Discussing lighting a pipe with a match

When I smoke my pipe, the center of it burns faster and the edges tend to stay unburned. I smoke slowly and light the whole top surface. Is this normal or do you have any suggestions for me to avoid this? Thanks

@Tomahak666 yes, exhale LIGHTLY through the pipe every few minutes, that will widen the burn

Ive found the parrafin leave a bad flavor in teh bowl. The parrafin boils off the matches and is left in the bowl!

Just got my new meerschaum today and decided to only use matches to prevent charring the sides. Last one I had ended up getting messed up a bit from the lighter :(

I have a clay pipe and theres a question i have a cherry flavour tobaco and i dont really tas te it when i smoke it is it because of the pipe? could it be so because the clay pipe is not glazed?

As a veteran Old Boy/Colibri user, allow me to comment on match usage:

Buy Diamond (250 count) Large Kitchen Matches. They almost never fail to light (like the ones you're using) and you won't burn your fingers unless you're at the last stages of smoking an Ardor Giant--in which case, fire up your Colibri Flexion.

In many cases, large stick matches rule, especially for the purists. However, in a public setting, a good pipe lighter might prove to be the more practical choice.

ok well my friend jus got his papers he is being deployed to iraq in two months and he loves smoking a pipe so i wanted to know since his is well not the best lookin thing if there are any pipe sets? like gift basket type things out there and where can i get them...also a good tobacco for him so he can mellow out

Go for quality over quantity: Get him a good pipe from fro example Mario Grandi versus a cheaper gift set. I suggest Billy Bud pipe tobacco from Cornell & Diehl

Lol, matches can be a pain in the arse but i use cooks matches as they seem to burn with a stronger fllame. can even light my pipes outside with them.

Something I tried is to use those long matches for lighting a hearth. They are nice because after the first use, save the stick and just relight the end a few more times from a hot ember on the fire. Works good.
