I'd say she was one of the many South of Miami that really didn't believe it was going to hit them. Remember the storms "projected" path had it expecting to hit land between Miami and Fort Lauderdale. Plus we had so many years of hurricane threats that turned out to be nothing. We as a community were definitely complacent when Andrew kicked our butts.
I'm lucky that I lived in North Broward with only minor tree damage. But I worked in Cutler Ridge and my job was destroyed.
"This is Tom Tucker with a special news report on Hurricane Andrew..Here's Ollie with our Blaccu-Weather report..how's the weather Ollie?" "BIG STORM! STAY INSIDE!" "Thank you Ollie, and now this!"
Both katrina and andrew were some of the worst hurricanes in the US. In terms of flooding, Katrina was worse but N.O. was long ignored in terms of advanced prep for a big hurricane
Andrew was awfully devastating as well but worse than katrina in terms of wind. You saw houses completely destroyed in dade county because of circular tornadic winds that occurred in the inner rings of the storm.
Both regions REALLY had poorly built homes at the time. Building codes were long ignored.
hey chrisz71 u idiot the eye of a hurricane doesn't have the strongest winds, it's outert northen walls do.i survived the storm ,i was in cuttler ridge "now cuttler bay" and it was scary as hell i was only16 and that was the scariest moment in my life i guess u had to be there. miami didn't get hit?? f.... u i lived for 2 months with no electricity u ignorant fu&*k u should move all your family here and get hit by a tornoda u imbecil
I know and respect that the experience of having lived through Hurricane Andrew can make us passionate. We can't ever forget it. But is it necessary to get hostile about it? I don't think so.
I just wanted to respectfully express that. And I THANK EVERYONE for sharing their expeiences and for asking questions!
The anniversary of the storm is this month. Lets remember the victims and celebrate the recovery and the lessons learned.
I do have more videos from that time and may post soon
The eye of the storm hit just South of Miami city limits, slamming Homestead and Florida City, Areas of South Dade County.
The static on the tape was not added, the station went off the air during the storm. I was watching and recording when it happened. I did leave that in when I transferred to my computer.
I rode out Andrew, in Homestead Fl. As my house flew apart...Andrew was a strong hurricane and those who think it wasn't....well you didn't ride it out in Homestead. I know for a fact what devistation was left behind. Don't joke about such a life changing event...
Ike is huge, 170 mile diameter hurricane force wind gusts, andrew was small only 30 mile diameter peak wind force at 150 plus, more like a big tornado than a hurricane, hurricanes do more damage with water (surge and driven rain) andrew was all wind, comparatively little rain. we call it a dry hurricane- buildings 100 years old in homestead, and up to kendall virtually every light pole, roof and walls and fences were gone. Not anything similar to all the prior miami and post hurricane ie: wilma.
You kids don't know anything about what you are talking about-Ike is big, now ashore, 115 mph winds with gusts 130=andrew, I lived there, was later proved to have 170 sustained and homestead airfore base anamomaters broke off at 235mph-the national hurrican centers instruments, 20 plus miles north of andrews eye wall, broke off at the 140 they first reported. There was a lot of cover up and butt covering going on, andrew went from tropical nothing to lever 5 in 2 days, so we got caught.
Katrina caused more damage because of the levees failing, Otherwise it would have been a bad hurricane, period. Keep in mind Andrew was a small storm, it packed 170 mph gusts, it hit a fairly unpopulated area and it was moving at 20 mph across florida? Imagine like many people commented, if it would have hit 10 or 20 miles north and it would have been moving slower? Katrina was no joke but intensity wise, Andrew was a stronger hurricane.
I will never forget hurricane andrew i was in with my parents in hialeah..but alot of my friends lost their homes in kendall and cutler ridge..it was the worst..the wind sound like hundreds of demons. God save us if another would come.
In terms of cost of damage and death yes. In terms of wind speed, no. Katrina was a Cat 3 (111-130 MPH) at landfall and Andrew was a Cat 5 (155+ MPH) Andrew was much stronger than Katrina at landfall. Andrew also hit a lower populated area. If Andrew would of came ashore right on Miami Beach, the results would of been a lot more devastating.
If Andrew had hit only 10 miles north, it still would be the costliest hurricane of all time. Miami dodged a bulllet with andrew. It could've been worse. Katrina wouldn't compare.
Not even close. Andrew was like an atomic bomb. Katrina was all water being pushed in and breaking through. Winds and power wise? Andrew was like living in a circular bombing range for 12 hours.
Who gives a shit? That is only because Katrina flooded a major city...and that is it. If Andrew had hit 20 miles further north Miami would still be re-building.
Also, Katrina was much bigger in diameter than Andrew. Andrew was a very small hurricane. However, Andrew was much more powerful than Katrina. The levees in N.O. only broke b/c the city's leaders did nothing to keep them in good condition.
Gustav is 3x the size of Andrew, and now has sustained winds higher than those that were reported in Andrew before Andrew reached land. 10 years after Andrew, the NWS decided that Andrew really had 155 mph winds. Gustav already has sustained 150mph winds, with higher gusts over an area that makes Andrew look puny. Andrew arrived at low tide, so minimal storm surge, essentially creating a 40 mile wide tornado swath..Gustav is going to be twice as large with equal winds and double the surge.
u shouldnt talk before shit happens gustav was 145 mph and look at it now they sayin its nothin but 115 mph now trust me if u lived through andrew u woudnt be sayin that
1. Yep, NOLA dodged the bullet because Gustav dropped to Cat 2 right before landfall. Lucky, lucky (so far).
2. I went through Andrew, you colossal dumbass, that's why I posted the comment. Andrew was only rated at Cat 4 when it hit, but later determined to have been Cat 5. Gustav was predicted to only go to Cat 3, but spun up to strong Cat 4, and was 3x as wide as Andrew. NOLA totally lucked out this time (so far).
The May 3rd, 1999 F5 tornado that hit Bridge Creek and Moore, Oklahoma, just south of OKC had winds MUCH stronger than Hurricane Andrew, the DOW (Doppler on Wheels) radar recorded a wind speed of 318 mph!!!
I am not saying, though, that Hurricane Andrew was insignificant by any stretch of the imagination. Good thing that the center of the storm didn't make a direct hit on downtown Miami.
Ok I just wanted to make sure you weren't downplaying the tragedy it was. For sure it was a good thing that the eye didn't hit Miami. Can you imagine?? What a disaster that would have been...
the radar wouldnt have been there if there were any winds near 318mph.. and a tornado is only a couple of minutes of wind, a Hurricane is from hours to days of constant sustained winds..
Damn.. i lived in Homestead on Avacado as well... small world. that place was a fuckin warzone.. it was completely flat... i dont know how we survived it. i was 11 years old then
I have been a weather hobbyist ever since I was little. I lived in Homestead in 1992 - off of 296th street (Avocado Drive). I was three then, my dad held my closet door closed as Andrew's fury raged outside. A sabal palm nearly totaled my Mom's old Camaro (really freaky thing about that, two trees fell on both sides of the car)
I've been scowering the internet for videos like these, and I wish I had that old WTVJ Andrew video. Thanks for uploading this though!
the lady talking on the phone talks about hearing a low rumbling noice like a train... she was prolly hearing a tornado...she was on 88th and 147...i was at 88th and 127th
When Andrew happened, I lived in Pompano Beach west of I-95. We had no power outage in my neighborhood but we had some flooding which was normal for many heavy rain storms. Never lost cable TV or phone service either. We also had trees down and some building damage in the neighborhood. East of US-1 suffered more power outages and building damages as they were closer to the beach.
I've been looking for stuff like this- as I was in kindergarten in Arkansas (where I still am) but I was born in Florida, so this was something to me. I appreciate it so much for posting this- and if you have more weather stuff (Opal, etc) post it please! I wish I could post Tornado stuff on here- 3 days in particular stick in my mind.
My mom's friend has an apartment in Pompano. I don't think she had troubles other than what you mentioned. Of all the video I have seen about Andrew, most have been of Bryan Norcross, of WTVJ channel 4/WFOR CBS 4. Never seen any from PLG.
Andrew was a nightmare........none of us slept that night.......it felt like a freight train rolling outside our house. :(

So it didn't hit Miami at all? I mean, I see the radar and all, and the eye didn't hit it, but wouldn't you say that Andrew hit Miami?
I love the ending of the video- the static was a nice touch if added, and if not- it was just freaky.
