It is taken from the mother the day of or the day after birth. If the cow is female she is kept to become a dairy cow too, if the cow is male, he is sent to become veal. There is no such thing as a friendly dairy farm.

Factory Farms are the farms referred to, where a cow is lucky to live to the age of 5. Some farms are not factory farms, and they may choose to keep cows longer. But with all factories, profit is to be maximized and cows can only stay constantly pregnant and in the prime of milk production for a short while-after that, milk and profit decline which means the cow dies. You can even Google the term Factory Farm and find basically the same info I've given you.

They should get a meadow to graze, a social environment the way they would live in the wild, and when it's time to kill them, it should be done in the most humane way possible.
