  • Got my number. :-)

  • this is sooo true!!!

  • Good information, Thanks

  • ignore the stairs and follow the arrows?

  • lol thats me.

  • When you got back to guitar in 97" did you have a guitar teacher? Thanks for this video, it has helped me avoid short cuts in my learning. I am at a point where I feel as though I need a teacher as I have been self taught for the past two years. This one video has kept me on the right road.

  • @oaklandfla2 Yeah, I went to one for about a year. He couldn't play as good as me, but he knew things I didn't. But my biggest discoveries were from my own research. have a look at my new website if you like. it's called GuitarToolbox. You may get something following along there. :)

  • I'm not entirely sure that's what happened to me. For instance, I can play Vai's 'For the Love of God' from start to finish more or less flawlessly, and I can explain all the legato hybrid passages and the staggered rhythms, but if you asked me about the actual theory behind it, I'd mumble some stuff about lydian scales and run away (maybe). It's possible to get a long way with technical skills, but fall behind on the music theory. Ah well, I certainly have my work cut out for me :D

  • nice way to put it,

I know exactly what your talking about, i've been playing for over 10 years. seeing as I was self taught I ended up in a place where my fingers and technical skill far outshadowed my musical knowledge, I could bend it like B.B king but I couldn't even explain what a key was. I only managed to fill most of the gaps in the last few years and ever since my playings done nothing but improve.

  • what are the steps what are the steps exactly man please i want to learn this before i get old i know some things but not enough i care about my skills what do you suggest i buy?

  • @lilgrim131 Its not so much what you need to buy, its more about where your planning on going with your playing. From experience I can tell you that most guitar course books are pretty much the same, once you get the basics down what you'll really need is some one on one practice with better players and good teachers, it can do wonders. When your confident, try focussing on a particular style of music that you enjoy.

more importantly relax and have fun with it, and above all, practice.

    good luck

  • Em 19 years old i play guitar i don't want that to happen to me what do you recommend? What are each of the steps? If you could define them.more clearly.

  • @lilgrim131 If you're serious you'll go to a good guitar teacher.

  • Em 19 years old i play guitar i don't want that to happen to me what do you recommend?

  • church...yeh rigfht:D but you've got a point:)

the only thing i'm kinda sad about is that you never told us all of the steps

  • @offwithurhead I'm sure you don't need anyone to hold your hand all the way, do you? :)

  • @tortoiseutube but i doooo!..:D

  • @offwithurhead Then go buy a guitar course and use it. Complete it. Gibson's Learn & Master Guitar is very good. :)

  • umm this was a good vid BUT you didnt mention what exactly each step is except for the first 3.

  • Thanks so much for the inspirational video! Sometimes I feel so impatient to learn it the straight way, but you've shown me that it's the fastest way!

  • people learn in different ways. just saying

  • this is actually exactly what happened to me... i started learning chords and everything was fine until i started trying to learn songs and completely abandoned the theory.. since i've never had a teacher i got no one to correct me and wasted a lot of time because of that :( im now learning the penta and major scales but feel a bit down beacause of all the time i wasted :(... i love playing the guitar still so.. guess theres hope for me

  • Excellent advice. Unfortunately, the well worn path isn't always the most beneficial way. Thanks

  • xD!!! GRACIAS TORTOISEUTUBE!! THANKS VERY MUCH!!! Merci Beaucoup!!!

  • nice video. what books and dvds would you recommend to a 3rd level guitar player.

  • This message has helped me stick to the basics more than any other message. I started about eight months ago and was tempted to take other avenues like tabs etc and came across this message. I am now sticking to learning it from the ground up and even though its time consuming I can already see the benefits. Thank you so much.

  • This video.... it's like it was made for me. It's opened my eyes, and I am so grateful to you, really. And the most funny thing is I'm actually learning Stairway to Heaven now, and I started guitar 5 months ago and I've honestly skipped those steps. I am coping well with Stairway to Heaven, but I'll get it all much faster with the real knowledge behind me. And I'm sitting here in a face-palm position because I should have realised this earlier. This video is a lifesaver. Thanks very very much.

  • I'm like watching this, and i can't believe it. You really hit the nerve of it, man. Well, i'm just a begginer, but i've seen bunch of guys who droped it because of what ur sayin'. See, i'm 22 yrs old, and i'm just starting. And I don't have much free time, but i'll make some.

Anyway, what you've said here, is something like I had imagined it should be: Tough and it will take a lot of time. Foundation's all that matters. Greeting from Serbia, Europe.

  • i`m one of them tooo....i need to go back and learn what i missed

  • I use tabs for waay to elaborated stuff for me

like spanish romanza and Granada (Isak albeniz)...

Other - like yugoslav rock, and classic american rock I try by ear, simple rumba..

it's about 1 tab, 10-20 songs by ear.

  • He's right

    good video

  • That's EXACTLY what happened to me - but I'll carry on - Thanks! :)

  • haha this video is awesome. story of my life xD

  • Well yeah, that's right. There is no shortcut, just go the straight line, all other ways are even longer.

  • cool. are you a New Zealander?

  • I think so. A 'Kiwi'.

Learning the 'basic' stuff never ends, really. Getting it down gives you more options and control. I played for about 30 years without knowing the theory. But boy, once I studied theory it just opened the door for me.

  • Ha! stairway to heaven! that was the first song i tried to play. it is an evil song. i have to say that you make a very great point. people that just play and dont learn what guitar was built on are some weird ones (im one of them) some musicians are really good by just playing allot and not knowing what there doing but i know its better for atleast me to learn this basic stuff. it will make me a better player

  • you're right

  • ha! its so true.!

  • Okums Razor. Shortest distance between two objects.

  • Toirtoiseguitar(.)com Your stairway to guitar playing heaven. 4:57 Subliminal much? haha jk but thanks

  • eh???

  • Sorry I lost control on my grammar. At 4:57 there is a brief image displaying your website. When this happens on t.v. people like to think it's subliminal messaging, by getting the sub conscious to read it with out the conscious mind to notice anything. It's probably all a load of B.S. but people say it's used often in advertising.

  • Ah. OK. Not intentional. Just my bumbling, I guess. :)

  • This is exactly what happens to all of us who are self thought... it sucks to have played for years just to have to go back and start all over again

  • Thanks for showing the path!

  • I've been playing for a long time, 20+ years. Seems I finally took it serious enough last year to go "back" and learn what I should have. I will say that over the past year (I average at least 3-4 hours per day everyday) in learning stuff I should have a long time ago..and I've learned more about the guitar in the past year then I did in 20 years of just banging on the damn thing.

With of of that said, you gotta give the guy credit, he knows of what he is talking about with this theory.

  • i m back to the straight path ............thanx

  • thank you sir u just helped me realize im an idiot

  • Kai Iwi? Out the beach? LOL

  • Lol you are so right...i totally understand where you are coming from (so do a lot of other people by the look of the comments on here!) you are doing a great job, i'm glad i found your videos you have helped me a lot in a very short time and i appreciate it. Go hard Wanganui!

  • 4:57 :p You should be a shrink or marketeer.

  • Woah, I did that XD

  • This guy is my new best friend

  • i just started to play guitar,so now that i know what can happen i will try not to go off path

  • Oh my god... that's me!!! I've wanted to play for 10 years! I know a bunch of chords, a few scales, and a crapload of parts of songs... and they're all failures! This is so true!!! I blame my ADHD... :) I really do want to get back on course!

  • Thanx, i needed to see this. i need to show this 2 my friend. BEFORE IT'S TOO LATE!

  • I've done exactly what you said learned a little & wandered off the track & then you get lost going knowhere for years, what you say is absolutely correct,i learned open chords & the barre chords & then never bothered learning the pentatonics trying to play in bands out of my depth & i was getting knowhere fast,at last i've found a guy who explains it all in plain english ,keep the video's coming i'm learning..many thanks!!!

  • ITS TRUE!! ITS SO FUCKING TRUE!!!!! lol srsly!

  • If only i could have had this 7 years ago!!!

  • So like, what happens when you've done this for nearly twelve years? I guess I could say I'm an advanced guitar player but I know literally nothing of music theory. However, I can learn songs decently fast. I just learned and nearly perfected a completely new style along with a pretty difficult song within a few weeks.

I mean, will it kill me not to learn the basics? I'd love to go back but it's a lot to take in and memorize on top of what I already know. :/

  • wow. this is the story of my life. Guitar Stores should REQUIRE you to watch this before they will sell to you.

  • lol, tempted by Stairway to Heaven. So true, the first week I started playing guitar I learned the intro to Stairway. This method described here is so true. Take it step by step

  • this is what exactly I did for 18 months! only just coming around the last year! xD

  • consider yourself lucky gammy, i have been bouncing around like this for 20 years. I can play some wicked stuff but have almost no idea what i am doing and have waisted countless hours of 'practice'. thats why I am watching this guys vidios.

  • Master I too have wandered off the path! But I must have some tunes under my belt to stay keen,I have my scales, my Pentatonics and now Im looking at the Triads, Where too next?

  • That's me; "no foundation". I don't know what the heck is going on! lol

  • I've been attempting to teach myself guitar for the past 10 months, pretty non-stop. From tabs and beginner theory online to just picking it up and finding my own way around, I've come a long way fast.

I've found my biggest problem is that there is simply too much out there, and whenever I ask the dreaded question 'why', I can never get a straight answer besides 'just do it, and you'll understand later'. It's hard to stay motivated 'grinding' all the information without knowing where I amgoing

  • Are the old getting lost on the merry go round "A". Scales and pentatonics can be boring as bat shit, but its the most important thing to learn to do! Finger positioning, then speed, comes later. Basic chords, bar chords, scales pentatonics, major minor and the other modes, then Triads, bending, hammer ons, pull off's. Fuck!!! Stay focused on what you want to play. Then learn those things that will achieve it,BUT, scales and pentatonics will always be a must learn in order to shread later.

  • say it is real this happen to me so what i did was to back track an learn what i miss out on all info i need so now i,m playin a lot better....it ture with some of the guitar tab out there some of them are wrong this a good way to learn from this lesson

  • Wow it totally make sense now why it feels like I'm missing stuffs cuase I tried jumping up and learn scales even before I master building up chords...

But I hope you can do vids that starts from scratch and show some steps to reach the top...

  • Great! You young fuckers out there beter listen up! Guy said wisdomous shit!

  • You keep refering to the steps, what are the steps? Whats the method? Can't follow the path if I don't know how to walk it.

  • Decide on a method (book, DVD course etc) and stick with it until completed. Don't keep buying books, don't keep being sucked in by websites that promise amazing (impossible) things. Just develop a focus and work every day at it slowly and steadily like a Tortoise. Most people try to rush the process by trying to jump ahead of their ability and knowledge.

  • Im gonna print this reply and paste it on my notebook so I can read it everytime and never forget it! Ty Master!!

  • I meant to also say... practice with your chosen method EVERY day until completed. 30-60 minutes (or whatever), but do it every day. And separate your 'serious' practice time from your mucking about/noodling/inventing/exploring time. :)

  • "To Be a Rock * And Not to Roll."

  • Dam, your breaking my heart here. lol

  • LOL

  • Don't get discouraged man.

  • It's NOT about 'how' you are failing. It's one thing that causes MOST beginners to give up! It's 'why' most fail and give up. But thanks for your opinion. :)

  • I assumed you meant a method book or a dvd originally but i wasnt sure, thx for replying

  • sounds like when i started....funny.

  • Listen to this man, I did the chops road and came back for my theory and rythem, and it took a lot to get where I was going, listen to this person, and John Petrucci and you'll get there fast as posible :]

Thank you for posting this :)

  • Amazingly good advice...common sense is very uncommon don't you think? This little chat has inspired me to stop messing around trying to learn Gilmore riffs and to get on and learn the basics. Thanks

  • Excellent advice, Brilliant channel! Love your work! :?D

  • P.S i enjoyed the Led Zeppelin references :)

  • this is very true, its hard not to succumb to the temptation of babylon! I really appreciate your videos! What i would like to know is more of the steps.

The steps so far are; open chords, bar chords and pentatonic scales so what's next?

could you please name a few more things i should be learning. i play a lot of country music so I'm familiar with open chords and bar chords and chord progression. where should go from here? your advice would be greatly appreciated!

    Kind regards Adam

  • Learn songs. LOTS of them and see where these concepts and ideas fit.

It's always learning to play songs that's the most important. All this theory stuff is just that... theory. It can help, but it's not the be all and end all.

Using your ears and learning songs is the way to go.

  • thank you :) i guess im doin ok then... i keep learning songs that i know i will be able to learn instantly, ones with simple progressions and stuff... sometimes i like to challenge myself with a bit of a harder song.

    cheers!!

  • I've been playing for about 7 months, and i would have been straying further and further if i hadn't found this.

This is me in a nutshell--first half of the video that is.

    Check me out though!

    For 7 months of playing.

  • wow.....soo true. thanks!

  • so damn true!

  • thank you i started to play the into to Stairway

  • excellent... thankyou.

  • Wise words...

  • Just discovered you! Thanks sooooo much for your gift. I've been playing for decades off and on, all in the rivers of Babylon. Now I'm ready to become a musician, and here you are, helping me. xoxoxo!

  • Awesome. You describe me exactly!
