Indeed. That's why this is #1 in the series. Because that's how mankind did it for thousands of years befrore they learned how to "make" fire.

If the definition of "fire" is "flaming combustion", then maybe I did "make" fire here, buyour point is valid in that I did not initiate the combustion from scratch.

I wanted to start with the obvious. It's often easier to "borrow" fire from someone else than to make it yourself by primitive means.

I think there was a big technological leap from simply controlling a fire, moving embers around, etc, to something like the hand drill.

Archaeological evidence seems to point to hearths where a fire was kept going constantly for moths or years at a time.

But I wasn't there, so can't say for sure.
