I would like to clarify. The Hyena has the strongest jaws in all the animal kingdom when you take into account it's size. Meaning, the Hyena has the strongest bite in terms of proportions. Two full grown Hyena's can stand toe to toe with a full grown lion. Can two wolves do that? No. The Hyena is strong enough to cave a man's skull with one bite. Can a wolf do that? No. Their bite is way over 2,000 PSI. quite a significant amount more than a tiger's bite. A tiger is the largest wild cat.

I read a few comments from other people and I think it depends on the situation not their attack styles. If the hyena is injured, the wolf would win. If a healthy hyena vs a small - average wolf, the hyena would win. but a Large - very large wolf vs a heathy hyena, its pretty much of who makes the first mistake and they are both very intelligent predators.

there used to be 100 kg Hyennas until 10 000 years ago in europe , they lost the competition with wolves and other predators of the time. a toundra wolf is quicker and has more endurance than a hyenna but the hyenna has a stronger jaw power. wolves in canada have been seen to kill large bears.. hyenna disapeared from europe and the top 3 predators like the bear , the wolf and the european lion ( exterminated by the Romans 2000 years ago) remained .

In a one vs one fight, there are view things to reconsider.
Strenght: the hyena is stronger, bigger, stronger jaws, heavier, even more stamina
but the wolf's advantage is that its more determined, just like wild dogs vs hyenas.
so if its going to be a fight the hyena will win, but if the fight is not on yet, its likely the wolf scares of the hyena.

@Icantfeeeeeelit intelligence doesn't mean much in a 1 on 1 fight. it would take at least 4 or 5 wolves to defeat a full sized hyena. hyena's weigh up to 170lb while wolves top out around 90-110. thats a 50% size difference - it would be like a full grown man against a 10 year old. the hyena would destroy the wolf every time due to its huge size advantage. look it up if you don't believe me.

@scuzzulus There are authenticated records of male wolves weighing as much as 175 pounds (79 kilograms). So size does not matter. They even take down animals as large as bison. I think it is rather equal between these two animals. Skill is what counts, size is only a slight advantage in some cases. Not all.

@Bhawks328 Actually, he's right. A hyena is larger and stronger than a Gray Wolf. Though the wolf is slightly faster during a full out run and they are about even in regards to stamina, a wolf is also more agile. If a wolf can stay out of reach then it should have the advantage but if a hyena bites the wolf in the right spot then it is over. Hyenas have one of the strongest bite forces (pounds per square inch) on earth, known to easily crush bone.

I would like to clarify. The Hyena has the strongest jaws in all the animal kingdom when you take into account it's size. Meaning, the Hyena has the strongest bite in terms of proportions. Two full grown Hyena's can stand toe to toe with a full grown lion. Can two wolves do that? No. The Hyena is strong enough to cave a man's skull with one bite. Can a wolf do that? No. Their bite is way over 2,000 PSI. quite a significant amount more than a tiger's bite. A tiger is the largest wild cat.

I read a few comments from other people and I think it depends on the situation not their attack styles. If the hyena is injured, the wolf would win. If a healthy hyena vs a small - average wolf, the hyena would win. but a Large - very large wolf vs a heathy hyena, its pretty much of who makes the first mistake and they are both very intelligent predators.

there used to be 100 kg Hyennas until 10 000 years ago in europe , they lost the competition with wolves and other predators of the time. a toundra wolf is quicker and has more endurance than a hyenna but the hyenna has a stronger jaw power. wolves in canada have been seen to kill large bears.. hyenna disapeared from europe and the top 3 predators like the bear , the wolf and the european lion ( exterminated by the Romans 2000 years ago) remained .

There are tons of documentary film about both of these species. You can easily verify those facts.
