I bet the Romulans thought they were such hot shit when they decloaked. I wouldve loved to see the look on the Romulan officers face when he got the reading 4 Klingon Birds of Prey were decloaking
I know it was great writing/negotiation or whatever, but did anyone else just go 'AWWW! I wanted to see a Federation-Romulan-Klingon space battle!! D:
@etetepete Tomalak is woefully underused, he appears in only four episodes, including this one. Prior to this he appears in The Enemy, after this he appears in Future Imperfect and All Good Things, the finale. Which he deserved to be in, because he's one of the most memorable characters from TNG.
@CrimsonMystery Haha, I never forgot, truly I never did. I just never got around to it, admittedly over the course of 4 years I probably should have. Next year I'll do it. (No in all seriousness I'll put the whole scene up, I can't do it right this second, but today or tomorrow.)
I love how the creators of TNG were able to give the Klingons and the Romulans their own musical scores. The Klingon theme gave the idea of a warlike race, who live for battle and honor. The Romulan musical score gives off the impression of the Romulans as a people who are generally not to be trusted, dangerous, decietful, skulking around the place in their cloaked ships ready to ambush you. Simply brilliant!! :D
The plot that Klingons restarted hostilites with the Federation is bullshit. TNG laid the groundwork for intelligent and peaceful cultural exchange. To replace that with war is just cynical and naive.
@subaruscotty Star Trek Online is awful on so many levels, including the fact that the Klingons got all in the Federation's face - which at least in DS9 made sense, as Martok was a shapeshifter and was corrupting the Empire, and Gowron was a fool most of the time, in STO it was brainless hostility. I'd like to have seen what Perpetual Entertainment would have done with Trek on their original MMO, rather than Craptic. (I'll stop or I'll just turn into a bubbling hate machine.)
@CaptainTrekkie Too bad Perpetual spent 4 years masturbating and didn't even make a playable Alpha of STO. Much less a Beta or a release. Don't think anyone would've done anything stellar making a game from scratch (bear in mind that the IP & some Art is all Cryptic bought. No code) in 24 months.
@MasterofSpiders This is true, at the same time a lot of stuff back then they just copy-pasted from Champions Online. If you play CO and then STO the ground combat is the same, awfully buggy, delayed and unresponsive gameplay. It's not like they built new code from the ground up, if they did they genuinely hide it well. You are 100% correct in that Perpetual would probably have made sod all that amounted to anything, but wow is Cryptic's game bad. It's beyond bad, it's abhorrent
@CaptainTrekkie Actually, the plot in STO makes pretty good sense. The war started because the Klingons thought the Federation was controlled by Species 8472/Undine infiltrators - which in that period was what anyone thought about everyone else. And it keeps going because one high-up idiot is afraid of his power base - which sounds pretty klingon to me (Chang, anyone?).
Plus the fact that it was all orchestrated to reach precisely this outcome - Feds and Klingons at war.
@Draco1985m Whilst I know you're right, I fear I am too biased against the game to think rationally about this. I really hated the execution of that idea, even though as you say it is a typically Klingon thing to do, they are far from angels. It just didn't feel right, Martok being killed in dishonourable combat, and Worf or other Klingons not doing anything to take revenge, and letting the new guy ascend as Chancellor, it just feels underdone is all. Like I say though, biased.
@Sefaril Thankyou for the correction. I had to search for your comment because it has become embedded in spam flags. I've unflagged it as I appreciate being corrected for the future, so thanks.
So apparently the "extend appreciation of the Federation and personal gratitude" button is on the same console as the weapons arrays. Wouldn't want to get those mixed up.
Well. It is interesting. From all of the information I can find it seems that the Galaxy class starship and D'deridex class warbird had similar levels of armament with a small edge going to the romulans. Keep in mind that there were 2 romulan warbirds which of course would easily overwhelm one galaxy class starship. Even though they are comparatively weak it is easy to see that half dozen klingon birds of prey would even the score considerably.
Am I in the minority in thinking that the Enterprise would not have been destroyed, despite Tomalak's words, because the Romulans were outnumbered 4-2?
I think if the Romulans concentrated their fire on the Enterprise, they might have been able to destroy her. The Birds of Prey would have fried them seconds later, though.
@Archedgar Don't forget it's not just about pure technical power. Yes, Romulan Warbirds are no joke, but neither is the Enterprise. The Klingons birth of prey may not be very strong defensively, but they pack a fair punch offensively. If all six of them and the Enterprise open fire on one Warbird, they can at the very least disable it. Simply put.. it's not a clear cut fight as to who would win.
Ugh, more reminders of the TNG producers over-using the Bird of Prey model. Seriously, look at the Klingon ships behind the Romulan warbirds. They are way too big.
@chrismc410 I know this, but it's never made any sense. It's the same model shot in two different scales. It's a very weak excuse for a series which had producers who were too cheap to make some really cool shows.
@chrismc410 Well, that's just the excuse for a limited budget. They didn't have the means to build a new Klingon ship until the 4th season, so they were forced to reuse what was already built (which is why in TNG the Federation fleet consists of Excelsiors, Oberths, and Miranda variants) I hope they fix this on the upcoming Blu-Ray releases, but I kinda doubt they will.
I what every star trek episode I can maybe all of then a million times over and this is by far the best one the music and acting by tomolok and Picard is amazing good stuff
Abdreas Katsulas had an impressive range of facial movements he could make without moving the muscles around his eyes at all. Watch from 0:35 to 0:45 close and you'll see what I mean.
Years later at the Joint Race Retired Ship Commander Home, Picard outsmarted Tomalak for the final time in what became known as the "Baked Custard Maneuver".
Scenes like this remind me of just how awesome TNG was. By far the best of all the Star Trek series. (And this is coming from someone who religiously watched TOS in repeats in the 80s, before TNG debuted.)
@SawdustProductions Isn't it just fantastic. I always thought his work in Best of Both Worlds, with the borg stinger as some of the best in music done for a television series. Only recently was his work properly released in the form of the Ron Jones Project, I understand it to be a massive collection of his work but I can't say if it is every single piece. Although it does span 14 discs according to amazon.
@SawdustProductions That same Romulan theme musical score seemed oddly duplicated when Simba confronts Scar towards the end of Lion King. I kept waiting for Romulan War Birds to decloak.
Tomalak always looks forward to his next meeting with Picard. He'd drown him in a bucket of Romulan Ale if he could but he is always so polite and courteous. I guess all Romulans are gentlemen.
Little bitch Tomalak thought he was the shit crusing by with his homeboys until Picard gang showed up and then he ran away like the bitch that he was.
I still absolutely love the fact we're allies with the Klingons after being the main villains of TOS and many movies. Risky move, that I think paid off.
@Uridien Gene Roddenbury believed that there is no such thing as an entire race of people that are all bad. Just as certain peoples or nations might be our enemies at one point in history doesn't mean they always will be.
Andreas Katsulas always managed to play aliens in sci fi tv shows so well. He was fantastic as Tomalak, BRILLIANT as G'Kar in Babylon 5 and gave a theatrical flare to the Enterprise episode "Cogenitor" as Captain Drennik. All in all, Katsulas OWNED playing aliens on Sci Fi shows and watching him face off against Patrick Stewart has got to be one of the highlights of the Next Generation.
btw Check out Babylon 5 for his performance as G'Kar, it is SUPERB and is not just a cameo appearance.
@johnmcn90 you know what pissed me off i looked Andreas Katsulas on IMDB and he isn't isted as being on TNG, but he's listed as being on Enterprise, the insest child of the star trek franchise
@SwordsmanMercenary Whilst I am all for more Tomalak, I think shoehorning him into a sub par film would have been bad. I mean that in the best possible way. He shone on the show, he would have been misused in Nemesis.
@CaptainTrekkie i agree, they would have had to chang the whole plot to have a good spot for Tomalak, but i think that Nemisis was amazing and the only Star Trek film that isn't fantastic is Insurrection.
@CaptainTrekkie not to mention that didn't the actor that played Tomalak, Andreas Katsulas, die before Nemesis came out?...if so that's another reason...no one else could've pulled Tomalak off like him.
this actor is also known for playing G'Kar on Babylon 5
@CaptainTrekkie true, but i think they dont do enough for fans of the show in the movies, as in, make more references to things u would only know if u were an avid watcher of the series, putting 'ol toma in there would have been a decent way to do it..:)
What a trio! Patrick Stewart, Andreas Katsulas ,James Sloyan. It could't get any better on Star Trek with the sole exception of Shatner, Nimoy and Kelley.
Someone posted something about the score, which was fantastic btw, but remember hearing Herman fired the composer because the music was too distracting. Was that for this episode, because the score totally made this ep.... Something later eps didn't.
Wow, the size scales are so messed up at 1:15. The D'Deridex is an enormous vessel. For the Birds of prey to be BEHIND them an appear that large, they must be gigantic. Or, the VFX guys were being lazy. :P
when facing Picard in battle and you get that feeling that you have the upper hand...its only because Picard is letting you have that feeling just to destroy it
I love Picard's 'Shall we die together?' the man knows he could die in the next few minutes but is willing going to go out taking his opponate with him. Tomalak isn't willing to make that sacrifice and Picard KNOWS it.;
Anyone who mistakes Picard's love of peace and his humble attitudes toward others for weakness is in for a nasty surprise if they attempt to engage him in battle. :P
You only see 3 Birds of Prey, but i wonder if there are actually 4? The angle of this scene makes me think there could be a 4th ship to the left of the Enterprise, but due to the angle of shooting you cant see it, it is off camera. But, if it had been shot in wide-screen, we would be able to see that there is a 4th bird of Prey. What do you guys think?
@ssnyderu2 I have always agreed that there were most likely more than what we saw. And I agree there were four birds of prey but due to the angle and distance between ships there could have been up to six for all we know.
One of my favourite moments from the entire series. The look on Tomolok's face when the Bird of Prey's decloak all around him lol. Of course, there's no way Picard would've entered the Neutral Zone without something up his sleeve :)
@TheRealityJack, I think the cloaking device is more of a strategic weapon than a tactical one. The act of cloaking/decloaking takes time, and (presumably) ties up a lot of power that could be used for weapons, shields, or maneuvering. So I doubt you'd see it used in the middle of combat. But I agree, the D'Deridex was consistently shown as being more than a match for the Galaxy, though the two have never actually squared off on-screen.
I bet the Romulans thought they were such hot shit when they decloaked. I wouldve loved to see the look on the Romulan officers face when he got the reading 4 Klingon Birds of Prey were decloaking

josamen 5 months ago 2
@CaptainTrekkie true, but i think they dont do enough for fans of the show in the movies, as in, make more references to things u would only know if u were an avid watcher of the series, putting 'ol toma in there would have been a decent way to do it..:)

What a trio! Patrick Stewart, Andreas Katsulas ,James Sloyan. It could't get any better on Star Trek with the sole exception of Shatner, Nimoy and Kelley.

This is true Ownage. Now....if Cmdr Riker had been doing the talking, this would've been ULTRA OWNAGE!

I love Picard's 'Shall we die together?' the man knows he could die in the next few minutes but is willing going to go out taking his opponate with him. Tomalak isn't willing to make that sacrifice and Picard KNOWS it.;

@hugobomb

What do you guys think?
ssnyderu2 1 year ago
@ssnyderu2 I have always agreed that there were most likely more than what we saw. And I agree there were four birds of prey but due to the angle and distance between ships there could have been up to six for all we know.
buddyds9 1 year ago
@ssnyderu2 THERE! ARE! FOUR!... never mind.
I honestly don't remember.

One of my favourite moments from the entire series. The look on Tomolok's face when the Bird of Prey's decloak all around him lol. Of course, there's no way Picard would've entered the Neutral Zone without something up his sleeve :)
JayArgonaut 1 year ago 4
@TheRealityJack, I think the cloaking device is more of a strategic weapon than a tactical one. The act of cloaking/decloaking takes time, and (presumably) ties up a lot of power that could be used for weapons, shields, or maneuvering. So I doubt you'd see it used in the middle of combat. But I agree, the D'Deridex was consistently shown as being more than a match for the Galaxy, though the two have never actually squared off on-screen.
