  • How many ounces of fuel does it it take for a full charge and how long does 1 full charge last? Can you use Heet instead of isopropyl alcohol?

  • lighting it?

  • I made a few of these, thanks for this video. I don't have an alternative heat source for my house so I have a few here in the house, too.

  • I'm the kinda person that would try to use the alcohol as fuel in my car

  • Keep in mind that a bean can or any other can works good too.

  • Thank you. Your instructions are superb.

  • From what I've read online high proof liquor (190 proof) has the highest heat content per gram, clean burning, and generally non toxic.

  • Good idea but why don't you build a fire

  • Good video. Although I stick to my tent catback heater and about 6 cans of propane. Flameless is the best but this video is better than buying those goofy emergency candles. More heat the better :)

  • Great video - thanks!

  • I used 50 percent alcohol from the dollar store.and it wouldnt stay lit..then went to the pharmacy for 70 percent at 450 a bottle with taxes in so really its.thats not that cheap..if a whole bottle lasts only a couple hours...but in an emergency.i would say...probably the best 5 bucks or so youd ever spend.

  • thanks so much for this video I have made a dozen in the last week to give as gifts!

  • Awesome knowledge! Thank you for sharing!!

  • The intro had me trippin out.

  • I am getting the same error that it's been removed. Is there a different link?

  • Hey, Doc. Thanks for the video. But I'm getting a "This shared file or folder

link has been removed. " after I click on the link.

  • make sure you dont tape the lighter back to the can. or ....boom !

  • what would happen if you used 100% denatured alcohol the types the use for (maratine) stoves on boats

  • Very informative, thanks for a great video!

  • can you use a bunch of paper or does it have to be toilet paper

  • @3152222 - toilet paper

  • Would you be able to use this in a tent if your camping ?

  • @UStacticalmedic36 - I would strongly recommend against using this in a tent . . . that is a recipe for potential disaster.

  • Been carrying one for years Doc, thanks for sharing.

  • You sir, are an ANGEL.

Thank you for the goodwill and altruism that fuel your efforts.

  • Hey Doc, I love your videos. Great stuff all around. I'm getting in to 2m currently, so I especially like those. Have you considered doing a video on various water purification methods? How about comparing energy bars for use in a survival situation? Keep up the good work.

  • another utuber did a test on this stove using 70 and 90 percent... do not use 90 percent it creates a lot of fluffy ash like junk that floats all over the place. the 70 percent doesn't smoke as much (you just don't notice it) the extra heat from the 90 percent is too much for cars and other confined places.

  • What are your thoughts about using fiberglass insulation or perlite instead of toilet paper?

  • this could also be used as a stove too right? i don't see why not if you make little risers on the lid

  • thanks alot this is going to help me when i go camping with my son o ya i made it

  • We used to do something similar in Boy Scouts for ceremonies. Keep up the work Doc.. Fair winds and following seas!

  • wait wont the toilet paper deteriorate over time? toilet paper is meant to break down when wet.

  • did he just give youtube the bird? 4:35

  • Look's like it would great for an emergency stove to.

  • I dig the simplicity of the design. Definetly going to construct a few for testing. Thanks Doc!

  • Great vid Doc!!! I made 4 of these with my kids. They were very easy to build and the kids loved helping to make them. You should have seen their big eyes when I lit one. They were hoping for an emergency for several days after just so we could use one. Great project to do with the kids. Thanks.

  • my uncle would like this, he is in 12 foot of snow most of the time!

  • cool vid i remember when they used to use an old steel tabacco can and a small botle of gas line anti freeze or menthal hydrate is there a difference?i have also heard of stories where they used to place them under a vehicles oil pan in the winter to pre heat the oil to make the eng start better!

  • Thanks Doc!!

  • is it just me or do this videos sound just work in one side?

  • @Petegrin1 yeah w/ headphones it was playing on the left side. i just flipped them around

  • 5* informative & helpful video. I know what Xmas gifts are being handed out this year. Tks for the video & hard work!

  • Great video, these are going out as xmas gifts this year.

  • How long will the heater burn?

  • I found that if you use the same technique with the can and the toilet paper but do not add alcohol dip it in wax it burns alot longer and is safer but thanks for the cool idea :)

  • nice vid again... thx doc...

uh.. and, dont forget to give Nut´n and very one of those..

    :)

    keep em goin

  • just made one of these today and it works great!! Thanks Doc

  • automotive stores such as Napa sell the 90%

  • Hey Doc, just watching some of your older videos, and I wanted to say that any combusted alcohol or hydrocarbon will produce CO. Granted the amount produced by burning isopropyl alcohol might be negligible (depends on availability of oxygen and temperature), but care should still be taken to have proper ventilation. Sorry about the wall of text btw.

  • iso-heet is 100%, btw... it's marketed as fuel line antifreeze/water remover. Excellent stuff.

  • you could cook on that too id say.

  • I made one ,cool and easy.Thanks Doc......DKG

  • @DesertKnifeGuru - Awesome!

  • Hey Doc, I am going to help out my church teaching the Royal Rangers. Just found this video and will use it for sure. Also the level 1 first aid kit!

    Take Care Doc

    Matt I hikearound

  • @ihikearoundcom Cool - let me know how it turned out.

  • @ihikearoundcom - I was a Royal Ranger 30 years ago :--))

  • Doc, this is the third of your videos I have watched, I just found your site today, and I am very grateful to have found your videos. They are an extremely great asset ! And the quality of the presentations are outstanding! I am going to make a few of these! Thanks Sir!

  • @polemicvs - Thank you!

  • quick, easy and best idea iv seen

  • it might be a good idea to point out the tabs on the ends of the tape where is is folded back to make it easier to take it off with very cold hands. sorry, i dont think iv'e really explained that well, i hope you understand.

  • Great Video, I would like to see more people coming up with ideas like this for the upcoming global fallout.

  • Thanks USNERDOC, keep making more videos like these!

I just made a couple of these today, I had forgot to pick up the paint can opener so instead of going back to the store I looked around for something else I could use. I ended up using one of those back plates for a PCI card bay on a computer. It's nice and flat, and is the exact height of a 1qt paint can.

Having one in each of my cars will give me some peace of mind in the cold New Hampshire winters :)

  • Pretty Nifty, Thanks

  • Since heat rises if you crack the window heat will escape through crack at top before it can lower.

Wouldnt it be better to turn heater duct from "recirculate" to "fresh air" setting? Then fresh air would come in under the dash.

Unless this is more of a hand warmer, rather than a space heater... then carry on.

  • Keep in mind that alcohol vaporizes are a much lower temperature than water. If the temperature in the car gets above 100 degrees, the pressure inside that can might cause the lid to pop off and fill the interior of your trunk with alcohol vapor. A tiny spark would cause it to explode, so take it out of your car in the summer time and put it back in the winter.

  • Every pharmacy has 91% Isopropyl alcohol.

But, how long would this burn for?

  • haha this is so great, off to the wild!!

  • what if i want to drink the alcohol ??

  • @sivko23 if you drank alcohol that pure you would go blind.

  • Wow this was great! I just made four of them and it was easy to make. I messed up though and bought the wrong alcohol. I saw Denatured Alcohol at Home Depot that had "for clean burning fuel" or something on the side so I grabbed that and when I went back over the instructions, I noticed it said Isopropyl and not Denatured. The stove works, but is this bad to burn? Thanks!!! I'm working on making my Level 1 first aid kit also, thank you for your video and hard work.

    -Joe

  • Joe -

No problem with the denatured alcohol. I'm doing an update on this very issue.

  • @Finaltheorem47 @Finaltheorem47

Actually, the denatured alcohol will burn cleaner than the isopropyl. Isopropyl will generate more fumes and soot. That said, denatured alcohol is 1/2 methanol, which is nasty stuff, so don't spill it on yourself more than necessary. If used in a car - always vent.

Finally, with a little bit of hardware cloth, these heaters also work as cooking stoves!

  • Wow, great video. I'll be constructing one tomorrow! Thanks a lot for taking the time to help others!

  • WOW great idea. Wish I would have watched this vid 5 days ago before the power went off. LOL thanks for the great vid.

  • cool

  • Great video.. That looks kindof like my Heat Cell canned heat that I buy for backup heat. But yours is much larger and would put off much more heat. I will have to try this. Thanks!

  • Couldn't ask for a better presentation. Solid video and documentation to boot. Great idea, low cost, simple to make and it just might save your life. Thanks for making a very enjoyable video. 5 Stars

  • I notice you still have the lighter taped to one of the lit stoves; be careful, when the can heats up the butane will explode. Another trick you can try is melting down some petroleum jelly and pouring it in with the alcohol... Don't use too much, but it works to preserve your flame and extend the burn time

  • @blackroses4her - That heater was briefly lit for video purposes only. I will annotate accordingly. I do not advocate adding petroleum jelly. I recommend you consider making your own video on the subject.

  • Good video usnerdoc.

If you fill the can up when your alcohol is cold then leave the can in a hotter environment the can may build up enough pressure to pop the lid.

I work with solvents and twice I have had bottles break because of the pressure buildup.

So I wouldn't fill the can to the top during storage.

  • This is one of the neatest things I've seen in a while. Great job. I just built four myself and tested one, couldn't be easier. Thank you for such an inexpensive, useful, amazing product! 5 stars all the way!

  • so about how long will it burn on one fill

  • First I'd like to complement you on you videos, they are very interesting and informative. Also, do you think that the quart can's lid could be used as the insulating base instead of including a larger gallon lid?

  • It would have a tendency to rock side to side slightly, and that is one of the absolute last things you want to happen with a large amount of relatively loose liquid that is on fire. That would be a horrible spill.

  • great work.

  • first class presentation!

  • Thank you sir!

  • how long dose it burn

  • Good question. I've never timed one. I might have to do that in the future. When I do, I will post the answer.

  • My only question is why do you have Nutnfancy and TNP under your tags when you ain't Nutnfancy?

  • Should only be on my suture and First-Aid kit videos as I did them in support of his Level I kit. Looks like a cut & paste error which I will fix . . . thanks for brining that to my attention.

  • this is such a good idea...im gonna make one

  • Cool!

I've got yet another follow up to answers questions and debunk some myths.

  • where can i get unsed paint cans? i have looked for them for other projects, no luck.

  • Great question!

I get them from Home Depot and Lowes. You can also pick them a good paint store. I started using them to keep batches of touch up paint for our house after re-painting.

  • thanks.

  • I LOVE this! Can you tell me what program you used to make this video? Was it Adobe Presenter?

    Thanks!

  • mikebius -

Thanks! I used a Mac Powerbook and iMovie . . . thats it.

  • Wow, very well done. Thank you so much.

  • Now that is one cool (and easy to make) emergency heater.

I think I will get the materials and make one this weekend.

Thanks for the info = keep up the good work.

    :)

  • Steve -

Many thanks . . . its an honor to have you comment! I've enjoyed your channel.

  • That is the coolest video effect I have seen on youtube. Your can heater vid crushed mine. Great Job as always. I wish I had more stars to give.
