If I knew then, what i know now, I never would have bought any of her albums. While she is sleeping in her 500 million dollar bed, the poor truly talented kids are sleeping on the street.

The album under-performed because of Madonna's underwhelming lyrics. Mirwais' production CANNOT be faulted. It's BRILLIANT. The kick-off single was poor lyricwise. "So, I went into a bar", etc. and the awful rap. I can't stand "confessional" lyrics and Madonna's been a big instigator since "Human Nature", "Nothing Really Matters" and others. In "Hollywood" also, the personal lyrics are kind of complainy and the worst is "music stations always play the..." Who cares! She made it hard to love. :(

@MyMyMy91 To be fair, i don't agree with calling this album a 'commercial failure.' It debuted at number 1 in 12 major charting countries and has gone platinum in 10. That sounds pretty good to me- it was just ahead of its time. :)
@pancakeing American Life was released April 2003, within 4 months the album had already sold 4 million copies worldwide. To date the album has sold over 8 million units globally. It was successful but just failed to match the success of Music which sold 16 million copies.
@shazu1990 I think the success of Music was one of the reasons for such a change of musical direction with AL. I think Madge knew it would be very hard to continue with the dance/ trance vibe and still improve. So a dramatic change of style was needed.
AL was one of the last Madonna albums i got round to listening to in full, it's one of my favourite now though. Songs like Love Profusion and Nothing Fails are some of my favourite from Madge, and obviously this song is great. :)
@pancakeing Its my facourite album too. Remember Madonna takes new appraches with every record. Its a mix of dance, r&b, rock and country like Music but with a futuristic electro, synthpop touch. The music paved the way for other electronica albums produced by Britney, Christina, Gwen Stefani, Kylie, Gaga, Rihanna, Katy Perry and Kesha. It addresses a lot of contraversial and political themes based around America, such as 9/11 and Iraq war. It was her most meaningful work making it my favorite!

Lady Gaga is a hybrid. they made a soup with Madonna's fashion style, Christina Aguilera's Hair, Kylie Minogue's stage presence and an egg popped out. a day latter, it hatched and gaga came out. please stop putting Madonna and gaga in the same sentence . It's disrespectful to this song and the rest of the album.

-Gaga can be who she is today thanks to Madonna and many other women who MADE the music industry change it's views on women.

Both are strong women, but Madonna was doing this long before Gaga, and honestly Cher was doing the same as well, before Madonna was.
Yay for strong, independent women. :) The world needs more women paving the way for the generations of women after them.

Most of the time the stealing claims are true, sometimes it's so obvious. And she TOTALLY changed herself for fame, all the crazy costumes are not for "being herself" but attracting attention on her ALL the time. As we all know now, that just turned out to be one of the massive lies perpetuated by Bush's war propaganda machine for oil. Makes sense that an album so clearly critical of the American gov't wouldn't fare well commercially. Artistically, true Madonna fans know that "American Life" is one of her finest albums.
