@WalterLiddy I think it was to test if you had any ruptures or hernias in the pelvic floor.  If you coughed it would come through and would be felt as a knot or bulge in the region of your scrotum. I don't know if they still do it or not. But they did at one time.

Someone in the props department didn't do their homework; latex gloves dissolve in vaseline so the two are never used together. Same goes for condoms (useful hint).
