  • I think I watched this entire lineup.

  • isn't it better to watch these cartoons - y'know - any time you want? Without commercials? Like today?

  • Saturday ROCKS on CBS! 1988-89 Season

Starting with The Adventures of Raggedy Ann & Andy, Superman, an hour of Muppet Babies, Pee-Wee's Playhouse, Garfield and Friends, Hey Vern, It's Ernest!, Flip(Teen Wolf replaces the show 4 weeks later), The New Adventures of Mighty Mouse & ending with the CBS Storybreak.

  • @UrkManRocks Allthough the bumpers for this era I tag "What A Party 2.0." The 1984-85 season used the Superstar Bumpers while using a Amusment Park theme for the promos (Saturday's The Place).

  • 1988 was CBS' best year yet for Saturday Morning, with the strong lineup with returning favorites Muppet Babies and Pee Wee's Playhouse, the premiere of Garfield & Friends, the short lived but amazing Hey Vern It's Ernest, and much more. CBS did ROCK in '88.

  • the song says video killed the radio star. well unfortuntaly, cable killed saturday mornings.

  • I remember watching these shows when I was 3! I am so glad I was a CBS baby-good times.

  • Saturday ROCKS on CBS and I was talking about it the whole time when I was in 2nd Grade, but also, The Girls Rocked, but I was sad when they changed Saturday ROCKS to CBS FUN, but @ least they were still worth remembering.

  • Premiered the day I was born! September 17, 1988 ! my big brother (then 5) watched the premiere while my mom gave birth to me in the hospital that morning.

  • Did anyone find Ernest funny? ANYONE?!?!

  • @robbchr I did! Well when he went to camp and jail and was scared stupid. The TV show was horrible IMO.

  • @robbchr i did....you know what i mean, vern?

  • @robbchr I did

  • @robbchr I am gonna step up and say I did. I loved Hey Vern It's Ernest, and the complete series is now available on DVD from Mill Creek Entertainment.

  • WBNS in Columbus Ohio always teased us with the cartoons. They would always start the lineup with Muppet Babies at 900, then end abruptly at 1130. We never got to see the new shows in those late and early timeslots. That frustrated me for years. During the 90s, they stopped showing the whole lineup altogether until Beakman at noon.

  • My god, I remember this exact commercial. Time went by fast!

  • Thank you with a Big Saturday Morning SMILE :)

  • OMG

  • he-man(my fav 80's toon even tho it wasnt sat morning), and the smurfs. i'll never let go of those times. my golden era.

  • i tell my lil brother all the time that the best time to be a kid was in the 80's on saturday mornings. it was like heaven on earth.it was a dreamland. a beautiful movie with a happy ending always. i long for those days. i dont just mean saturday mornings but the 80's period. u could sit in front of the tv all morning long. now its boring and not like that at all. these memories will forever be with me. garfield, muppet babies, pee wee's playhouse, mighty mouse, teen wolf, ninja turtles, wwf

  • You can definitely tell that this is prior to the season's starting, because "Flip" didn't last very long at all, before being cancelled and replaced by Teen Wolf.

  • Hey Dirtfire the topic here is saturday mornings. Your right those were the best cartoons but all those shows u said were after school week day shows

  • All Aboard my time machine!! next stop a sunny saturday morning at our grandparents house watching cartoons and then tradin puffy stickers for our sticker albums and we will throw up all the lucky charms on the red sit and spin!!!!!!!!!!!!! It fits ten...whos in!!!!?

  • Somebody tried to tell me a few years ago how lucky kids are today. Stuff like this is just another example of why I laughed in his face. Kids born after the mid-80s will never realize what they missed & won't ever feel the way we do about our childhood. It really is sad.

  • 80's,90's and early 2000's Cartoons Rox. Now shows today sux ass. except Nicktoons. they have some good Cartoons also Disney XD

  • Those are the only two places that actually show cartoons thanks alot CBS NBC ABC CW and Fox thanks to you all Saturday mornings are now are News programs yeah some cartoons most suck! Gimme the 70's through early 90's cartoons on Saturday morning and the cartoons that stations in Chicago like WGN WFLD and later on WPWR and WGBO were showing!

  • I miss waking up early to watch cartoons on Saturday. And the cartoons after school...well only if I finished my homework. :) I don't think kids have that anymore.

  • i was 8 then

  • Unfortunately today,"SATURDAY SUCKS ON CBS!" Cute girls on the promo, though.

  • @chipdrusano lol totally agree.

  • Oh,its from cbs so no wonder why there's

no the smurfs in the line up.

  • Because the Smurfs was NBC:)

  • I really enjoy Pee-wee's Playhouse.

  • Wow, I remember this!

  • CBS was the network to turn to on Saturday mornings, and 1988 was their best year, with a kickass image campaign in Saturday ROCKS, and the best shows like Muppet Babies, Garfield, Pee-Wee and ERNEST! I miss them all!!!

  • No argument there, afternoon syndicated fare was ALL good in the 1980s, all those shows and more! I was just saying from a Saturday Morning perspective CBS could not be beat... except perhaps by those fine examples on weekday afternoons!

  • @Dirtfire You are so right!

  • @Dirtfire yeah thunnder cats and Transformers where the shit.

  • @Dirtfire at the same time, Garfield and Friends premiered in 1988, and that became the main reason I'd turn on to CBS on saturday morning

  • hahahahahha man i missed these cartoons ^^ along with alot more, eek the car mr bogus tiger sharks visionaries, are these sunday cartoons? lol well, SO GOOD to have people like u to upload these classic cartoons ;)

  • Bill and Ted. Lol. Hell i wanted to wonder why in hell PeeWee's Playhouse was lined up on a Saturday cartoon lineup.

  • Man, that was definitely a fun era for Saturday morning cartoons.

  • Comment removed

  • that was in 86

  • PastorKaler, you're right about the date. This is indeed the CBS lineup for Fall 1988. I know this because I distinctly remember the debut of the Superman cartoon, which coincided with Superman's 50th anniversary that year. I believe it only lasted that one season.

I only saw one episode that year, but I believe that entire series is now available on DVD. Great find, thanks!

  • And this was two years after Superfriends was canceled. BTW Superboy came out the same year.

  • I remember these Saturday Morning CBS commercials.

One CBS Saturday Rock commercial line-up I remember, that I had on video tape once, was The Muppet Babies, Pee-Wee's Playhouse, Garfield & Friends, Hey Vern It's Ernest, Teen Wolf, Mighty Mouse, and CBS Storybreak.

The only two shows that are on DVD are only both Pee-Wee's Playhouse and Garfield & Friends. There's no Mighty Mouse, Muppet Babies, Hey Vern It's Ernest, Teen Wolf, or any of the other 80s CBS Saturday morning shows on DVD.

  • I always wondered why CBS started their new cartoon lineup one week after ABC and NBC

  • Saturday doesn't rock anymore..the good old days of Sat. morning shows are gone.

  • Totally agree Mooky. Today, all the cartoons are spin offs of recent movies, or kids card games. Cartoons today are an arm of the merchandise marketing machine, original ideas are too risky. I miss the 80's.

  • in the 80s and early 90s some of the cartoons were spin-off of movies too..

    e.g. Ghostbusters, Teen Wolf, BTTF

  • also Bill and Ted, Karate Kid

  • Let's not forget Beetlejuice, Back to the Future.

  • i already said Back to the Future (BTTF)

  • Didn't see the initials

  • Hey, this was my thing during the '88-'89 Season, I mean, forget about abc and NBC, Saturday ROCKS were THE best during the 88-89 Season, of course, during that season, I was still watching NBC Saturday Nights Golden Girls, 227, Amen, Empty Nest and HUNTER and of course, Ray Combs took over as host of Family Feud, Soul Train was still on syn. CLUB MTV was still on MTV and Casey Kasem was still hosting America's Top 10 on syn. and The Cosby Show was still #1 on Primetime Television God Bless CBS.

  • well CBS gets kudos for the 1988-89 season since that was the season when Garfield and Friends premiered...and gave me a new reason to turn on to CBS on Saturday morning

  • Agreed.... CBS' Saturday mornings were unstoppable in the 1980s.... and I feel 1988 was their best year with that solid lineup they had..... loved Pee-Wee and Garfield and ERNEST!!!!! Loved this Saturday ROCKS promo as well!

  • @PastorKaler I adore the 80s, and loved growing up in that time. But though I'll agree that 80s cartoons were cooler, they were still huge commercials/movie spinoffs. Transformers, GI Joe, My Little Pony, Rainbow Brite, He-Man, Jem...it's a long list. As for the movie spinoffs...The Real Ghostbusters, Muppet Babies, Back to the Future, Teen Wolf, Star Wars (Ewoks and Droids)...Not trying to diss, but in certain terms very litte has changed. Still, the 80s rocked!

  • @PastorKaler me too, the 80s are extremely epicness

@mooky9669: i agree with you as well bro, the saturday mornings that we once knew are gone but it'll never be forgotten, the saturday mornings of today sucks like a pile of dogcrap haha

  • @mooky9669 yeah where for art thou, saturday norning?
