  • Bruce, at the end you say, "i'll see you later." But when exactly will you see me later? that is very vague, I don't like being lied to.

  • Do you know if a 1998 Cavalier requires a special sort of Antenna Adapter thats cost a bit more because its connected to the airbags?

  • Do the 2004 cavalier base models have a light for the gear selection in an automatic

  • how do you remove the plastic part of the dash just below the windshild? mine is cracked in 2 places and id like to take it off and see what i can do with it. great video by the way!

  • @live2ski550 I tried to get that same piece at the junkyard. From what I have seen the whole under layer of the dash is all one piece and is connected and the piece that butts the windshield is the only exposed section. You will have to strip the entire dash down to the metal frame and replace the whole thing. Somebody tell me if I am wrong.

  • Oh I guess the top dash?

  • Hey Bruce I was wondering what that piece that you took off is? In my Chevy it's cracking and needs to be replaced. Thanks!! :)

  • did you use an integration adapter

  • Thanks for taking the time to make this vid very useful

  • Many thanks for taking the time to make these two videos - very handy that you posted this, especially considering that getting to the radio on these Cavaliers is such a pain in the butt.

  • Hey Bruce Whats the switch for?? I had to do this once to replace the dash when my MPG neddle was getting stuck. had to replace the who thing. Looks like I am going to have to do it again to replace some burnt out lights. guess I will wait till I put a new radio in. Thanks for the upload

  • 2004 with 223K miles and alot of offroad time. :)

  • how about that other pise

  • Hey Bruce,

Thanks! Question -- the air circulating / fresh valve is making an ugly noise, and it's above the blower fan and to the left, under the passenger side. Any idea if this can be accessed from the top if I take the dash off? It's damn near impossible for an adult male to remove from underneath, with a blind screw. I was close, but stopped, and retightened the blind screw, as I figured I'd have no way to put it back together in the awkward (upside down, headfirst) position I was in.

  • Bruce Almighty !

  • Thanks man

  • Does this process also work for a 96 Chevy lumina?

  • thanks bruce helped out alot im trying to put in some led lights and i think this is gunna help me so thanks again i appreciate it

  • Thanks bro!! My shit broke everywhere ad got pieces of the the dash on my face and carpet. I got the 20001 coupe base model....... damn cheap chevy shit.

  • thanks bruce

  • Thank you very very much! I totaled my car and i needed to get an aftermarket stereo out of mine but i didn't know how to do it without damaging the car and thus lowering the amount of money i'd get from the insurance check! Much appreciated!

  • Somehow I managed to get my radio in and out in my 97 Cavalier with a lot of swearing and just holding it up out of my way with a screwdriver. But for my parts car, which I am getting the radio out of to give to my boyfriend, I will DEFINITELY do this and not have to swear like a sailor. I wish I had of thought of YouTube before!

  • @hellobruce13 I was told that their may be an anti theft system built in to the car and when you try to remove the cd deck it will disable the car. Keep in mind I have the same year cavalier. Did you run into that problem?

  • @musicismandatory

When you disconnect power from the radio, The radio will be disabled until you enter the anti theft code, which is located in your owners manual. That's it.

  • Great instructions. Will make me look like a hero to my daughter.....

  • What a pain in the ass.... I guess I should've looked into how much trouble it would be BEFORE I promised my girlfriend that I would change her radio out!!

  • Thanks a lot, Bruce! I am helping a friend replace his radio later today and I'm sure I would have eventually found all the screws and whatnot, but your videos let me know beforehand where I should look. You're the man!

  • would it be easier to watch this and install my own radio or have someone that i purchase the radio from, install it?

  • fuck thats to much to do to put in a radio in that

  • @MrBeerman20 IT does take some time and is a lot to do but it doesnt take very long after you get used to it.

  • thanks for the video, saved me a headache and an afternoon full of discovery ;P

  • @boneynerd thanks for watching!

  • Bruce, Thx for taking the time to demonstrate how this is done. I would not have a clue otherwise.

  • @glenndm1 Thanks you for taking the time to watch!

  • Just wanted to give a shout out and say thanks. This really helped me take my dash apart to fix my CD deck. Alot better then reading words off some manual. good job explaing everything to! Thanks again!!

  • @DroidNinja I myself am a visual learning and hate reading plain words on a sheet, i like to see it done once so I know how it is done. I can read the instructions a 1000 times and not get it but see it be done once and i will never forget it; weird. Thanks for watching!

  • the lil dooha goes in the hole...thats what she said!!

  • @Kegath Got that right! haha

  • Nice

  • Mines all cracked

  • Good job bro

  • Wow, great job, I gotta say your better with one hand than I am with two hands...this really helped me figure out how to replace the plastic spacer between the back of the dash and the front windshield, I have a 2001 and seems all cavs in Arizona have the piece cracking... after maket is supposed to be better, at $100 better be

  • You said "doha"!! I can honestly say for a girl this is going to make replacing that horrible POS of a stock stereo in my 2002 cavalier so much easier.

  • hey how did you pluged the sterio i got an 04 cavalier but cant get power for my stereo...how can i get the power for it?

  • thanks for this video. It helped me install a radio in my '97 cavalier. The dash has a different appearance, but the screws and clips go in the same places.

  • Good info that is hard to find. Thanks

  • Great training section. Thank you bro'

  • For those who own a J-body (Cavalier/Sunfire 2003-2005) the process is the same. The tabs are in different parts though... so be careful if you own a Sunfire.

  • i put in an aftermarket radio in my 2003 cav and didnt take the top part off, i fucked my dash up, its all cracked to shit now.

  • can anybody post a video for my chevy cavalier, radio has col-err on the screen of the radio, need to calibrate.please post video or comment...thanks 920dnice...

  • Thanks ur a beast.

  • Thank man!!! good work!

  • Hey Bruce: Great videos. I have to go a little further. I need to replace the odometer light bulb and replace the the second piece of trim (the one that frames the radio and the one between the dashboard and the windshield. Any thoughts on that?

  • you can buy the cheaper wiring harness but you will lose things like ur door chimes, thats what the 100 bad boy is for :)

  • omg you're amazing :) set up my new sub audio system. It's amazing :D couldn't have done it w/o you

  • I hope your not sick of hearing this but thankyou so much for this video! I set my lap top in the back seat and you walked me through step by step it couldnt have been easier! thanks again!, Josh

  • hey bruce, thanks so much! you rock! lol i have the same cav, and year.. mines just 2 door :P but u really helped me thx! ~~ ben

  • im thinking on getting a replacement for my radio every little bump the cd stops and says error

  • they are called torx screws not tork.

  • What kind of radio installation kit did you use and where did you get it?

  • Thank you for posting these videos. I have a 1997 Cavalier and this was the only helpful video I could find. I cannot wait to get my new stereo in - thank you!

  • hey i have a 1999 Model...and im assuming this is all the same...but Thanks alot for making this video...and do you think it would be extremely difficult to install a subwoofer in the trunk? like would it require massive amounts of work or not in the wiring and watnot...just wondering...

  • thanks for posting both part 1 and part 2. after watching these, I was able to successfully remove the dash on my cavalier to replace the factory stereo with an aftermarket one. thanks again!

  • Thanks man this video helped with my 1997 cavalier. The entire set up is the same.

  • Great video! this will make my life so much easier when i upgrade my girlfriend's stereo in her 2003 Cavalier. Thanks!

  • I followed your directions and repled the instrument mini bulbs Thanks How about this video how do you replece the oil sending unit This is about a $30 item it goes out and triggers the low oil guage and check engine light also it may be the cause of a small oil drip leak

  • where did you run your wires from your amp? especially the battery wire?

  • Is there an AUX jack hidden behind the radio?

  • I also have a 2004 Cavalier, and I have a question or two about the aftermarket radio, or head unit. My cousin is a huge junkie for car audios and he says I need to get a head unit and a fitting for the head unit. Can you explain to me what he means by a fitting?

  • Great !! Hey, anyone ever have a problem on cavalier with right low beam light not working - bulb is good and high beams work Just right low beam is out - figure I have to take dash apart to check wiring

  • thanks for the video. shit ton ton help with putting in my radio and sub, thanks

  • i wanna know why my radio won't work when i took my stock radio out.. i know there are supposed to be a couple more wired hooked to another to get power but im not sure which ones they are

  • @lingoman0 what you need to do is connect a wire from the fuse block to the red wire on the radio and you should be all good. i connected mine to the wiper fuse i think, cause its a 25amp fuse and is an ING source fuse so will only be on when the car in on.

  • You are the man. Thanks

  • your a bad ass you dont even know how much time you saved me and how many broken dash parts you saved me by showing these two videos on here thank you and have a great day bro you deserve it

  • thanks for the help made the job easy and quick!

  • how do you replace the front door speakers because it has that hooked piece not just wires

  • thanks very much for the video.. I m gonna change the radio..

  • Thanks for this vid. i have to redo my stepper motors on my dash cluster and I would have just started prying on the plastic around the cluster. Good job.

  • I Switched out my radio in my Cav without having to take out the dashboard. Was much easier.

  • @SiKarioDeBarri0 not doubting you did do that but i think thats almost inpossible unless you radio bezel is broken. You need to take the top dash off then remove the radio bezel to get to the radio in the first place. Sorry, if you did remove the radio without taking hte dash apart please let me know, i would like to see how its done and cut back on 15 mins, thanks.

  • he said place it in the hole lol:)

  • Touchy touch the airbag? OUCH!

  • i have a 2002 cavilier and the entena conected to the radio doesnt unplug wut do i do with tht cn i just splice it to my new radio?

  • I had a 1996 Cavalier, and taking the dash out was a pain in the ASS. My cobalt is so much easier.

  • Broke my dash trying to yank it off before watching this video -_-

Now I know how to do it correctly though, Thanks!

  • Hey bruce whats up? Hey do you know where the signal flasher relay is in the cavalier? I got a 98 and cant find it?

  • @kontra its under dashboard on top of the brake pedal... its attached deep inside the dashboard

  • what dash kit, wire harness, and antenna adapter did u use to hook it up, and how much did it all cost?

  • Thanks a ####-ton! Your vid is a GIGANTIC help!!!

  • Thanks for showing i dident know how to take mine off, so i just ran signal from my back speakers to my amp and its work 100% great but wish i would have seen this video when i needed it lol but still good to know thanks

  • Damn YouTube rocks! Thanks for the video. VERY HELPFUL!

  • there's a sound coming from my AC, like something is stuck in the fan. Is the fan reachable through those vents ?

  • helpful video, thanks.

want to see what these can do 0-100 stock? check my vid

  • Thank you so much! This is perfect. I had no idea it was that hard to get that black plastic piece off to change the radio, but at least now i know how. tks a million.

  • I have an '04 and you have saved my ass man... Idk wtf chevy was thinking but taking the dash off to throw in my aftermarket deck was a BITCH. espescially that screw by the vents in the center of the dash. much obliged

  • I wish I had seen this video before I installed an after market stereo in my 2000 cavalier, but I need to replace the dash anyhow since the stereo was stolen, the thief ripped out the center section of the dash. How much more work is it to replace the plastic section ,that is butted against the windshield? Since mine is broken is three pieces.

  • thats alot of work to change the radio it took me 20 minutes to change the radio in my wifes 97 cavy

  • this is a great video. but only one suggestion next time if you could tell us what size sockets well need that would be helpful thanks

  • have a 2002 cav just took apart the dash and radio trying to hook up aftermarket radio but its not working trying to use stock harnes but it says online the yellow 12v wire

needs to be hook in with the ingition switch for some reson dont kmow how anybodie have the same problem

  • thank you bruce!! i am performing an install today and this is a big big help. i had no idea what i was in for for my first install.

  • i got a 2000 is it the same way ?

  • @bigb121992 yeah man, I'm pretty sure its the same way, but not positive

  • @bigb121992 they're all nearly identical my 97 was the same way

  • @bigb121992 MY 2001 WAS THE SAME

  • Did you have to pay $100 for an special interface, or were you able to find a wiring harness from wal-mart or best buy? I just bought a new radio, and got my dash off with the help of your video, but when i went to plug in my new radio i found out they sold me the wrong wiring harness. Now I'm worried I have to buy a more expensive special interface since it is a post-2000 model. Please let me know what you're using-- Joseph

  • @jdickens86 UPDATE: Best Buy tried to sell me a $120 interface, but I called a car stereo store and they sold me a regular harness and even wired it up and put my dash back together for $20

  • hey if its not to much trouble u should make a video on how to remove door pannels and remove speakers in the back if u can thx will help alot

  • what a cheaply made car. worst pos Chevy ever made.

  • . but I have no idea how the factory XM connects to the Factory stereo...and will it connect to an XM ready Aftermarket stereo?! If so... maybe i'll just swap it out instead of buying that 70 dollar adapter. What I DO know, is that FM transmitters are terrible! So it's gotta be wired in! :) Sorry for the rambling, lol... but thanks again man!!

  • Bruce, This was excellent and I really appreciate it. I've owned about 8 Cavaliers, ranging from 1988 to my current 2004... and I've done a LOT with them, but never touched the radios on my 02 or 04...

  • I am worried about the air bag will it go off when taking out the dash if lightly hit or simply touched

  • @zmoney465 No it shouldnt go off if it's simply touched or hit BUT don't take chances, what you should do, it take off the negative wire on the battery and also take out the airbag FUSE this is located on the left side with all the other fuses. Thanks!

  • @hellobruce13 so after you take out the stock radio, do i have to buy a radio installation kit for the new radio? and also, do i have to buy a wiring harness?

  • @supersamurai563 yeah man, you will need both radio installation kit along with the wire harness, you can probably buy a kit with both in it, it might cost like $20 from wal-mart or something

  • @hellobruce13 cool thx

  • thx man this video helped alot

  • thanks man that help me alot for the upper part where the airbag is / u should put in title cavalier dash remover

  • hey whered you get and what kind of wiring harness did you get for tht head unit ive been lookin everywhere for one for a 04 cavy and cant seem to find any

  • @2011irishfan I think I got mine from Walmart, check any other car audio stores they should have them

  • @hellobruce13 yea i bought 2 of them they both didnt work. so i just cut all the wires....is that bad?

  • I have a 2004 cavy and already knew how to remove the dash .. but this really helps

I removed the dash to install led lights on the hvac

is it possible you could make a video on how to remove the stock radio and install an aftermarket one ??

or maybe how to remove the cluster ... i want to get a new one

  • i have taken the dash off my cavalier numerous times...u dont have to take the glovebox off....its just a waste of time...and the dimmer switch just pops out of the plastic piece...you dont have to take the wires off of that

  • Youre correct, you dont have to take off the glove box, but when you're trying to get the other screws and bolts out its just a little easier to get to and see.

As for the dimmer switch, yes it does come out but you need to pull a few clips off of it i believe, i dont remember but i didnt take the switch itself off but undoing one clip is a lot easier, so taking the wires off is easier.

  • Thanks your vid helped.

  • hey guys. im from the nissan crowd but i need someone who knows alot about the ectotec cavs to msg me or comment back. i've been working on some wiring with my dad's '04 cavalier and im not sure but i think the anti theft is screwin us up. thnx

  • Hey all that info was great for me, but now I'm stuck on getting my gauge cluster off. Do you know how to install a new face plate gauge?? I just ordered a new one for my car and I need to install it.

  • Well as far as taking the gauge cluster off all it is, is two torx screws i believe. Then you lift up on the cluster because on the bottom of the cluster there is like two big white "clips" but they dont clip into anything they sit in a hole, they are coned shaped. Once you get that off you need to unplug the back. After you unplug everything is should come right off. As for taking the glass part off to install a face plate,

  • I've never done it but I believe there are clips you need to push in on the cluster itself, their will be a few around the whole instrument. And that might be it, but im not positive...

  • Thanks im gona give it a try.

  • i have the same year cav and i swear i dont kno who was smokin what when they decided to make the dash...its rediculous!!!

  • thanks a bunch...i had to do this on a 2002 sunfire......

  • A lot of work to make a video... Nice instructional and thx for the post!

  • yo this video helped a shit load

but i wanted to kno if u had like some wierd problem with installin ur head unit involving the ignition its like an additional red cable

  • nope i didn't, sorry man...

  • thanks, this video helped me a lot.

    but I have to say...

the way chevy made this, is the most retarded dash set-up I've ever seen. lol

  • i wish i could find a video of how to take the dash of a silverado 2007!!!

  • im telling you man when i had my cavy it was fuckin hell installing my stereo!!!

  • Dude Ur a Fucking Genius !

  • Excellent man!! hope you keep helping this way just good!!!! thanks frpm Ecuador southamerica

  • muy buen video felicidades ojala subieras mas videos parecidos, tienes razon este video sirve mucho y me servira gracias

  • great video, I bought a 6 disk in dash changer for my 03 Cav and after all the B.S it was security code locked, the dealer wants to remove it and check the serial number if its not stolen, they will charge $100 to activate the raido..I put the old one back in..

  • dang man my dashbord was craked like in 3 places cuz sombody took it our wrong i suppose . i cant seem to find a place were they can sell them :[ any ideas msg me

  • I believe so

  • would this be the same process for a 99 cavalier?

  • this guy knows what hes talking about but i would say when putting the dash back together leave some of the clips out . it will make it 10 times easier to get in it again

  • ----- text was too long----Did you switch the stereo and control knob sections, or do the newer model cavaliers come with them like that? please help im trying to gather as much information about this before next payday so i can get a new stereo system. thanks

  • uhh well for me my radio cover ( the black piece that goes over everything when its all put together) it didnt really fit well because the way to the big black piece is made it was tough but as for moving the AC knobs and what not i dont think you will have to, ive seen it done without moving it. As for me switching it, I didnt the newer cavs come this way. Hope i helped...

  • i have a 1997 cavalier rally sport and the switches and knobs for the heat and airconditioning are above the stereo, but in yours they are below the stereo. i only ask this because ive been looking at a new stereo and i need a kit to fit it in, and the kit sticks out a little further than the stock stereo does. some people review the kits and say, once installed, cups in the cupholder get in the way of the new and longer stereo. ---- next comment----

  • Disconnect the negative battery terminal and nothing will have power running to it including the airbag.

  • I just wouldnt unhook the airbag at all and thanks everyone for viewing my videos and commenting, i hope you like them :)

  • Even though it was a bit shaky, it was very helpful. I haven't tried to take the dash off yet but I hope that it will be as easy as you made it look - I have an '02 and it looks pretty much the same. You have a great tutorial voice by the way! Cheers

  • Great info! Thanks for sharing

  • im still just worried about the airbag, could you unhook it? or bad idea? and will the dash just pop back on? after your done?

  • that helped a lot, before I had found a text description but this is a much better way of doing it. i have a '98 that im thinking about putting an FM modulator in. i agree, you should make more videos about the car :) good job, thanks

  • good info thanks

  • for taking the dash apart you should NOT touch the ignition....

  • You have so anything with the ignition, like unhooking it??

  • wow.. this is going to help alot. Im helping a friend install LED bars in the foot wells and i was going to use power from the cigaret lighter. so thanks. We destroyed my other friends 2000 by just trying to rip out the plastic piece. just to pint it, ha but we ended up taping everything off and paintin it in the car :) thanks.

  • talk about weight reduction! :)

  • thanks dude make other videos for other part of speaker of the door or anything because this helped me a lot nice tutorial by the way

  • No problem man, whatever I can do to help, I took me awhile to figure everything out myself then I decided to help everyone out by posting this, haha. But Thank you for viewing my videos:)
