  • I don't see the problem with having too many rudiments, if people only ever play 26 and never do anything else then chances are they're a very unimaginative drummer.

The more you play the better, really. Make something up to allow you to play a certain fill and chances are you've made up a rudiment, the more the merrier.

  • way to much arm movement and sloppy

  • 12 years old. Just got this rudiment done. So glad i can put it all together now.

  • Dammiitt i can't do thisDx

  • Hey thank you for all your video, I really enjoyed watching all of them (40).

I will be waiting for more videos..

    Thank you.

  • try to put a good accent at the end of the ratamacue

  • ~enda penat??

  • is it good to do drum rudiments on a pillow??? hahaha

  • @pingpongball34 Actually, yes. My instructor (who played for Phantom) tells us to practice anything 4 ways; slower, starting with the left hand, playing with the other end of the stick and yes, playing on a pillow.

  • I'm a filipino and im 10years old and grade 5 and i am a band member in our school

just a little more and i can perfect my drum roll........

  • @jedjed26 Is there a reason you included the fact your filipino?

  • @TrippyDrummer

are you trying to be racist? im asking nicely. coz im a filipino too

  • @irwin3036able no i was just wondering why he said he was filipino? dang someone is a little over offensive

  • @TrippyDrummer

oh, alright. sorry for the misunderstanding :)

  • @jedjed26 Did we need your life story?

  • well then.....

im a self-taught rocker banger drummer, that was intimidated by the rudiments, but felt it was time. I finished em all, and cant say thanks enough. Great lessons guys, i really appreciated them. Very clear, well presented, good video, good audio, great percusionist. I thought it would take years not weeks. I owe it all to your lessons. THANKS

  • gawd i love drumbum . com.

that's where i bought my graphite nylon sticks. they're absolutely fucking amazing. xD

they're seriously great. and for only 20 dollars American. they are just simply the best sticks i have ever used. they lasted my about a year and a half, before one of the sticks broke. the rebound is the thing that sticks out the most though. IT'S FUCKING AMAZING. buy those sticks :D

  • Ya you're talking about William Tell Overture haha I agree

  • Is it bad that when I sing this in my head while playing it, I envision cowboys chasing indians (Native Americans).

It is soooo similar to that one song except for the triplets at the end.

  • Well, I can't take all the credit, I also derived those techniques from countless hours of listening to all kinds of music, mainly Latin, like Salsa and Merengue and Samba and Cumbia, which is what I was raised with, because I'm Spanish, and a lot of Classic Rock, which I was exposed to by my dad, because he loved The Police and Led Zeppelin and The Who and The Beatles and The Rolling Stones.

  • idea what the other were, until I checked out these 40 vids. And the really funny part is that I had played every single one of these before without knowing what they were called. I had just made them up through hours and hours of jamming and trying to expand on the single and double stroke rolls, and mixing them with paraddidles and flams. They were all just born out of my own creativity. Too bad they had already been established lol.

  • You know what's funny? I've been playing for ten years, and I remember when I started as a kid, my dad took me to this school to take lessons, and this really cool guy came up and talked to us, and before anything happened I asked him what should I practice to become great, and he said, "If you are born with rhythm in your heart, all you need to practice is the single stroke, double stroke, paradiddle, and flam. Everything else stems from that." So I did. And funny enough, I never had any...

  • Dave Weckl says in one of his videos he didn't really practice other than those four either.

  • ''excellent''

  • You move your hands wayyy too much.

  • i wanna hear this guy behind a kit.

  • Thank you soooo much for all of these videos! I've been drumming for 3 years and I knew abaout paradiddles etc. Although I never actually went out of my way to learn them. Not to mention a few of the other rudiments! Thanks soooooo, sooo much for making these videos! They're a great help! :D

  • Guys, here's the deal! 1st off, we should thank this drummer for all these vids made in the hopes of helping lay the basic foundation in proper drumming technique for all drummers. I played for many years Professionally & graduated College as a Music Major but as I recall, there REALLY are just 26 Standard American Drum Rudiments. IMHO they've added some - almost TOO many, to the point of redundancy ... tangents of other rudiments - but regardless thanks goes out to this drummer anyway. BRAVO!!

  • There ARE only 26 Standard American Drum Rudiments. These were adopted by the N.A.R.D.(of which I am a member) in 1934. Since that time there have been other international rudiments and hybrids added to the original list.

  • On my Vic Firth poster and every where else I see, there are currently 40 Rudiments

  • Yeah I think the drag rudiments are so much easier than the flam rudiments, I'm currently going through all of them and practicing them, looks like I'll have to resist tearing my hair out when I get to the inverted flam tap...

  • wow theres a huge difference his left handed ratamacues and right handed

  • not the good kind either

  • Shit!!!

  • Personally, all the rudiments that involve the flam are the hardest. Except flam tap/accent.

  • yes i agree.

  • i think drags are more difficult to play cleanly. my hands work well with the flam.

  • Oh yeah..since i commented on this picture my flams have gotten 100x better. Drags...not so much. Gives me something to work on though

  • I think there hardest to get going fast ne way, the timing on the draggs can also be difficult

  • this has gotta be the hardest :(

  • its not but not the hardest... i can't even choose what's hardest in the flams either.

  • i can just tell you now, this is no where near the hardest, i have all three ratamacues down, and can barely play any of the flam rudiments. FLAMS CAN SUCK IT! I HATE THEM!

  • you didn't accent the last note.

  • This is so unaccurate. It's like he wanted to make it as hard as possible for people to understand what the rudiment is about.

  • explain to me how this is so "unaccurate." (should be inaccurate)

  • Could you write it out in the description in the RLLR etc. pattern please?

  • LLR LLR LLRLRL RRL RRL RRLRLR

  • Thanks!

  • even your arms out man

  • I really enjoyed watching these lessons. Thanks!

  • One of the few rudiments I enjoy doing, it sounds like a horse gallop if you do chain drags like this.

  • thanks for the demo. i was just wondering whether the ruffs repeated (LLR LLR) or switched from hand to hand. this clears it up. the ancient book i'm working out of has some great solos, but it doesn't specify sticking for triple ratamacues in the rudiments list.

  • So wait, you bounce the LL in beginning of each pattern, same with the RR?

I didn't even know that, that's why I could never really do these fast :D. Thanks for showing me man.

  • Thank you very much for these! I will be practicing with these for a long time!

  • try to use more wrist your arm is to stiff

  • as an absolute beginner I'd say these are good warmups and info. Thanks!

  • I applaud him for showing beginners how to do these. But for intermediate and advanced drummers, we can all see that these rudiments he plays are pretty weak in performance. The dynamics of the strokes are not all supposed to be the same. The 3 ruffs are supposed to be soft in the beginning. Like I said in his other videos, his top speed isn't all that impressive and I have a strong feeling that he would not be able to withstand a long period of fast playing. He seemed to lose coordination.

  • CAFanTom,I would love to see you on youtube, doin' your thing Man...A period of fast playing, with say...3 soft ruffs to start with, and some real dynamics and grace notes....Hit me back Man.

  • I really have no idea what you mean or what you are implying.

  • He/She means that if you would please do an instructional video or even just a solo video showing how strong your rudiments are, how fast you can play them, the dynamics of the rudiment, and great coordination (exceeding that of the drummer in this video), then they would be extremely grateful. I just think you're an idiot. Period.

  • Why should I have to? Tell me what is wrong with my comments. If you were a drummer you would agree with me. I don't have to prove anything. My comments were made from experience as a rudimental drummer. And even if I do make a video, you and that GunnerGraham character will just bash it anyway just to get your revenge.

  • 1)I am a drummer

2)These videos are made for beginners, so who cares what advanced players think

3)I stand at an objective point of view, and would only 'bash' your video if it needed to be.

  • Alright, I take back what I said about how this guy isn't a very advanced player and that he doesn't have a very good top speed, but I still support my opinion on how he doesn't have dynamics. And I still don't feel like I need to prove to you with a video that I am better than this guy. You can either take my opinion or not but I think the only person who is allowed to criticize me on my comments is the drummer in this video.

  • Thank you, I'm sorry for chewing you out, I don't think you need to post a video, and this last part here isn't criticizing you, I'm just curious, do rudiments really have dynamics other than accents?

  • Well I wasn't responding to the 3rd part with what I said about criticizing but I was just mentioning that in general. And I'm sorry once again, I did mean accents instead of dynamics. I forgot all my band terminology because I haven't taken concert band in 3 months. I thought accents and dynamics were interchangeable but I realize now that they are not.

  • It's all cool

  • This to me is the only one right now i have to do slow. Good job though man.

  • thanks a lot man for these videos.I started playing really faster now

  • 40 rudiments.. is this all yes?

  • 40 official rudiments

theres like a million hybrids tho

    like the

    ratamaflaflacuediddle :)

  • Cheers! so these are the 40 official ones then?

  • yep! u got it

  • yea

i think it began with 26 then they added the ones that are doubled and tripled up (e.g. double and triple paradiddle and double and triple ratamacue, etc.)

  • I am 51 years old. When I was 8 I started lessons. There were only 26. By the time I got to college....there were about 34.....now.....you can put any 2 or 3 or 4 together and they are considered rudiments......but they all come from the original 26.

  • I am a drummer of age 19 been playing for just under 9 years, nothing compared to yourself.

But i agree, rudiments have developed from the original, they build the bases of all modern rudiments, and all modern playing.

  • I think the idea is all rudiments come from four basic hits, single, double, triplet and flam, and all sort of combinations one can put together into a for measure bar makes a rudiment, of course you can make it as long as you wish, which would give thousends of posible rudiments.

  • More accurately, all rudiments stem from single, doubles, triples, quadruples, invert strokes, and multiple bounce strokes, and the coordination to displace any one of the singles, doubles, triples, or quadruples to create a grace note.

  • @HEYBUDD hello sir could you please do the pains in telling me the original 26?

  • @sidrocksinthisworld

Could...but, they are listed in probably 1000 places on the web. Just Google drum rudiments.

  • @HEYBUDD i agree hybrid rudiments are just combined.good point

  • muy bueno!

    gracias

    :)

  • GO ALL TO EL CARAJO!!!!!1

  • The only reason he is slowing the ruffs down is because most beginners have to see it slowed down, as he has done. But, he should have shown the viewers how to play a ruff or drag before so he wouldn't get criticism on his basics. At least someone is showing all the fresh meat out there the basics.

  • I dont care about his flawd technique, i care about the fact that he doesnt understand ruffs, a ruff isn't played slower when you play at slower tempo's. The ruff is two fast grace notes played before the actual note, not a slow double stroke then a faster one as you play at a higher tempo, a ruff is the same speed throughout!

  • The point of these videos is to help beginners learn rudiments, not show off this guy's rudimental capabilities. I'm absolutely possitive he knows that even when slowed down a ruff is played at full speed, but a beginner can't do that from the start. tell me, when you started playing a ratamaque (Or drag paradiddle, or anything like that) did you start off playing full speed ruffs, or did you have to slow it down?

  • I disagree. This drummer is correct in starting out the ruffs slow. A grace note is not a universal tempo, and I'm not talking about just in drumming terms. Grace notes are most definitely played according to the tempo. What is the definition of "same speed" ruffs. I do think, though, that ruffs are never played that slow in real context so there really is nothing to worry about in playing them too slow.

  • CAFanTom, you are an attention seeking dick - didn't you mommy ever teach you if you don't have anything to say, you should keep your mouth shut?

  • First of all, it's "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all," because obviously I do have "anything to say. " And secondly, if what you mean is what I just corrected about your saying, then I would say that calling me "an attention seeking dick" isn't something nice to say at all either. Hypocrite. And good luck tryin be a better drummer learning from this guy.

  • yeah i have to agree with CAFan. nothing you said in that was nice at all. and i have no doubt that he is an expert drummer and is just expressing his opinion.

  • Thanks for the compliment, but no, I am not an expert drummer. I have been playing rudimentary drumming for 5-6 years now and I am really basing my comments off of what I have learned from my amazing drum teacher.

  • :D ese esta bueno

  • it seems like the drummer is using more arm than wrist...?

  • u will only damage your hand if you use too much rist.

  • yea, thats what i was thinking also but hey, i guess its not really for that though, just to show beginners but me being a snare drummer, it kinda gets me lol

  • come man stop being a jerk.

  • this guy sucks

  • Shutup LegendWannabe. You put out some lessons if your so great. DrumRudiments' videos are a great help for lots of us beginners. That's what they are for, not professional, god-like, overblown egomaniac drummers like you and the other dickheads that just talk shit.

  • I do have videos out. I marched DCI and I have my own drumming website. The phrasing on the drags is wrong half of the time. I'm not being a dick, I'm stating a fact - the player is innacurate, and probably shouldn't be making these videos. Where are YOUR videos? Where do you march? Calm down and check yourself before attacking someone, bud.

  • sweet now i can sharingan leessons
