Why do people keep thinking Roland was a great Analog Synthesizer company??? In fact they werent!! They were forced to use Analog technology on their early synths because that is what was common at the time. Not because they love analog. In fact Roland's philosophy then and now is for REALISM. The Original Jupiter 8 was supposed to sound acoustic and realistic, but analog technology did not work. Analog sounds non-natural. Thats why musicians liked it. Not because of Roland's actual philosophy.
Roland is aware that people want analog so they stole the legendary name of Jupi8 and put it on a sample player...disgusting! I don't get it, Roland was so great in the analog field so they have the knowledge...but they give us digital crap instead; I loved earlier Roland products so I'll keep my JD990.
Is this supposed to be in the same league as the Jupiter 8...? The one from 1981? (I really don't know) But if it is, it's a disgrace. Digital synths are just so weak in sound compared to the original analogue synths and this is a perfect example, this doesn't even deserve to be called Saturn 80. I expect to be blown away by a Jupiter, and this is just like all the digital midi synths, all the effects sound weak. You can't even tweak them enough to make them have that power. This is sad.
Sorry Roland, but that's no Jupiter. That's one of your VIRTUAL SYNTHESIS synths. Very cool, but NOT a Jupiter. Unless you dig out your old analog ICs again, OR you create a very very VERY true (and no novelties) virtual creation, then and only then would it be cool to call something Jupiter. Like, Jupiter Redux for a digital version. Jupiter 80 just somehow deserves to be a MONSTER version of the original. TRUE to the bone, only bigger and badder. Not necessarily BROADER.
@TheMindOfPat Hell, I lost respect for Roland after the V-synth XT when everything they started to pump out was just rehash after retreaded rehash. Nothing innovative. I LOVE the V-synth XT, but they're so much like Yamaha and Korg - Trinity, Triton, R3, Radias, Oasys...it all gets to be a bit 'yawnnnn' after a while. Cool here, cool there, but nothing mindblowingly innovative or like Effffff-YEAH! That's a return to the iconic BEAST! Nope...
Now to get some speakers that do this thing justice. I owned a Jupiter 8. The Manual was about 16 pages. So easy to get into. Sold it after I picked up my Ensoniq ESQ1 and finding out just how much music I was creating with those 8 tracks and a few outboard racks. Of course I needed the dough...and it wasn't midi. I spent my last days with it recording lots of crazy sounds to have. I say my Ensoniq because I still have it...It's one of the very early models...all metal case.

it's surely a good synth, but to call it "Jupiter" is hilarious. It's like Moog Music would bring out a digital workstation called Memorymoog-20. Who the hell at Roland had that idea??
Honestly, I thought Jupi 80 had an analog filter or something like on my Ensoniq SQ 80...it's horrible that they didn't listen to the analog-thirsty people. Even Korg Kronos failed by not having analog filters like in their Monotribe...they should have put in SOME analog filters for better sound...my Ensoniq SQ 80 blows these monsters away... :-)
I am boycotting all Roland products until they give me what I want. I am the customer, if I wanted acoustic sounds I would buy a fantom or Vsynth. This sucks!
I think it will be a very nice synthesizer (for live use). The Jupiter 8 is/was very good, but it's the past. We'll see what the 80 is really worth when the first units are in the stores, instead of bashing it before we have even touched one.
The Jupiter is back doing what it did first time around bringing the best sounds and technology Roland has to offer. So many people do not understand what The Jupiter name is about and expect a analog synth from the 80's. while they do sound nice anologlimits what the machine can do in today's world of music. Maybe the next Jupiter will be a hybrid so we get the best of both anolg and digital.
How the mighty have fallen. Whilst people are screaming out for affordabl analog synths Rpland continue churning out expensive digital crap. Roland, get new management, those in charge have lost the plot.
@harrymerchant456 then hit them in their pocket, stop buying Roland stuff. There are quite a few analog alternatives out there: DSI, Alesis, Moog, etc.
@Keybern I do. The last piece of Roland kit I purchased was years ago (about ten). Its not that Im intentionally boycotting them. They just haven't made anything for years that has been worthy of my attention. What a shame they rape their heritage and call this a Jupiter. I mean its not the worst synth or anything but just a great shame the company continue their analog modelling crap. Their obsessed with modelling they very stuff they can actually make for real. Weird huh..
I think it would be neat if they just let us make our own sounds in terms of sine driven an internal polynomial, with respect to time of the key push.
I hate Elitists. Seriously, can't you people just look for the good side of stuff? I think it sounds great. If you hate it, make your own synth or something.
I hate Elitists. Seriously, can't you people just look for the good side of stuff? I think it sounds great. If you hate it, make your own synth or somthing.
Analogue synthesis shouldn't try to duplicate "natural" sounding instruments. That's the whole reason it's called analogue. When I hear "analogue" I think Moog, Oberheim, Jupiter 8, Juno 60, etc. When I hear "digital" I think Korg Triton, DX7, Motif, DW8000, Synclavier, Fairlight, etc. Please Roland go back to the analogue roots...there's GOT to be a way to manufacture an analogue synth inexpensively....
While I appreciate the gesture, it's these plethora of digital hybrids that Roland is chunking out that continue to make people pay top dollar for the original Jupiter 8's on Ebay. And it sucks, because only 2000 were made. PLEASE ROLAND make AT LEAST a controller that LOOKS like the JP8 so that we can control the Jupiter 8V software from Arturia!!
Wow - Roland has no idea what "Jupiter" means - it's just a name to exploit. Just another VA, missing the most important part of the Jupiter 8 - the analog SOUND.
Looks like a Roland V-synth with some "Jupiter" looking cosmetics. Way to go Roland. For $3500 (the going price for this insult to the "Jupiter" name) I can get a Dave Smith Prophet 08 AND a Moog Little Phatty! I'm not sure which market Roland is trying to cater to here, since synth players have so many choice for real analog & much better virtual analog synths elsewhere. Oh wait I already know the answer...check out the perm-mullet guys doing the roland guitar demos elsewhere on youtube...
You either make a REAL analogue synth and call it a Jupiter 80 or manufacture this pile of cheap looking rubbish instead. Sounds very bad to my ears and the only closeness to the ogriginal is the cosmetics on the panels. Apart from similar looks here and there this junk is no match for even the most lame monosynth where analogue is concerned. Roland has lost it...Maybe they should go back to the days of when they 'Designed The Future'.
I don't think they should have called it a Jupiter 80. The original is an iconic synth, it's like some pub band calling themselves "The Beatles" just so that they will get noticed. I've no doubt this is a superb new synth in it's own right, but they should have given it another name, perhaps naming it after another planet, like Saturn perhaps, so it's in that vein but not quite the same. Just my thought !!!
@neonelectro ...this is a great instrument and is NOT a Fantom X8 with a colour scheme.....i do however like your idea of calling it a SATURN 8. that would have been a much better way to market this synth without pissing off all the Zealots out there who worship at the alter of the GREAT ANALOG GOD....JUPITER. i dont understand RELIGION but reading all this negative stuff reminds me of how religion finds root....even SYNTHS have a RELIGION-DOGMA.
@neonelectro The saturn did exist in the 80's. Was not legendary, but still a good analog synth. I hope Roland did not catch your post, I dont want them to make a "new saturn".
After reading alot of different comments I can't help to think of how this discussion will be in 20-50 years when the developement has gotten even further ahead in the music evolution. At that time Roland may release the holographic Jupiter 8 million zillions, and people would say that it was better with the Jupiter 80 and the V-synth. I wonder if people will ever be able to accept new things. or stick will they stick with 'the old one is the best' line.
@DJKickstarter it just depends when the new stuff is finally as good as the old stuff. There is some good new things out there, but there is alot of crap coming out from the major manufacturers still. The old stuff was built ALOT better than some of this new stuff. Something New that is actually cool imo is The DSI Tempest, its the best of both worlds i believe.
I agree this is crap...I dont like what Roland is doing re-using names for synths that are nothing like the originals...build another analog synth for god's sake...DSI and many others are still doing it. From my experience, Roland is terrible at virtualizing analog so maybe they should stick with what they are good at
@ruiner54 The guys over at Roland told us that this was the first synth they were comfortable to call "Jupiter" again. They feel, that this will be it.
@delamartv I think you misunderstood what I was saying. I was referring to Roland's use of names derived from classic analog synths: juno 60, 106 etc. and now the juno-d, juno-g; the sh-101 and now the sh-201 and finally the original jupiter line and now this. My point is that they are just releasing digital synths with sampling and 'analog modeling'. My first true synth was the sh-201 and I was terribly disappointed....The Gaia is another example. Why dont Roland make analog again like DSI?
@ruiner54 ah, okay, now I get it. Well, I think building analogue might be a lot more expensive than digital. Someone said it before here...in 20 years we might be looking back to this and call it a classic and wonder why they build that new things :)
Eveyone keeps talking how today a replica of Jupiter 8 would be north of $10K.. Let me tell you from experience. In 80's a transistor was a dollar, today we stuff millions of them on a chip and sell them for 30 bucks or less. Components are cheaper wether they are active or passive, they cost much less than in 80's so the argument of what would it cost today and no one would buy it are misguided. If one wanted an exact copy of Jupiter 8 today in parts $400 plus chassis.
I think it's a cheap way to sell a not so unique synth as is the JP4 & JP8. I will never sell my JP4 not for 8 of these! For what they're charging for one of these you could buy a REAL Jupiter 8 & have change! Buy an XP-50 for those pipe organs & other bread & butter sounds (£250 or less) This is a big flop if you ask me.
eigendlich doch eher peinlich für roland was die da als jupiter verkaufen wolle. oder ? das einzige jupiter mäßige was mich an einen jupiter denken läßt ist das aussehen...schade roland, den noch gute demo..danke
@adrianh63 I hadn't too much time to play with the Roland Jupiter 80, but I think the sounds will be fine. This synth looks promising to me and we'll see what it really has to offer when it is ready to ship. This one wasn't ready yet.
why is it always with new synth's they demo the (my opinion) the crappy standard sounds and not the great leads, basses and screeches like used in dance music. ????
Roland just needs to re evaluate the direction its headed in. Ok fine, have a couple of flagship workstation....but please dont make 101 different versions of the same thing. Im sorry but most of us dont see the differences between the products anymore. Ambiguity puts people off, gives them too much to think about - you cant be impulsive if you've got 101 different options.
Analog is simple, it does what it says on the tin. Its easy to dinstinguish against digital products. End of story.
At the very least why can't it have a virtual analog Jupiter-8 engine/mode - kinda like an Arturia Jupiter-8V soft synth. I know it's NOT a jupiter-8...but c'mon it's $3,500 give us something different roland!!!
A+ it looks great, just like a 2nd gen Jupiter should look like. But wheres the synthesizer capabilities??? Show off the virtual analog engine (if it really exists), FM synthesis or something. I understand Roland not wanting to go with a true analog synth, it's 2011 not 1981. But c'mon Piano, guitar, etc sounds should not be on a Jupiter!!!
I've been a big Roland fan for years.., but wow! What the hell is Roland thinking! Why did they take this direction with something as iconic as the Jupiter line.?.? This synth should be 100% analogue! The demand for analogue synths is growing fast these days. It's clear the need for them is there. Roland could make a freakin killing in the analogue market if they produce a full analogue Jupiter 80.
@squeakD You have completely misunderstood Roland's goals for the original Jupiter and the latest model. It was NOT to create a super analog synth. They wanted to recreate acoustic sounds. The market for analog is not growing. It has been dying for years as observed by the NUMEROUS times analog synths are quickly resold. The most successful synth makers know this and refuse to fall into bankruptcy like so many others have done over the years due to their narrow focus on analog.
@TomZentra On the other hand, how do you explain the fact that moog had produced the minimoog for nearly 30 years and has recently issued the minimoog voyager XL. not to mention the second generation of the little phatty? According to your assessment Dave Smith Instruments would have ceased to exist by now. There is still a market for old school analogue synths.
@dudewhosaysarrh Roland will never produce a Jupiter 8 clone, as explained in current videos on youtube. Moog Music and DSI began to release next generation analog synth years ago. Moog released the Voyager when interest in analog was high. Any retailer will tell you that interest in the Voyager is dead. Hence the release of the Phatty and the limited production of the XL, which is destined to be a sales flop. Not to mention the end of the A6, whose sales had been lagging for years.
Reading your comments, makes me think you work for Roland. I accept I could be wrong :)
Alesis reinvigorated the analog synth market with the A6. How many analog polysynths do you know of that were produced for 10 years? Can you think of any Roland products with a 10 yr production run? The A6 was ultimately discontinued because certain key parts became impossible to manufacture and they also had an issue in European Union lead compliance regulation.
Thanks to Alesis we now see Moog, DSI, Tom Oberheim + many other smaller synth manufactures making great sounding analog gear. Why do you think Korg are getting back in on the act? They see a market outthere, they see an opportunity - the monotron and monotribe are market testers - you know that.
Its quite reasonable to see Moog diversify into a range of products and beleive me, there are plenty of people queued up to buy their $8k poly within the next 5yrs.
What your saying doesnt make sense to me or most other JP8 users....
The Roland engineers 'really' wanted to make the Jupiter 8 capable of realistic acoustic sounds? So thats why they equipped it with standard ADSR envelope generators, standard analog oscilator waveforms such as sawtooth, triangle and pulse. They even equipped it with 1 LFO...which was rather nice but alas it could only be routed to pitch/volume/filter.
@Guyforkz absolutely what I was thinking. I think the JD-990 was superb and was in a way a natural progression after the Jupiter range of the 80's. This was back in day when Roland were pioneers though. They have totally lost the plot with this contraption. They should call it "SuperNatural" rather than Jupiter 80.
Genau !! ... Ziehmlich gut !! -- JA !! Keinen kleinen Einduck !! -- PAUL -- Alles liebe aus den USA. SUPER VOLL STARK ist Jupiter 80 !! -- bitte ein video ohne woerte -- Direct connect !! Bitte dieses VIDEO.... besser machen !! Ich bin ein Besser Wisser !! Uhm... Man, you messed up the Jupiter 80 !!
IDIOT ?! ... The output can't come from a microphone. DUH !! dummy. -- Sounded like CRAP. I still have no idea what the true instrument sounds like through my Sennheiser headphones. I am SPEECHLESS. Duh. DUH seems to be my only word ! You will need to become more sensitive to people like me... I hear a MALL.
What a piece of crap. Roland are making ANOTHER workstation clone? With the JUPITER brand? What a joke. Fire their marketing people and get out in the real world.
If you are complaining about how it is not analog then you are an Idiot... I don't want a new analog Jupiter 8 it to me would ruin the one of a kind sound that makes the Jupiter 8 better than any other synth to this day.
I find it hugely amusing people moaning about this not being a cheap reissue of a 30 year old synth, just because of the model-name. Same people herald Korg as geniusses over the monotribe. Roland tries to push the boundaries of what is possible with synth-technology. Korg sits on their ass and repackage some old circuitry - without MIDI, beacuse we cant have it work together with other similar gear (it might get too useful). It's all about what can be done, and there digital beat analogue now.
@MarctheDarc well, on principle i have nothing against VA, i own three VAs, two of them Rolands, but if i had 3000 buucks to blow on a synth, it would be an anolugue like the A6 Andromeda. BTW sometimes people just want the old circuitry back. When Korg issued the monotron it was a,huge success not because it hat an immensely flexible engine but because of that brutal MS 20 filter.
@dwightddddd ,,,,Phat Synth Brass? who in the world needs that tired old SYNTH BRASS JUPITER SOUND? are you in a 1980s Tribute band? lord! STOP IT!!!! if you want a Jupiter ANALOG Then go to the web and FIND ONE...BUY AN ANALOG! its a NAME not a RELIC
@dwightddddd yes why didn't they just call it something totally different, like Neptune or Saturn, so at least it would be in line with a BIG sound hence the Big Planet Name, but with no real connection to the Jupiter so they could make a new classic.
The last years, yoland has produced romplers shit, nothing to do with a real Synth, until they produced the roland sh-01 gaia Synth, the rest of the last productions are waste for me, like the juno di, juno g , and all the rest. There are all romplers.

DJmixmastermicro 5 months ago

Not necessarily BROADER.
wetbobo 6 months ago
I agree, it's an insult to call a mostly-knobless virtual analog "Jupiter" anything. If anything I think I LOST respect for Roland over this.
Lots of people still build op-amps, guys -- build us an analog. :)
TheMindOfPat 6 months ago 2
@TheMindOfPat Hell, I lost respect for Roland after the V-synth XT when everything they started to pump out was just rehash after retreaded rehash. Nothing innovative. I LOVE the V-synth XT, but they're so much like Yamaha and Korg - Trinity, Triton, R3, Radias, Oasys...it all gets to be a bit 'yawnnnn' after a while. Cool here, cool there, but nothing mindblowingly innovative or like Effffff-YEAH! That's a return to the iconic BEAST! Nope...

What is that, a laptop screen? They should've name it Phantom-as instead of Jupiter!

Weird huh..

Oh wait I already know the answer...check out the perm-mullet guys doing the roland guitar demos elsewhere on youtube...
strangerhythm 9 months ago

Just my thought !!!
neonelectro 9 months ago 29
@neonelectro that could have been a really good idea...
delamartv 9 months ago
@neonelectro ...this is a great instrument and is NOT a Fantom X8 with a colour scheme.....i do however like your idea of calling it a SATURN 8. that would have been a much better way to market this synth without pissing off all the Zealots out there who worship at the alter of the GREAT ANALOG GOD....JUPITER. i dont understand RELIGION but reading all this negative stuff reminds me of how religion finds root....even SYNTHS have a RELIGION-DOGMA.

dwightddddd 9 months ago
@neonelectro The saturn did exist in the 80's. Was not legendary, but still a good analog synth. I hope Roland did not catch your post, I dont want them to make a "new saturn".
Karmaneoeric 9 months ago
After reading alot of different comments I can't help to think of how this discussion will be in 20-50 years when the developement has gotten even further ahead in the music evolution. At that time Roland may release the holographic Jupiter 8 million zillions, and people would say that it was better with the Jupiter 80 and the V-synth. I wonder if people will ever be able to accept new things. or stick will they stick with 'the old one is the best' line.
DJKickstarter 10 months ago
@DJKickstarter it just depends when the new stuff is finally as good as the old stuff. There is some good new things out there, but there is alot of crap coming out from the major manufacturers still. The old stuff was built ALOT better than some of this new stuff. Something New that is actually cool imo is The DSI Tempest, its the best of both worlds i believe.
ElasticMinds 9 months ago
I agree this is crap...I dont like what Roland is doing re-using names for synths that are nothing like the originals...build another analog synth for god's sake...DSI and many others are still doing it. From my experience, Roland is terrible at virtualizing analog so maybe they should stick with what they are good at
ruiner54 10 months ago 2
@ruiner54 The guys over at Roland told us that this was the first synth they were comfortable to call "Jupiter" again. They feel, that this will be it.
delamartv 10 months ago
@delamartv I think you misunderstood what I was saying. I was referring to Roland's use of names derived from classic analog synths: juno 60, 106 etc. and now the juno-d, juno-g; the sh-101 and now the sh-201 and finally the original jupiter line and now this. My point is that they are just releasing digital synths with sampling and 'analog modeling'. My first true synth was the sh-201 and I was terribly disappointed....The Gaia is another example. Why dont Roland make analog again like DSI?
ruiner54 10 months ago
@ruiner54 ah, okay, now I get it. Well, I think building analogue might be a lot more expensive than digital. Someone said it before here...in 20 years we might be looking back to this and call it a classic and wonder why they build that new things :)

duperdude25 10 months ago 2
Eveyone keeps talking how today a replica of Jupiter 8 would be north of $10K.. Let me tell you from experience. In 80's a transistor was a dollar, today we stuff millions of them on a chip and sell them for 30 bucks or less. Components are cheaper wether they are active or passive, they cost much less than in 80's so the argument of what would it cost today and no one would buy it are misguided. If one wanted an exact copy of Jupiter 8 today in parts $400 plus chassis.
duperdude25 10 months ago
I wished my Juno-6 could do a supernatural flute like that!
Koeniwoeni 10 months ago
I think it's a cheap way to sell a not so unique synth as is the JP4 & JP8. I will never sell my JP4 not for 8 of these! For what they're charging for one of these you could buy a REAL Jupiter 8 & have change! Buy an XP-50 for those pipe organs & other bread & butter sounds (£250 or less) This is a big flop if you ask me.

End of story.

dana4261 10 months ago
A+ it looks great, just like a 2nd gen Jupiter should look like. But wheres the synthesizer capabilities??? Show off the virtual analog engine (if it really exists), FM synthesis or something. Ferdiphone 10 months ago
I've been a big Roland fan for years.., but wow! What the hell is Roland thinking! Why did they take this direction with something as iconic as the Jupiter line.?.? This synth should be 100% analogue! The demand for analogue synths is growing fast these days. It's clear the need for them is there. Roland could make a freakin killing in the analogue market if they produce a full analogue Jupiter 80.
squeakD 10 months ago
@squeakD You have completely misunderstood Roland's goals for the original Jupiter and the latest model. It was NOT to create a super analog synth. They wanted to recreate acoustic sounds. The market for analog is not growing. It has been dying for years as observed by the NUMEROUS times analog synths are quickly resold. The most successful synth makers know this and refuse to fall into bankruptcy like so many others have done over the years due to their narrow focus on analog.
TomZentra 10 months ago
@TomZentra On the other hand, how do you explain the fact that moog had produced the minimoog for nearly 30 years and has recently issued the minimoog voyager XL. not to mention the second generation of the little phatty? According to your assessment Dave Smith Instruments would have ceased to exist by now. There is still a market for old school analogue synths.
dudewhosaysarrh 10 months ago
@dudewhosaysarrh Roland will never produce a Jupiter 8 clone, as explained in current videos on youtube. Moog Music and DSI began to release next generation analog synth years ago. Moog released the Voyager when interest in analog was high. Any retailer will tell you that interest in the Voyager is dead. Hence the release of the Phatty and the limited production of the XL, which is destined to be a sales flop. Not to mention the end of the A6, whose sales had been lagging for years.
TomZentra 10 months ago
@TomZentra
DIGITALSCREAMS 10 months ago
@DIGITALSCREAMS
DIGITALSCREAMS 10 months ago
@DIGITALSCREAMS I never have had any affiliation with Roland or any synth company. We disagree on the A6 points. Enough said.
TomZentra 10 months ago
@TomZentra
This is why I dont buy into the bullshit.
DIGITALSCREAMS 10 months ago

@Guyforkz absolutely what I was thinking. I think the JD-990 was superb and was in a way a natural progression after the Jupiter range of the 80's. dwightddddd 10 months ago
If you are complaining about how it is not analog then you are an Idiot... I don't want a new analog Jupiter 8 it to me would ruin the one of a kind sound that makes the Jupiter 8 better than any other synth to this day.
isaacrife08 10 months ago
I find it hugely amusing people moaning about this not being a cheap reissue of a 30 year old synth, just because of the model-name. Same people herald Korg as geniusses over the monotribe. Roland tries to push the boundaries of what is possible with synth-technology. Korg sits on their ass and repackage some old circuitry - without MIDI, beacuse we cant have it work together with other similar gear (it might get too useful). It's all about what can be done, and there digital beat analogue now.
MarctheDarc 10 months ago
@MarctheDarc well, on principle i have nothing against VA, i own three VAs, two of them Rolands, but if i had 3000 buucks to blow on a synth, it would be an anolugue like the A6 Andromeda. BTW sometimes people just want the old circuitry back. When Korg issued the monotron it was a,huge success not because it hat an immensely flexible engine but because of that brutal MS 20 filter.
dudewhosaysarrh 10 months ago

LesFarrington 9 months ago
@dwightddddd yes why didn't they just call it something totally different, like Neptune or Saturn, so at least it would be in line with a BIG sound hence the Big Planet Name, but with no real connection to the Jupiter so they could make a new classic.
