Actually, most of the German generals were afraid since the Wehrmacht was not fully prepared, particularly for a winter war. But Hitler was obsessive about his "Lebensraum" theory (vital space). He didn't only start the war to terminate communism, he went on war to terminate what he called "Untermensch" (sub-men). It was foolish, the war against USSR was mostly due to Hitler's obsession.

It was NOT a Wehrmacht march, it was a Prussian march composed in 1866 after the Battle of Königgrätz. But Hitler loved it and often used it for nazis or Wehrmacht parades.
People dont get it: Your High School education taught you nothing about WWII. The "NAZI's" were not the German military forces (Whermacht, Luftwaffe, Panzer Kompfkompelehr, and Kreigsmarines) were not Nazis, they were soliders. The Gestopo and Waffen SS are the one who went about commiting the atrocities of the war, not the frontline soldiers.

@IceBasset u sir are also wrong the waffen SS were combat divisions. the only ones to spread major war crimes was the Totenkopf, Das reich, LAH, and the 12th ss out of some 38 divisions. The 10th SS frundsberg never commited one war crime. The commander was put in for a silver star by an american general. He never recieved it though. During a battle the 10th SS stopped fighting gave care to wounded british and americans and returned them to their lines. so not all of the waffen SS was bad.

Wehrmacht is not a branch is it the whole German military. The branches are Heer which is the regular army, waffen ss the Armed Protective Squadron, kriegsmarine which is Navy, Luftwaffe which is airforce.

It was in actual fact a very good strategy. The russians knew how to retreat properly. Hence the massive amounts of territory lost. Unlike france and poland , who put all their troops right on the border making them sitting ducks to be encircled. Say a defensive line is x deep. When it was breached , it would retreat and the next defensive line would be 2x deep. Then 3x so on so forth. In essence it was like an elastic band being stretched and stretched. And boy did that elastic band snap.

For every Soviet conscript to die there were a thousand more waitig to take his place. They would send men in charges of around 5,000, with around3,000 rifles to be gunned down, if the wounded tried to return to the Soviet lines they would be shot by Political officers (Commisars). Do not speak of subjects u know nothing of.

its what is called a buffer line. every mile counted on an open field in the samne way every inch counted in a closed field such as a city ruins e.g stalingrad. In the early war mistakes were made and as you say . retreats were prohibited. But by 1942 the russians had commanders skilled in retreat/defensive warfare and this was the reason that stalingrad was not taken. It is also the reason why kursk was a fail for germans. They couldnt break through deep russian lines.

I will say this; while Nazis are German, not all Germans are Nazis. Have some respect for these men, they were fine soldiers,at least the equal of the BEF,and by the way,just because Nazi fuckwits used this march does not mean it is a "Nazi march".This march has a proud history in the Prussian and German military,and rouses the spirit of the German people in the way that the British identify with "The march of the Grenadiers".Please respect the soldiers,not the ideals of their political party.

It was NOT a Wehrmacht march, it was a Prussian march composed in 1866 after the Battle of Königgrätz. But Hitler loved it and often used it for nazis or Wehrmacht parades.

People dont get it: Your High School education taught you nothing about WWII. The "NAZI's" were not the German military forces (Whermacht, Luftwaffe, Panzer Kompfkompelehr, and Kreigsmarines) were not Nazis, they were soliders. The Gestopo and Waffen SS are the one who went about commiting the atrocities of the war, not the frontline soldiers.

@IceBasset u sir are also wrong the waffen SS were combat divisions. the only ones to spread major war crimes was the Totenkopf, Das reich, LAH, and the 12th ss out of some 38 divisions. The 10th SS frundsberg never commited one war crime. The commander was put in for a silver star by an american general. He never recieved it though. During a battle the 10th SS stopped fighting gave care to wounded british and americans and returned them to their lines. so not all of the waffen SS was bad.

I am not syaing the waffen SS was good but the waffen SS was a combat group. There were some 3 or 4 divisions out of 38 that gave the waffen SS a bad name. There were 2 branches the combat SS then the political SS. The political SS were the ones that commited many many war crimes and murders

@cowboy4life1986 Yes, but the song is mainly from Prussia, it was created in Prussia around 1866-1867 when Prussia defeated Austria. It was Hitler's favorite marsh, and as you said, it was used in many Nazi acts, but the song still stays Prussian and was not created for doing propaganda for Nazis.

It was in actual fact a very good strategy. The russians knew how to retreat properly. Hence the massive amounts of territory lost. Unlike france and poland , who put all their troops right on the border making them sitting ducks to be encircled. Say a defensive line is x deep. When it was breached , it would retreat and the next defensive line would be 2x deep. Then 3x so on so forth. In essence it was like an elastic band being stretched and stretched. And boy did that elastic band snap.

You are so wrong it's pathetic. Soviet troops were resticted from retreat under all circumstances. They go to the front line in attemps to push or die (usually die anyway). For every Soviet conscript to die there were a thousand more waitig to take his place. They would send men in charges of around 5,000, with around3,000 rifles to be gunned down, if the wounded tried to return to the Soviet lines they would be shot by Political officers (Commisars). Do not speak of subjects u know nothing of.

The reason they were throwing troops forward was so that the germans couldnt simply chase down the retreating troops with motorised warfare. its what is called a buffer line. every mile counted on an open field in the samne way every inch counted in a closed field such as a city ruins e.g stalingrad. In the early war mistakes were made and as you say . retreats were prohibited. But by 1942 the russians had commanders skilled in retreat/defensive warfare and this was the reason that stalingrad was not taken. It is also the reason why kursk was a fail for germans. They couldnt break through deep russian lines.
