@thctony zoo's generate money for conservation, that's what most are actually for (at least here in the UK) The money you pay to get in not only feeds the animals, but it helps run conservation projects and scientific studies. Being able to study endangered animals closely can also help with conservation. Also, many 'less interesting' animals would go extinct due to lack of donations if it weren't for zoos.

that said zoos should be a lot nicer. why does it have to be made of concrete? my guess is that the enclosure is so small that a dirt floor would need constant resurfacing. The solution shouldnt be concrete, it should be larger enclosures with natural surfaces

Yeah I agree I don't like seeing zoo's (At least zoos that look so under-maintained like this one. The zoo near where I live is expansive and the animals seems genuinely happy, but still.) But it's better for them as a species to be in captivity because they're endangered. @TragicTopGun50 NO. That's not true. This is a zoo. Not a rescue center. In rescues they actually help an injured animal and release it (IF POSSIBLE) into the wild. Zoos capture animals and put them up for display so snobby little brats can go look at them.

Same thing for (SOME) amusement parks and circuses. Such as Santa's Enchanted Forest (I don't know if you have it where you live, but it's so popular during December). At Santa's Enchanted Forest they capture the gorgeous wild elephants.

That, in reality, is bullshit. Very few elephants, live in the real wild. They live naturally in massive reserves which are run/guarded by conservationists. Good luck trying to get in there and kill one for its tusks. The only way you can visit these reserves, is if they let you. They have the right to search you for anything that may threaten the animals, or the balance - they also ID you. In otherwords, try getting into an airplane when you're on the no-fly list.

I worked with elephants in ZOO (african elephants). It's horror for them :/ They are to inteligent to stay in the same place for hole life. This elephant one day will lose balance and fall into the ditch. Fortunately, the ditch is not deep, but many animals is loosing lifes in this way in ZOO.
