It was always a pain to listen to this woman, even when her voice was in its prime. It was a magnificent instrument, but I hate how she uses/used it... and we can hear all too clearly the toll her "technique" took on her voice.
seriously. tenors are worse tho. a powerful lyric soprano singing tosca is forgivable. a wimpy sounding lyric tenor singing manrico is not. you have to sound like a man to sing opera. give me corellli, vickers or, best yet, Vinay. I will admit tho, I love Jonas Kaufmann. his dark, rich timbre is extremely refreshing.
LOL....Only 30%? where the hell did you come up with that random number? Did someone do a study? Bumbry didn't have a small voice by ANY standard, and she sings the HELL out of this aria. She does it FAR better than Marton, by any standard you can measure.
but Grace Bumbry could sing this aria in spades. This poor chick is struggling, and according to the record- Marton was a "real" soprano. Hm... go figure
One of the saddest things is to see a singer you once so admired, get to such a dreadful stage vocally and not be able to adapt and adjust - as many can and have. Marton was a wonderful singer and brought great excitemnent and pathos to everything she sang so this is sad to hear. In all fairness though, she did improve slightly and steady out once she got going. There is a truly terrifying clip somewhere on U-tube of her doing a clip from an operetta. Stay away unless you are very brave!
Yes and on that same concert where she does the aria from an operetta she also sings "In questa reggia" from Turandot and it's painful. Wobbly, uneven, flat, and the faces she makes are horrible.
what the hell was she thinking singing this??? she's known as a soprano, but she has no highs and no lows, what was that at 01:09!!! sounds like my mom wen she sees a cockoroach.
This is not bad!! But I definatly prefer true mezzos singing this even though eve does have a great chest register and sound a lot like a mezzo!! The cb was rather strange!! However her voice IS remarkable!!!
I like Eva in many things - vocally this didn't quite make it but I definitely thought she did a good job of portraying a character in a concert setting. 3/5
hmmm....how odd that she actually sang this like a mezzo. The Cb was almost nonexistent. This is way over the top...and not necessarily in a bad way. She's just going after it full bore. She's not at her best here. 4/4
Marton was almost always a full blast singer. Her Turandot and Leonora were wonderful. This is almost TO much. But, wow, how can you not love her over the top impression! I mean this woman is ANGRY and wants revenge there is no doubt about it. 4/5
THIS IS A PERFECT EXAMPLE WHEN OPREA SINGERS SHOULD HAVE RETIRED POOR DEAR

sometimes vocal decline has to do with a terrible personality...

I will forever love Marton because her singing is always tragically candid. But objectively, it is mediocre. 3/2

2/2. she does bad in the places where you'd expect a soprano to shine and naturally disappoints in the mezzo requirements
