This is very beautifully sung by Caballe. She has a deep understanding of the 4 Last Songs and Strauss' music. She is still considered one of the best Salomes along with Nilsson. Her voice has wistful, magical legato and she sings with reverence and even a "holy" voice, thanks to the slow "eternity" themed conducting pace by Alain Lombard. This is terrific, even as great as Jessye Norman's legendary version.
Call me crazy, but, I've always thought that, anyobe able to sing this song well, must be out of this world... it's so much beauty, I think I can't handdle it! I'm too small!
In my posting yesterday, I forgot that Mme. Caballé actually recorded the rôle of Salomé in the Richard Strauß opera, op.54, under Erich Leinsdorf. Thus, most positively she's no stranger to this composer (and her interpretation isn't a spur-of-the-moment thing!!)!! Some might not like her (but that's also a matter of taste!); however, there's no denying she has not a little to offer with his stuff, as this posting proves!! I can gladly say to her and her accompanying team here: well done!!
She sang and recorded Salome numerous times. She also sang Arabella by Strauss, and Caballe, if you read her autobiography mentions that Strauss is her favorite composer and that Salome is her favorite opera.
I like Caballe with Mozart and Donizetti (liverecordings!) A few years of her career she has been astonishing! And then she turned to use to much this sluffy kind of piano.... But she is a real italian kind of voice.... She has never been a real Spinto....
Nonsense: Mme Caballé speaks fluently german! She is an instument with the other instruments in the orchestra! And A.Lombard and Philharmonic of Strasbourg at the great time!!!!!!!!!!! (subsidiary: taste is one thing and subjective. Style is something objective)
She sings as if from the bottom of a well. The voice is ravishing but it's in no way ecstatic. She's singing syllables, not words. The net effect is funereal.
Montserrat fails to capture the poetic lyrics and seems to concentrate to vocalize the german words with an intention of showing off her pianissimi. She even misses notes. She sounds strained and uncomfortable. Strauss is not her gebiet at all.
Perhaps Caballé isn't most at home in Richard Strauß, but this still is an excellent performance!!! Most certainly (and the score proves it!) she neither misses any notes (though ONE's late - not unusual with live performances to have such a little slip), nor is there any deficiency with her German; her musicianship's right on! Also, Alain Lombard does many beautiful things with the Strasbourg Philharmonic although I prefer other conductors (Solti, Masur, Szell {for Schwarzkopf}, Karajan).
Simply amazing. Sung as the composer wrote it. So many rush it today b/c they lack the vocal technique the opera master of voice required of them. This has the best tone, phrasing with breath control and dynamics of any examples of Strauss' Ver Letze Lieder. A Million thank you's
Me gusta mas la versión grabada de la Chicago Symphony Orchestra....

Beautiful song sung beautifully. Caballe is amazing. Her love-duets LP with Domingo remains my favorite recording of all time.

I agree with you. Did you heard her Zueignung ? For my taste, it is stylistically awful...
But it is good to remember that German language is very difficult for Spanish speaking people. And her voice remains gorgious anyway !
