There is Dominoes pizzeria up some blocks, and a pizza hut about 3 miles from there, but i will never trade one slice of dickie Dee's for a pie from one the other ones. The fist time i tasted their pizza was in the mid 80's and i still go back :-)
I support businesses in Newark like Dickie Dee's that have stayed through the good times and the bad times. But I just don't eat like that anymore, it's unhealthy!
You have no idea how homesick this makes me. We could never really decide between Dickie Dees and Jimmy Buffs, but there was always a Dickie Dees close by, especially on the way to Seton Hall Prep!
I was by there for the past 2 years while up in Jersey on vacation. They are either closed down or they are rarely open. Nobody ever answers the phone and it's buttoned up with metal on the doors and windows. It's in a pretty bad neighborhood. I love Italian Hot Dogs but had to settle for JJ's down in the park. I love Jersey food. Living in Hilton Head, italian food is sub standard, unless I cook it myself.
I grew up in Bloomfield as a kid, My father worked for the Town of Bloomfield for 26 years. I remember getting theese on a summer day and taking them to the park and just hanging out with my family...I still come to Bloomfield to see old friends and when I do, every once in a while I go back to have a double with everything..brings me back...When my car is done for the bloomfield car show,in the spring I will go get one.. cant wait
there fucking good as hell i live in 5th street for 14 years and move to berkely ave for 6 years and they still around i love that place it's the place ever in nj
I have loved Dickie Dee's since I was a kid... and I got each of my kids their first Italian Hot Dog from there when they were young... anywhere else is a phoney... NOW my latest convert is from California and he LOVES Dickie Dee's like the rest of this Jersey crew. I hope and pray that you guys NEVER close!!!
Update, Sue's Luncheonette was next to Krug's Tavern, so it was 114-116 Wilson Ave.

Sue's Luncheonette was on Wilson a few doors down from Bill's Flying A ( later Getty )
gas station. From sattelite maps I'd estimate it to be between Napoleon St. and Ann St.
since the gas station is also gone but I see a lot where cars are parked on the corner.
Sue served fantastic Italian Hot Dogs till at least the mid 60's.

The original "Italian Style" hot dog started by Jimmy Buff on 9th st and 14th ave in Newark, NJ back in the 1932.

Jimmy Buff's in Kenilworth (on the Boulevard) is good too.

Back in '63 I was the first to order a double
"...with mustard on the bottom and ketchup on the top."
Wonder if Izzy still makes the pizzas.
What great memories.
