Great footage. I was 11 at the time and this storm, along with Betsy, Donna, Alma created a lifelong interest in hurricanes. We were in Hollywood and went out in the eye-very eerie. Thanks for sharing this.
I was six years old, living in Ft. Lauderdale when Cleo came through. I thought the weathermen and newscasters in the area were as cool as the astronauts and The Beatles. It's great to see their names (in the comments section).
I was 14 when Cleo hit. I was living at 8500 NW 30th Place in Miami. I remember Donna in 1960, but it missed Miami by about 90 miles. This was my first (and only) experience of the eye of a hurricane. I only wish it hit during daylight. It wasn't supposed to be a direct hit--was forecasted to pass ~20 mi.offshore. The Wind gauge at the weather station (then at NW 36th St) blew away after hitting 110 mph. An anemometer in Ft. L recorded a gust to 138 mph! Even as late as 11PM, they said it was o
I lived in Boynton Beach then. We were really hit hard and I remember not having electricity for over a week... but I was a little kid and thought it was fun.
Gravel roofs were popular in those days, but during hurricane Cleo (1964) our car's paintwork was pitted with gravel marks from gravel blown off the roof!
I was 7 years old at the time and living in Carol City, near where the Pro Player Stadium is now. I will always remember eerie calm of the eye. My two brothers and I actually walked around outside for a few minutes before the eye passed. Inside the house we could see the glass of the patio doors bowing in with the pressure. They say one should open windows during a hurricane to equalize the pressure - Unforgettable! I thought it was exciting!
I lived in a house in the small part of Miami called Westchester. We watched Weatherman Don Franklyn and Bob Weaver give timely storm up-dates on WTVJ Channel-4 (CBS) along with newsmen Del Frank and Lee Vickers. Weatherman Bill Ross on WCKT Channel-7 (NBC) also gave us great information before and during Hurricane Cleo. I spent the Hurricane at my Dads hotel, (the Arlington) located on SouthBeach. After the storm we saw dozens of dead fish layed out all along the beach. I was 6&1/2 years old.
I was 15 when Cleo hit...parents owned a motel on Hollywood Beach...will never forget that storm...my Mom sat in a corner all night with her hands over her ears trying to block the sound of the wind...you could actually hear the wind whistling through the electrical outlets...during the eye my Dad, sister and myself had to open a door and sweep water out of the back bedroom...the smell of rotting fish on A1A and Surf Rd lasted for days...would never want to go through something like that again!
I was five years old when it hit a motel my parents were managing called The Ranco Del Mar on A1A in Ft Lauderdale it was something I will never forget it blew the door in and my dad had to go to the utility room during the eye to get a hammer and some nails to nail the door shut We had no lights and I remember FPL coming out and climing the pole to get the lights back on it must of left a impression on me I've work for FPL for 28 years And worked my share of hurricanes
On the night of August 27th 1964, I was on 4th street and Ocean Drive in Miami Beach at the Arlington Hotel, which is still there by the way. For dinner that night I had a chicken sandwich on white bread with Helmans mayonaise. I remember between 11:pm and 1:am my father who owned the hotel opened the exit door to the patio and pool area and the sound of the wind was a Deafening Roar. They used tape on the lobby windows and these old red oil lanterns for light. I was only 6-and 1/2 years old.
man dose this video bring it all back went through cleo and betsy and many more since then and after too many hits and living in central fla for 24 years it became too much

Hi everyone; ready for something ironic? My name is Cleo and I was born on the 20th August, 1994. Hurricane Cleo formed on the 20th August, 1964. Exactly 30 years before I was born. !!! [Thanks for the clip]
I was living in Miami beach at the time. The eye came directly overhead. The air went calm for about 45 minets. I have a life long interest in Meteorology and fond memories of cleo. Never throught that i would see movies. Thank very much!
Glad you posted this Cleo footage. I was in North Miami at the time, we had eye passage around 2 to 3 am. Cleo was the first time I experienced the eyewall of a hurricane and I have chased more than 60 hurricanes/typhoons since but I always remember Cleo as my first strong hurricane in 1964.

(To finish) only an 85 mph storm. It surprised everyone by it's rapid intensification in the last couple of hrs before landfall.
