The Japanese are a strong, proud, & culturally inventive people....and they LOVE their Giant Robots and epic action adventure tales.

Actually it is a continuation. It takes place after The End of Evangelion. That's why in this version the ocean water is red, there is a streak of blood across the moon, and there are scenes that show the outline of the dead Eva Series from The End of Evangelion. It's what Shinji wished for when he was god. He's less emo in this version because it's what he wanted.

@GraveKeeper613 No, its not. Its made to look like a reboot. I've seen the eva series, and The End of Evangelion a hundred times, and this is a sequal. All of this is taking place after The End of Evangelion. There are tons of subtle hints showing it. Hints that only eva fans would be able to pick up on. Specific characters even use terms like "again" and "this time" in the series, as if things are repeating. Its a time loop with subtle changes. Like Liliths new face.

@Masasume1 were you stoned when you watched the series? I own The Platinum Collection with all Director's Cuts, Death and Rebirth, and End of Evangelion, and Evangelion 1.11. This is a remake of the series. All interviews with the director even say that it is a remake. Which is why the movie series is called "Rebirth" Of Evangelion. Evangelion 1.11, Evangelion 2.22, and the soon to be released in Japanese theatre (hopefully in a year or two) Evangelion: Quickening. All part of the Rebirth series

The same events (for the most part) are happening over with the same people (for the most part) but earths damage (and the moon) remain the same.

The largest indicator of this is the red ocean. LCL. Left over from The End of Evangelion. The ocean was blue in the original eva series.

It is a retelling of the series as well as a sequal. The kind of genius you'd see from Neon Genesis.

Everyone they've asked about that call it a remake. What you say makes sense, BUT it is a remake. All signs point to it. Also the ocean was red in the series. Not everywhere, but they just remade it to make the planet more "disastrous" since the whole of Earth was devastated in the Second Impact.

Gainax can say what they want, what it all comes down to is what the creator thinks, and he has not denied peoples claims that it's both a remake and a sequel, but he has hinted that it may be true. Besides the fact that there is DIRECT evidence in 1.11 and 2.22 that was caused by the events of End of Evangelion is hard to deny. The blood streak on the moon from Liliths death, as well as the outline from the dead Eva Series, along with the LCL ocean. Remnants

@Masasume1 Actually, as pointed out by another, the LCL ocean is due to Second Impact. Second Impact in the original series made the oceans in Antarctica red too.

As for the blood streak on the moon, an unused storyboard for 2.0 states that it sprayed out from the South Pole during Second Impact and reached the moon.

While these are obviously meant to reference EoE, I think that's all they are: references and nods to the original series.

@Masasume1 As for the chalk outline, it COULD be an outline of the Eva Series, but it could also be a remnant from a failed Eva test. Or perhaps, as one theory I recently read stated, it's actually the outline of one of the Adams whose body washed up. Maybe some of the Evas ARE the Adams.

@PastShadow Adam actually is not mentioned in the new movies. Instead of Adam, they have The Key of Nebakanezer. And the Evas in the original series were made from Adams DNA. They're modified clones.

The original series mentioned that Adam was found in Antarctica and caused Second Impact (We later see Adam in a fetal stage frozen in stasis). Also in the new series, they don't say what caused the Second Impact.

The four giants of light shown during the Second Impact flashback, though they're only named in 1.0's preview for 2.0. I was suggesting that since the Key fills in for the role of the Adam Embryo in the new movies, the Adams might have not regressed to an embryo state and merely washed up on shore where SEELE grabbed them and made them into the Evas.

Actually, nobody died at the end. Everyone had their AT fields taken down so that their minds would all become one, including Misato (it shows Rei/Lilith take her after she was shot). This was The Human Instrumentality Project (Although the Project seems to have new goals in the Rebuild). After Shinji became god, he decided that people should have the choice to regain their bodies, and people would slowly come back one at a time. The first two to come back were Shinji and Asuka.

Scratch that, got Misato confused with Ritsuko. Misato was blown up after being shot. We do hear/see Misatos thoughts and memories though during the time Shinji's mind is joined with everyone else though, so in some way she must have become one with The Human Instrumentality Project.

Mari's voice acting was one of my favorite parts of the Japanese dub, so it will be interesting to see how the English dub matches up. So far, I'm thinking that it will turn out pretty well. It will be fun to see how crazy she gets in full "blood knight" mode :).
