400 cooled by a coolermasterv8 right now my temps are 38,30,36,30 i can run prime 95 all day and never get core0 to change from 38 i even overclocked it to over 3.0ghz and the temps stay the same.could i have bad temp sensors and does it really matter
well core temp sppedfan realtemp all say the same 38,30,36,30 idle now i can run prime95 all day and coreo stays at 38 the other cores will jump some weierd thing is if i run intel burn test i can get core o to jump to 42 and the other3 cores will get to a max of around 44c i guess all that matters is my pc isnt shutting down the ? is if a sensor is stuck lets say on 38c and it did ever reach tjuntion would it be able to comunicate corectly to the mobo to shutdown what do ya think?
how do i access that sensor what is it called and what software would you recomend for an accurate reading of that sensor sorry for the loaded ? but your help is much appreciated
yea ive deone that but what good does that really do as you cant put a load on your cpu and be in the bios at the same timeat least not that i know off
What brand is your computer? The BIOS may not be totally locked, and you may be able to load a new version based on the model. There are a ton of in-OS overclocking tools. just google it.
hey sciguy14 so you mean that the true speed of cpu overclocking is when you also overclock your graphics card?
i overclock my sempron-le 1200 from 2.1 to 2.9 and runs at load@ 39c i have no problem but does it mean that i also need to overclock my video to match the speed of the cpu to avoid bottleneck?
As a former electronics engineer I would like to add that there is a lot of stuff going on with regard to the bus and various different ICs built into your PC that you are not aware of. When you run at speeds that the herdware is not designed for you risk causing all kinds of data bus errors and other glitches that you'll never be aware of unless you have a CPU emulator and other tools used in hardware design and debugging work. You just never know what problems your causing on a minute level.
im running 4.7Ghz with my i7 950, have been for days.. my system hasent been turned off since i installed the CPU, im yet to run into problems.
Who the hell cares, they're clearly so minor that theres no point in worrying, besides.. they're computer components, they will eventualy malfunction. Why not have some fun and lower the component life span by a few months?
its interesting how companies advertise over clocking ready products. But they don't tell you that it voids your warranty (unless you read the fine print) i always wondered if theres any way they can tell that you over clocked the CPU if you had to send it back to them...
I'm really glad you put together this video. I personally think that overclocking is a bad idea because your risking damaging your hardware for in most cases a 20% to 30% increase in performance at best. I think it is always better not to be cheap and buy faster hardware so you can run it at stock speeds. I always force all hardware to run at maximum design specs with fans at 100%, etc. That being said, glad you wrote this because, as an IT manager, I've seen lots of people burn up their PC.
also, i'm not sure if he said this..., if a cpu isnt stable at a desired freq, its probably not going to stay there because the cpu was not marketed to overclock to 3.0, but it is stable @ 2.8 (from 2.5 stock). I learned that the hard way and i'm sure with a few more tries, i would have fucked up my 9850. i'm moving on to a AMD 940 in a couple months so for now, this 9850 works just fine.
Good vid! Ok I have a AMD 3.2 am2+ dualcore. I can not get pass 3.6 ghz without blue screen thats with voltage increase. What am I doing wrong? My other specs are as follows. OCZ reaper 1060 ram @2.3 v.. GTX 295.. Corsair 1000 watt psu asus crosshair II mobo.. any help would be greatly thankfull... by the that with HT link @ x4 and x3.. ram is underclocked to 800 mhz not xceed the 1060 to much..
or should i just go black edition quad core the highest i found one for is 3.0 I here the black edtions overclock smoother.. Ok and lets get this stright so intel fanboys can understand why some go AMD as its takes and intel 2.8 to 3.2 to run lets say crysis warhead it only takes an AMD a 2800+ to a 3200+ to run crysis war head.. look at the specs on the game.. that shows it takes AMD less ghz to run that game than an INTEL... whats that mean? Thats why I use AMD...
Are you crazy..I admit thier I7 is smokin fast.. But I just bought a phenom 955.. overclocked to 3.6 ghz no problems.. but lets look at this lets a take a game here crysis warhead it takes a 2.8 ghz or faster to run it..3.2 for vista... amd 2800 + is only 2ghz.. your crazy.. intel is good but amd is made for gaming.. sorry my opinion..
you can't compare intel and AMD GHz speeds directly, as they translate into different performance level on each platform. It's like comparing apples to oranges. You might simply not be able to go any higher. If the highest you've seen is 3.8, and you got to 3.6, that's pretty close. A black edition would probably go a bit further.
Excellent video! 5/5 I only wish you made this video sooner...I had to find all this info on my own (w/ Google, lol) back when I was OC-ing my XPS-630i, hopefully this will help a lot of people who are just starting out.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
ok so you think i am because you think i probably comment on every video saying FIRST? next time come up with something better if you can. that is so fucking stupid you are such a retard

or should i just go black edition quad core the highest i found one for is 3.0 I here the black edtions overclock smoother.. Thats why I use AMD...
zentetsu32 2 years ago
AMD have lower GHz than Intel and they rate it e.g. 2800+ which means it is equivalent to a 2.8 Ghz Intel processor.
No matter what you think, Intel still has better performance.

Then why does Intel own the market ? :p
Why do i7's top the benchmark scores?
PCWizKid got an Phenom II too for review and he already mentioned it won't beat the Core i7...

I think your cpu is bottlenecking your system, GTX 295 with that cpu?!?

you can't compare intel and AMD GHz speeds directly, as they translate into different performance level on each platform. It's like comparing apples to oranges. You might simply not be able to go any higher. If the highest you've seen is 3.8, and you got to 3.6, that's pretty close. A black edition would probably go a bit further.

I wish I could push my core voltage so I can get my 5000+ to 3.2, but my mobo is a cheap piece of crap and doesn't have those options :P

Is Orthos as good/reliable as prime95?
TheFusionIcon 2 years ago
Yes, there are plenty of good programs for stress testing
sciguy14 2 years ago
Thanks! (I've never used anything besides Orthos.)

Excellent video! 5/5 I only wish you made this video sooner...I had to find all this info on my own (w/ Google, lol) back when I was OC-ing my XPS-630i, hopefully this will help a lot of people who are just starting out.

I'd be happy to listen to suggestions if you have some. Maybe I should randomly dance for 10 seconds in the middle of the video...
