  • Giuseppe Verdi, go back to your frame!

  • @Max0Inq i knew he looked familiar! haha

  • Monopoly Commendatore isnt half as bad as the Maidenform Don Gio with Tommy Hampson

  • Very good performance. Nice voices. Sad they have to look like penguins.

  • Top hatted Commendatore? WTH? I did not know the Commendatore was an English lord- The director needs to also be executed the same way as Don Giovanni is in this scene for this crime!

  • A top hat? The fuck?

  • i like the hat!

  • Just love this opera. Great performance!

  • What is the name of the singer who plays the role of Commendatore??? I like him and it¨s important, he should be mentioned

  • @cantanteporsiempre Franz-Josef Selig is the Commendatore.

  • Like this is the movie brought you here.

  • I feel like the music is louder than the singing. I can barely hear them over it.

  • @Hallstaintedred Singing IS music. I assume you mean the orchestra?

  • ( ;∀;) ブラーーボーーーーーーーー!!

  • a lincoln hat?

where's the viking helmet with eagle wing horns?

  • @Icerues Yes, that hat is about 50 years too early. FYI, its a myth that they Vikings wore horned helmets.

  • The best version!!!!!!

  • i wanna dress up in the statue costume and stand next to my brothers bed when he wakes up, then play this as loud as my ears can take :D

  • @evilblades : please, can we have at least a video when you'll do it?

  • Now Don Giovanni is going to jail because Mr. Peanut caught him cheating at Monopoly.

  • what is the name of the bass?

  • holy crap! The monopoly guy back from the dead! He's after my Park Place!!! Run!! Run to free parking!!

  • Wow! Watch Dom Juan... Mr. Peanut is out to get you! :S

At least the outfit gives one a good laugh! =)

  • I have this DVD... ITS AMAZING!!! Everytime that I see the Commendatore scene its a special and unique moment. Perfect figurines and atmosphere btw!

  • Carlos Alvarez es el mejor baritono en la actualidad.

  • This is a really interesting version.

But I still think that it needs more eye contact between the actors. Make it feel more realistic.

Other than that, it was great.

  • @EliasCalabretta1 The problem is in order to produce the sound that these talented singers do, they can't turn their heads or bend their necks without negatively affecting the sound. At the same time, the sound travels in the directions they are facing, which keeps turning their entire bodies from being a viable option either.

  • amazing opera! one of the best i ever heard!

  • poor Leporell who never received his wages.......

  • is there another song that keeps the tone of the first minute of this song?....oh man the first min of this song is ridiculous...the rest is good but i rather enjoy that first bit.

  • Commendatore is a player hater.

  • "Don Giovanni...

    You moved to Park Place...

    And I own Board Walk,

    With 2 hotels..."

  • lol that tophat is absurd

  • @theater42 lol

  • @theater42 lmfao hahahahahaahahahahaha

  • @theater42 brilliant haha

  • @theater42 Oh, shit, hahahahahahahahahahaha. That is classic!

  • @theater42 I guess the Commendatore is a Republican.

  • @theater42 I almost died laughing. :D

  • @theater42 Then you should suffer you bastard Don Giovanni :)) pay me for 2 hotels now :)))

  • @theater42

Your comment has been making me laugh all day long . . . hope it doesn't ruin the damnation scene for me in the future! :-)

  • @gloriabobgloria Only if the coming Commandatores will be wearing a cylinder hat ;) lol. That comment was gold

  • @theater42 Dammit, I was taking this seriously, until you pointed out he looks like Mr. Monopoly. Now I'm laughing!

  • Mr. Monopoly's Revenge

  • @theater42 LOOL

  • Is this at the Vienna State Opera?

  • For benanescas, the bass is

    Franz-Josef Selig

  • thank you very much

  • très poignant cette musique

  • Is D'Arcangelo Don Giovanni and Álvarez Il Commendatore?

  • Don Giovanni is Alvarez, D'Arcangelo is Leporello. I don't know who is the Commendatore :(

  • Thanks, I suspect that... hahaha

  • Does anyone know where I can find a good english translation of this libretto. I want to find out what Leporello is saying near the end.

  • His lines in this scene are the following:

    - Oh master, we are all doomed.

    - I feel like being feverish, and I can't hold my limbs from shaking (La terzana di avere mi sembra e le membra fermar più non so)

    - I'm sorry, he doesn't have time.

    - Say you won't!

  • Sorry, I forgot the last part:

    - The fire of doom surrounds him,

    Its fiery glare confounds him,

What sounds, what sights of terror,

Oh, I shall die, oh, I shall die of fright!

  • Thank you so much. It's beautiful poetry.

  • LOLZ!!!!

I love this opera, and this version is --though staged a little too conventionally for my taste-- very good. Especially because of the singers.

    But I couldn't resist you comment. :D

  • dude you're right!!! XD

  • I want a smoking jacket like Giovanni's, so i can sit in it drinking madiera and singing about unrepentance.

  • That would be awesome. I think I know how I'm going to spend my day now.

  • haha, yeah:D

  • No one has ever beatenthe top had

  • One of the only commentators that have done it for me.

  • Kurt Moll?

  • This is great

  • Martin Havala, Velky Dur is the very best

  • Comment removed

  • no, Carlos is the second...

  • Carlos Alvarez is the best...

  • Mozart is the best!

  • mozart just can't be described with earthly words.

  • Indeed, this is true. In fact, his inspiration and works are also celestial, and they lead way out there in the Universe.

  • I referred to Mozart, not to Carlos Alvarez, a great artist however.

  • Mozart was a damn genius.

  • I LOVE CARLOS ALVAREZ

  • loporello and the servant gave me chills. and ... i never get chills

  • Loporello is the Servant.

  • haha yes i realized my typo after hitting enter :) i meant don giovanni

  • Mind you, I found the performances of all three to be fantastic. If you had called the guy Knickbacker I would have cared less.

  • watch?v=IptAkeiLzwU&feature=related my idea of a commandatore that blows me away. this one was eh

  • A, padron! A, padron! A, padron, siam tutti morti.

  • Great make up but D'Arcangelo has not the vocal weight to sing the Commendatore. Alvarez, instead, is super!

  • you right he can't, maybe that the reason D'Arcangelo is leporello.

  • Oooopss! ;) Sorry ;)

So who is singing the Commendatore?

  • Don't worry I don't even know who is he.

  • Franz-Josef Selig, I suppose, but it's only a guess.

  • I agree whole heartedly.

    However excellent he may be.

You don't see the confidence and conviction on his face.

  • Ugh, he's got such a wobbly vibrato.

  • awesome

  • planters peanut? ROFLMAOBBQSAUCE

  • Moll and Ramney version is better!

  • Those are the proper voices for this opera. Beautiful.:)

  • Why is Mr.Peannut so angry?

  • That's a cool mask!

  • que bellisima es la opera

  • beautiful!!

  • i need a massage

  • long live mozart and this apotheosic and extraordinary opera

  • Quien es el Comendador?

  • Franz-Josef Selig, va a cantar Fasolt en el MET esta temporada.

  • This is like in the 19th century... Peter Sellars sets it in New York but I don't understand this choice... if Mozart made it in the 18th century...

  • lo siento pero al don giovanni no se le escucha, falta volumen

  • Why is this performance so visually different than the one in Amadeus?

  • Becuase in Amadeus it shows how they did it 230 years ago.

  • Absolutely NOT!

In "Amadeus" they showed how an 80s Hollywood director would imagine "Don Giovanni" being produced in 1787, but it will definitely have no resemblance whatsoever of how the real thing was... I most certainly suppose there will NOT have been a Commendatore crashing through a wall or dancers as infernal spirits during the chorus in the end... That is historically completely inaccurate, albeit visually stunning, of course.

  • LoL @ monopoly piece reference, yes it does look like it. tempo is kinda lacking but with older singers, prostetics and such, its to be expected

  • i hate to say it but the one from the amadeus movie is the best

  • no the met 1990 special w/ samuel ramey, ferruccio furlanetto, and kurt moll

  • Vocally yes but visually the one in Amadeus takes the cake

  • O 100% agree with you. And visualy none stand a chance against amadeus, When it comes to the sound I think it is the best. Come on John Tomlinson as the commendatore

    Richard Stilwell as Don Giovanni

    Williard White as Leporello.

Richard did the best Giovanni death scream out there.

And no one even touches john tomlinsons commendatore vocals

  • I prefer Kurt Moll as the Commendatore. I would love to see the visuals in "Amadeus" with voiceover by Moll.

  • Amazing vocal skills...... the 3

  • Is this the one conducted my Muti?

  • This is slower than I am used to hearing it.

  • any idea when this was filmed?

  • j'aime beaucoup ce video les chanteurs sont très bons merci pour ce video

  • Could you post some more scenes from this production of Don Giovanni please? I would really like to see more of D'Arcangelo's interpretation of Leoporello. I think he is really good :)

    Thanks. Liz.

  • I'm going to be honest, I like the set design a lot, it's very brooding and atmospheric, but I honestly think the Mr. Peanut design (lols to DiVeronica) needs to go. I'm thinking a 19th century Cuirassier uniform to stay in character?

  • actually...i loev Mr Peanut!

  • Did the Cuirassiers have high headgear? I suppose the bass who performs the Commendatore here is visibly shorter than Mr Alvarez and something had to be done to prevent him looking ridiculous...

  • @TehMike i couldnt agree more. the hat is especially distracting lol

  • why does il commandatiore look like mr. peanut? I much prefer the plate armor in the other plays -

  • hahaha!!

  • agreed

  • :-)) Good one!

  • roflmao! just looked at a picture of Mr. Peanut!

  • too much vibrato for commendator but very good version

  • Exquisite Leporello.

  • yeah, d'arcengelo plays leporello alot

  • that was probably the creepiest stage entrance by an Il Commendatore that I have ever seen lol that was awesome how slowly he walked in....

  • Don`t you think it was because the singer hardly saw anything through his mask?

  • Hah, entirely possible, that mask looked rather bulky.

  • dios, qué montaje... la iluminación, el vesturio, el decorado...

    ¡todos fantástico!

  • BRAVÍSSSSSSIMO, CARLOS!!!!!!!!!! He aprendido muchísimo estos días cmpartiendo escenario cntigo. Salute! e VIVA!!! Un Amigo.

  • An excellent version, I like so much the setting in the XIX century...

Mozart is always wonderful, but I think Da ponte too,the writer of the lirics, is brilliant

  • I love love love Carlos Alvarez, a man as handsome as his voice is beautiful.

  • Depuis que je l'ai vu et je l'ai ecoute, senor Alvarez est un des plus aime. Gracias !

Ildebrando D'Arcangelo-aussi un ''maestro di maestri''

  • where is this performed? and when? does anyone know that? There is another scene (ah taci injusto core + deh vieni alla finestra) available on youtube with Alvarez and d'Arcangelo, but I'm not shure wether it's the same performance...

  • Oh my I've never heard this arranged like this, and how this one ends.. making it slower! Wrong costumes, though but... amazing!

  • This is realy beautiful! It's my favorite opera... I love Mozart:)

  • mmmm well the singig is excellent... but those clothes are fro 19th century so... is there any other version exactly as Mozart intended?

  • I guess Zeffirelli/Levine Met opera production, or Furtwangler/Siepi from Wien. Both on dvd.

  • And do they look as good as the commendatore's entrance in the Amadeus movie?

  • Zeffirelli's met is impressive...the other entrance that is good is the peter sellars production, wich is odd, but very popular among fans and specialists...

  • don giovanni is amazing.

  • I love love love this version...Could you please post Donna Anna's Arias (Or sai chi l'onore and Non mi dir) please!!!

  • sorry, this is the only clip i have

  • ok thanks

  • mmmm well the singig is excellent... but those clothes are from 19th century so... is there any other version exactly as Mozart intended?

  • Exactly as Mozart intended? Probably not. We don't have the set designs from the original 1780s productions anymore. The only Mozart opera to which the original set designs survive is Die Zauberflote (and I'm not sure if all of the sets exist)

  • Lovely!

  • This is from probably the best overall production available on dvd...there's many to choose from, but all the singers here, the acting, the staging, and everything else is first rate...

  • Probably my favorite opera so far.
