also im currently reading a book on the subject and will be starting tomorrow with my alleyway there are about 4 dumpsters and what i will most likely find are just average garbage but maybe some aluminum or large metal objects to start a scrap pile XD

I hate the fact Laguna Hills, California looks down on it. I just found behind a store "1 queen mattress, 2 twin box springs, and 3 tables that are absolutely beautiful and a cabinet." Why is it stores do this? I didn't have room in my SUV and there's a camera on the spot so I called the station and they said its not allowed since its on private property. Ill have to ask the store tomorrow morning if they are free. I wish people of this world were more open minded.

I think they all mean friggin! Yea, I dumpster dive, but for very different reasons. But I am not anti establishment. Instead I believe in, and enjoy, taking what is thought to be useless, and I turn it into something useful, or art, or, I recycle the valuable contents. Because once they hit that landfill, they are gone for all time.

For me it's not about eating leftovers to save some money. But as "cheesyflames" mentions, what would happen if everyone suddenly decided only to dumpster dive and not buy anything? Yes the entire economy would collapse (though that is happening anyway, just more slowly) BUT the dumpsters would also collapse, either from all you food not being bought and thus thrown away or from all the people crawling around in the dumpsters (try to imagine that scenario)

Well, they should look at it this way: If everyone goes dumpster diving, the shops would close down because of no customers (there would be A LOT of food in the dumpsters since no one buys though) and then they'd run out of food and the ENTIRE economy would fail.

They can go ahead and eat the leftovers, but the majority of society should remain as it is.

You're a frigging college professor. Not only should you have figured it out, but you should be teaching THAT to the kids.

Here's the short answer. The stores overstock everything so that the consumers get everything they want all the time. If they only stocked what they sold, then some weeks (because purchasing patterns fluctuate unpredictably) they would run out, and you would have to wait for tomatos.
