  • Collins was a tremendous influence on later jazz singing and was certainly an inspiration for Jolson. Because he was a coon-shouter, Collins is usually ignored by modern musical historians--he just couldn't have influenced anybody despite a three-decade career in which he sold millions of records during which all but the last three years preceded electrical recordings! In fact, I'm not sure he ever made an electrical recording.

  • Why is it creepy?? Awesome song. I love Al Jolson. Modern music sucks!!!!

  • @melissamann1000 not neccisarily the music but the context in which the music is being played. also, you need'nt be so luddite about modern music. It doesent ALL suck.

  • A truly timeless melody!

  • this reminds me of the ending of any episode of boardwalk empire

  • its his birthday!!!!

  • Not really hearing the creepy factor, but I tend to listen to this kind of stuff all too much. Arthur Collins any day! It's his birthday today.

  • a bit creepy but sooo awesome too :D

  • What if you heard this in the middle of the night down the hallway in another room?? How creepy would that be??

  • @celticguardian951 Great song for a horror movie in any time period.

  • What the hello? Did I hear that right?

  • @wendys120 yes.

  • Wow!, and so clear. was the record an edison or columbia.

  • way better than lil wayne.

  • /watch?v=7m8QgYWN9qc&feature=channel_video_title

  • I'd rather listen to this than anything tha'ts come out in the last 10-15 years.

  • If this song was put in a scary game and played in a really dark room I would probably freak the f**k out 0_o

  • @phophjoph a scary game?

    like silent hill? XD

  • In 1899 this was pop music. WOOWW.

  • @sillysweet1 Yeah, people actually had to hit the notes even if it was tongue in cheek to do so.

  • @sillysweet1

The kids are listening to this? No wonder society is going to pot.

  • @ewd76 nothing is wrong about pot o_O

  • 1899, what? that old?

  • This shit is pimp mother Hubbard. I'm gonna go rock it in the ghetto and take revenge on the gangsta "music". I use the term music loosely.

  • Believe it or not, out of 7,000,000,000+ people on this planet today, as of January 11, 2012, only 11 people left on Earth were born before 1899, the year this song came out.

  • @OldsVistaCruiser Pretty amazing to think that there are still people alive from the 1800s.. :o

  • @700gsteak - I'm signed into my sports/Philly screen name right now, but the oldest living person as of January 14, 2012 is Besse Cooper. She was born on August 26, 1896, which makes her 115. There are currently 31 people (all female except for one male) alive who were born in the 1800s.

  • tell us if you are in hell

  • 1889!! O.o woooooooow

  • Comment removed

  • @hajimetinoco 1899, not 1889. And yes, that year existed.

  • sweet. wish collections from this time on back were bigger

  • They stole it!

  • on 0:19 to 0:21 it sound like he said what the hell

  • Hello, my baby Hello, my honey Hello, my ragtime gal Send me a kiss by wire Baby, my hearts on fire If you refuse me Honey, you'll lose me Then you'll be left alone Oh baby, telephone And tell me I'm your own Hello, my baby Hello, my honey Hello, my ragtime gal Send me a kiss by wire Baby, my hearts on fire If you refuse me Honey, you'll lose me Then you'll be left alone Oh baby, telephone And tell me I'm your own
  • When you downloaded this, were there by any chance lyrics to this version? I feel like the lyrics aren't exactly the same as the ones that most people are used to. If you could, will you post the lyrics please?

  • @OmniNero froggyeve tripod com/hello.html i think these are pretty accurate

  • is very intersing

  • this feels so fucking weird.

  • Was this an Edison phonograph cylinder or an early grammophone record?

  • @Jeansschwimmer cylinder.

  • Didn't even think they had 'singing' music back then, hahaha cheesy, I prefer the frog version =P

  • @Johny40Se7en

Please tell me you're kidding, you didn't think they had 'singing' music 100 years ago? Jesus Christ.

  • @WigTuts I think someone needs to learn what '=P' means, of course they had singing that long ago dope, it just wasn't like from for example 1920 or 30's onward =/

  • @Johny40Se7en

You put the stupid '=P' after the frog bit, so how was I supposed to know it had anything to do with you not knowing people sang back then? Also what does that text mean after your last comma, is it another language or something?

  • @WigTuts the '=P' isn't stupid you stuck up dick head and what do you mean after the last comma? you must be what alot of people call a 'grammar nazi' - all nazis stink like rotten crap so GTFO.

  • @Johny40Se7en

Great comeback, just shown your true maturity there. And yes, it's called an opinion if I think these 'xD =PPPP s0 rAnDuMbb LLOOOOOOLLLLL xD =DDD =PP' look stupid, so whatever. I'm not a 'grammar Nazi' either, as they point out spelling mistakes whether as I just said the last part of your comment after the comma made no fucking sense whatsoever. Cry some moar, want some whine with your french cries?

  • @WigTuts ... dope! =D

Enough now, your clogging up the comments on this page with your rubbish.

  • @Johny40Se7en

    Again, great comeback.

  • 112 years ago, wow. Welcome to the future. Do "All Coons Look Alike..." now motherfucker??

  • I'm listening to this and suddenly I'm thinking of the Alien...

  • @legendarycupcake Just dont eat the soup man. Check Please!

  • wow, a "record" from the 19th Century! Thanks for posting! I've never heard a voice from the 19th Century, ever! The telephone was still relatively new, he's singing like it's a phone call!

  • @newphx you should listen to the recording of Florence Nightingale from 1890.

  • @1991MRjesse thanks for the tip! I did...fascinating!!

  • @1991MRjesse :-)

  • I have a feeling that when this guy died and went to heaven,he became gods entertainer.

  • from this to dubstep HOW

  • I thought to myself "holy shit!" when I saw this was sang in 1899. Gotta agree with the commenter below me, a nice piece of history!

  • 1899!, this is a great piece of history!, good work for uploading this material!

  • This sounds like ass, but I bet while it was being recorded I bet it was a marvel of the time. The fact that it survived this far has got to be a testament to it's survivability. I'm sure a lot of things from 1899 are long forgotten never to be mentioned again. It's this and chimney sweeps we get from 1899.

  • @5thCharlie90 No, Lady Gaga "sounds like ass" to me, as you so eloquently put it.

  • haha the song is very cute :DD

  • nice

  • This is 1899 what do you expect

  • Interestingly, this is a song about using the telephone, a still relatively new technology at the time of the recording (1899).

  • It's not right unless it's sung by a tiny dancing alien that just burst out of John Hurt!

  • This is actually really good, I like this (full) version as much as I like Michigan J Frog's Version,

  • back when this came out peoples minds were blown at how awesome and clear this sounded

  • I didn't realize that this song is coon song. I guess Dave Chapelle was right when he said that the frog from the WB is a racist.

  • Hello?! .. My baby. Hello??... My honey.

  • in the unrestoured version you can hear a ring* in the background when the refrain begins

    is it only random??

  • Omg this is so freaking creepy!!! O.o It's over a 100 years old!

  • @anotherbeatlefreak i never really thought of it THAT way XD i simply listens to it because i like it

  • @anotherbeatlefreak Over 111 years old in fact!

  • Comment removed

  • I like to see a newer version that could me this sound cleaner.

  • This song isn't by Arthur Collins, it even says it on the recording, its sung by him. However it's composer is Joe Howard. Thought I would just share that with you all.

  • @hayleyjokerlong yeah i know it dosent make any sense like when people call a song sung by ray charles a ray charles song they should call it the name of the guy that wrote it

  • Say what you will but this guy was swimming in ass around the turn of the last century.

  • @KrazyKommieKiller Bravo. I award you 4 internets.

  • I think it's funny that youtube thinks this song was released in 2002 LOL

  • i find it hilarious that this clip is from 1899 and then people are talking about some dancing frog XD

  • well what would that fricken that frog would sing if this guy didn''t do it USE YOUR HEADS THIS IS A GREAT SONG!

  • This tune is a jewell. Bravisimooo.

  • This is so cool. What a great recording.

  • This is pretty nice.... told the guys of former days their gals BABY too?? Ha...this is funny!

  • Did he say pimp my ride?

  • Love this tune! I made a remix of this recording, its kinda funny :-) watch?v=41o2eFsiD-w

  • i think its weird that a recording from 1899 exists on youtube XD

  • @kallemick Pretty amazing, isn't it? Very cool.

  • MEJOR la canta la FROG de warner bros. jajajajajaja

  • Could this be the oldest recording of this song?

  • @Eddy2730 pretty sure this is the original recording, yes.

  • "What the hell-oh!"

  • @Shinmeiryu good one XD

  • @Shinmeiryu haha bout to say the SAME thing.

  • i love every imperfection in this song, every scratch is just character. It makes me feel as if i'm in 2 centures ago and escaped from modern formalities of the disgusting pop culture.

  • AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!! *Alien climbs out* Oh no, not again!

  • this reminds me of "space balls" for some reason.......

  • @kallemick The alien at the bar sings hello my baby when he pops out of the guys chest.

  • oh im very surprised this song is like a hundred years old! Thanks for posting this :) got a kick out of it

  • Might be true, but that's because this song was produced in 1899, not he 1960's

  • The cartoon singing frog is better version. Anyway thnks posting this song.

  • Your Welcome for the posting.

  • This just doesn't sound right without a little frog dancing around in a tophat singing it.

  • @ferretyluv - Got that right! This guy sounds like he's getting ready to croak (pun intended). Still appreciate the post. It's fascinating - but I'll take Michigan J. Frog over Artie anytime!

  • haha i love dis song
