good answer, more listening time can be very helpful even for those who love these songs, if not (also helpful) for those who do not (yet love these songs). funny but true IMO.
Fellas, work the stuff out , these guys may be "whatever" but I guarantee u , your girls will hear this and know you've got them ( Just on corny alone!) ... Do yur thing, It's really on us anyway isn't it?
I hear a touch of Queen's 'Bohemian Rhapsody' in this. Also, the Beatles' 'A Day in the Life' at the end. No problem. Love them both, also ELO. Jeff Lynn is a great musician.
Proto-synthpop, and let nobody tell you any different. They may have been hairy & bearded muso's but this track more than other points the way to the 80s. A very brave choice for a single & opening track in 1977 - and, for all it's qualities as a song, a very under-rated performance.
This is (seriously) first ever song I heard on vinyl, I was 5 back then (89). I wasn`t allowed to touch my fathers HiFi but I was a clever beast and managed to turn it on when my parents were in work. I chose ELO because of the Flying Saucer on the cover and Turn to Stone came out first...love it to this day.
@Imyourcheekygirl Yeah, you can sing that again! :-) Unfortunately the rock world is too busy giving politically correct accolades to the likes of Michael Jackson instead. LOL!!! Even the Beatles were not quite up to the creativity of ELO.
I have Out of the Blue on vinyl, and while I wasn't too impressed at first, it really grew on me. I'd have to say it's better then the likes of ELO II or OtTD, although I personally like those two albums more. More clear, put-together and melodic. Absolutely a blast to listen to, and Concerto for A Rainy day cannot be beat.
@instantkarma257 Secular music can be uplifting and this is. ELO has been referred to as a "clean band" and they were. Don't look at them through the jaded eyes of the 21st Century. Then trash that is expected now would not have been tolerated in the 1970s on radio stations. Remember Olivia N John's trashy "physical" was such an unwelcome milestone in the early 1980s. Turn to stone is about a guy who petrifies when his girl is gone. He's totally lost without her. It's rather a nice idea.
@pablo3555 They weren't underrated in the mid-1970s...back then, they RULED the radio (which was the only broadcast music source we had back then, other than a couple of weekly TV shows with live {or lipsynched} performances)
Back in the day, I went to an ELO concert. Best I ever seen and I've seen about ever body. Lazer lights had just come out and this was the first concert to use them. So new, the music, the effects of the light show and they were very entertaining themselves. Great blast from the past.
Loved ELO. Also enjoyed their creative LP Record assembled model. Jeesh: I miss the LP days! It was like a Surprise Package: An Album & an additional surprise!
God this brings back memories....LOVE ELO!!!! My sisters and I used to play this music all the time...drove my parents nuts but....Mom and Dad became ELO fans! :)Thanks for posting :)
back in the 60s music took a wild and creative turn, so the youth of the 60s who didnt have todays electronic distractions, tured to music,by the 70s there was a music store on every corner.I got my 1st electric guitar in 76.Every other kid in urban America was learning to play.so by the 80s there was hundreds of bands to choose from in every catagory. Also there were no real wars and the economy was ok so songs reflected love and good times. Now kids play xbox
A friend turned me on to ELO and I can't stop listening to their music now! It's amazing, I didn't think that anybody else in my school liked music like this, and I'm glad I became friends with him and he introduced me to ELO. (:
One of their most under-rated songs reaching only number 18 in the charts while 'Hold on Tight' (which is inferior to this song in my opinion )reached number 4 !
It was most certainly a compliment. If you type in "John Lennon and ELO" into the search bar,you will come across an audio clip of John on some radio show where he's doing an intro for the Showdown record, which he declares a "great record" and refers to them as a "nice group" and calls them "son of beatles".He obviously was a fan.
A New World Record was the first album I ever bought, back in 1976, I know, then Out of the Blue, my second. Played them both to death. Punk happened, admitting to be an ELO fan was social suicide! But my love never died. So much happened in the 70's musically, it seemed normal at the time, but looking back over the years, it was an incredible period. Yeah whatevah! ;)

I can remember this album as clear as day. ELO into the blue. It was the first album i ever bought with my money. There were a lot of good songs on this album. I love the fact that if you listen, that they (ELO) love using Beatles chord structures. In the end of it the music that ELO have created stands out as much as the Beatles.
@zkxv He didn't mean that in a good way. Besides, it was a wry comment on Lynne's tendency to sound like Macca and his propensity for lifting Beatle's riffs.
@flapjack012 Because Lynne was a HUGE admirer of the Beatles, and was heavily influenced by their songs and musical style. If you listen to this and then something of the later Beatles, you'll notice that they're very similar.
