I'm 13, I have a strong passion for dance and I train really hard for about 15-17 hours a week. My pointe-work is pretty good but i don't have very high-arched feet or much flexibility, do I have a shot at getting in?
Hi! first of all these dancers are just plain drop dead gorgeuos. Love them! So my question is.. I´m 17 and I´ve been doing ballett since 3 and a half years now, i´ve been on pointe since 2. Since about 2 years i have been training 5-6 times a week about 1 and a half to 3 hours a day... I know this is silly and impossible... but is there a chance that I can still become a dancer? And about this program, can you still attend when you are 18? Are they very picky about tecnique and so on? thanks
@frogsrock99 The expectation at our summer program is to be taking pointe class in Level IV (ages 12-13) and above. Talk to your teacher about when it's appropriate for you to begin pointe class!
I really want to get into dance! however, I'm already 14, with no experience, and since I have 2 sisters that are going to college in the span of 2 years I don't think I'll be able to afford doing it :( But they are absolutely amazing! It brings me happiness to watch others do something that I can only wish that I could do. Good just anyone and everyone who dances!
@LuckyLoveProductions While our company dancers can attend the University of Seattle through our Second Stage program, the only classes we offer are ballet classes!
Do you take students from london? I quit ballet when i was young, im thirteen now and i really really want to go here! My parents said if i want to, am i dreaming?lol
Are there classes available for students in the mid-teen level for learning the fundamentals and begginer ballet? I did ballet for 2 years when I was very very young, and I would love to be able to go back to it :) Thanks!
I still wish I could dance like them, and not be an undancer with terrible turnout, weak ankles and no tour-abilty at all. Why can't I make 32 fouettes or a tenthquadraple pirouette? :( Though, this inspires me to train more and work much harder.
do you ever have cross-training camps for gymnasts/skaters ect. who study ballet to improve our sport performance? Ballet is a really popular cross-training method in a lot of these sports but studios tend to not have classes over the summer....
if you did offer such a camp next year I'd be like the first one on the sign up sheet!
@Sanchara As a pre-professional school, we unfortunately do not have any cross-training classes, however most studios will offer open classes for all levels throughout the summer. You should check those out, since yes it's true, ballet can be beneficial for all sports!
@hrsdance 19 i've been there twice, yes being a top notch ballet intensive most of the girls have ballet bodies but not all. they appreciate talent, not a cookie cutter dancer. try your best and audition!!
@rasberryxoxo14 Of course it is! I didn't start until I was 14, and I'm now in advanced one ballet, and I've only been dancing for two years! I've already done 3 exams, grade 3 and 4, and Intermediate ballet. And I've got another one coming up in Easter. Definitely go for it, otherwise you'll regret not taking the chance!
I am 16 and have been doing ballet for 7 months, but i am going en pointe very soon, in less than a month. Is there a chance that I could audition and be accepted for this summer? I will be taking over 6 classes (more than an hour long) a week. What are your recommendations?
I know that you have to be a very strong technical dancer to go to PNB, but do you have to have perfect turnout? Do they look for the pirouettes starting a straight back leg?
I miss this amazing place so much. My summers and then winters here have helped shape who I am today as a person. As a wife, mother, teacher, friend. Having also spent 2 winters at SAB, I love to recommend PNB to young aspiring dancers.
PNB, i my experience, nurtures the entire dancer. Her emotional, mental and physical health matter to the teachers. Plus the training is the best in the country IMO.
Would you recommend this summer course as a first summer program to do away from home? I'm 15 and I've never done an intensive away from home, and I'm looking for one that would be good for this summer. Thank you!
I went to PNB two years ago and I definitely recommend it as your first summer intensive! It was my first one, and they kept a good eye on you but let you do your own thing too. It was so nice and the city is very pretty. And, most importantly, the training is some of the very best! :)
PNB is one of the few schools in this country that employs a written syllabus, based primarily on Balanchine technique (especially with regards to an emphasis on speed and clarity and certain adaptations such as pirouettes from a deep lunge, back leg straight, etc). Its founder, Francia Russell is a former NYCB soloist and NYCB ballet mistress who stages Balanchine's ballets all over the world and, along with Kent Stowell, was heavily influenced by him (same goes for Boal of course).
I went to the audition in Chicag o and had Peter Boal as the instructor. i was really nervous but i got into level 6!! The audition was just like a regular class, we did Barre and Center with like 30 minutes en pointe. I heard beck about 1 week later. Did you end up going to the audition? Did you get in? What level?
yeah! i went there! i'm in the video in the background for like, .5 seconds actually, haha. go to their website and they have a list of cities that you can go to to audition. i think it's seperated by age if i remember and 15(?) and over have to have their pointe shoes on the whole audition. it's an AMAZING summer intensive!
The audition is a pretty normal class from what I remember, but I was also part of the younger group so I'm not sure how the older group's would be. I would be prepared to have a very solid adagio in center and move quickly in the combos after that. If you're in pointe shoes the whole audition you'll probably do some fouettes at the end. Either separate 16 fouettes or maybe piques from the corner into fouettes.
This looks fantastic! If I ever find myself in Seattle... or in America, uberhaubt, I will visit them. This is like the American equivalent of the RBS or the ENBS or the Bolshoi or Vaganova. Wow! 5 stars!

You don;t have to have perfect turnout, but you need very good turnout. And yes, they do look for pirouettes with a straight back leg.

turn out is always important, it doesn't have to be PERFECT though. and pirouettes are straight back leg with a large 4th.
