He doesn't explicitly say it like this, but he seems to agree religiosity often results from a lack of critical thinking, not necessarily irreversible mental retardation. That's why he elaborates the unreliability of faith to establish truth; he's teaching critical thinking skills. I was raised in church although never was very religious & i took my son few times to church when he was small toddler. I do not want my son to be brainwashed the same way I was. Sometimes I think once people is exposed to these imaginaries fable when they are children (their brain is not formed yet), it become difficult to erase these beliefs because became wired in the brain. I don't think there's anything wrong with having an opinion that there is a creator being. The lack of distinction between opinion and truth is the issue. That's not something limited to the religious. If a person isn't willing to accept that a belief is an opinion, I doubt any amount of practical fact will bridge the gap.
