I saw "Odessa File" yesterday and heard this song for the first time in many years -- interesting and ironic to see that it was composed by Lloyd Webber & Rice. It was not a German song (just as "Edelweiss" was composed by Rodgers & Hammerstein and was not an Austrian folk tune). The spirit and the beauty of the song (thanks to Perry Como and the boys choir) at the start of the movie against the backdrop of the story -- 1963 post-war Germany -- leave a bittersweet taste and chilling effect.

Instead i live in a tiny terrace house in Nth London, with a dusting of snow on the pavement turned grey, dotted with dog crap, empty cans of special brew and take away chicken boxes. This is from "Odessa File" which I think came out in 1974 or 73(??) What an amazing song. I was in 7th grade and never forgot it, from first  time I heard it. Can't believe it didn't become a huge Christmas hit.

One of my favorite Christmas songs. Reminds me of the saddest Twilight Zone episode, The Cornfield, when the man at his birthday party played the Perry Como album he got from his wife for his birthday, and six year old Billy Mumy wished him to vanish into the cornfield for playing music which was forbidden by Billy.
